Parkour / Free Running

Postby TrigunX89 » Thu Mar 30, 2006 3:33 am

Is anyone familiar with Parkour? (aka Free Running) Some call it an extreme sport; others call it discipline. It has to do with the mindset that you can overcome all obsticles in life. Overcoming obsticles means running around, jumping from heights, gaps, walls, and anything else that stands in your way. You're supposed to do this naturally, without ever stopping to think about what comes next. At least, that's what I've gathered from online resources...

Here's my ordeal: My friends are all into this right now, and they want me to join them on the weekend. I, on the other hand, don't know if I'm even physically capable. It looks cool, but there's absolutely no way I could keep up with them. While they're at school running miles in P.E. every day, I'm at home snoozing. I'm one of those nerdy guys who seem allergic to physical activities, and rarely sees the light of day. So everytime you see me trying to play a sport or something, it looks like a scene out of a sitcom. *remembers an episode of Bernie Mac* I'm afraid I'll just embarass myself, or hurt myself.

So... Now that I've gotten this far in writing, I don't really know what I'm asking for in response... It just feels good to get this off my chest. If anyone has some sort of advice for me, I guess that would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time, to anyone who reads this.

I've heard of this before on the Reuters News webpage. Apparantely its really physicall demanding at higher levels but it can be fun to have at go at really really basic moves, I know, I've tried.

And don't worry about being physically fit. I can't run 200 yards before having to stop and I've had fun with Parkour. Only jumping off park benches and round a bin using the wall as a push off and things like that.

Persoanlly I'd advise that you go and have a go yet tell your friends your only along for a look-see. You never know...

Try to wear some protective padding, and tell them you won't do any climbing or free-falling components... I hope you have fun. :)

Thanks, guys. Perhaps I'll go check it out then. I guess my city is sort of small, but seems pretty average. I think my friends go over to the college to do this... What kinds of places do you go for Parkour?

Healing hands of God have mercy on our unclean souls
once again. Jesus Christ, Light of the World, burning
bright within our hearts forever. Freedom means love
without condition, without beginning or an end. Here's
my heart, let it be forever Yours, only You can make
every new day seem so new.

I've done a minor amount of reading on this and I find it interesting. While I would never do it as a leisure activity, I might explore the discipline for the sake of ordinary movement. Sure, I won't be chimney jumping to get to the second floor, but there are still effective and ineffective methods of moving.

Love is that feeling you get when a girl looks at you and it feels like your driving a car at high speeds and experience a sudden drop. You know what i mean? That sudden sinking feeling you get in your stomach? Yeah, that's love. Leave's you speechless everytime.
