I know many people are interested in working out, so I come seeking advice. It seems that I posted something like this before, but I'm not sure, so...

Anyway, the teenage body, while still growing, requires a different way of working out than the adult body, otherwise it might be harmed. Therefore, I'm not sure if the way I work out is that good. Anyone have any tips as to how a teenager is supposed to work out? I've been at it about 3 months now, but this recent workout routine maybe 1 month...

30 Pushups, situps, crunches, and one other thing where I twist my abdominal area around...dunno what it's called.
5 minute break
25 of everything
5 minute break
20 of all...
and so on

I tend to play racketball about three times a week. But I've been at it for a long time. I don't really know any good starting exercise routines.

I'm planning on signing up for a gym... I'm skinny enough as it is I just want turn some flab into muscles^^ I get too lazy and always forget (or too busy to) do it myself at home :/

I religiously work out three times a week at the YMCA, sometimes two if stuff happens that gets in the way. I've been sticking to that for a good year and a half and I can deffinetly tell the difference since then. That includes weight lifting, cardio, stretching all that good stuff. You just have to force yourself for awhile to do it then it will become natural and you won't be able to not do it.

I do some sit ups and work the exercise bike for at least 3 miles a day.When the weather is good I walk a bit plus I will be doing a lot of gardening and lawn work once the weather is warmer.
Btw:A lot of it has to do also with the type of metabolism you have.I'm 47 now but still look younger except for the ol' stomach.Got a bit of a belly,but not too much.
However I can't get over 175 pounds or else..

I try to excercise during the weekdays. I find myself alternating between doing various curls with my only weight and doing pushups and kickbacks with the same weight. I need to be doing cardio though... or get into a real weight room.

Kickboxing on Tuesdays. I am on my feet all the time where I work...so that helps too. Mix that with my soon to begin 6 mile jog a few times a week...and all I need is a good weight routine like I used to have. I strongly reccomend taking a martial art though. Get into kickboxing, akido, jiu jitsu, somthing like that.

Hi,

As far as suggestions on working out, it would in part depend on what exactly you want to accomplish with your workout routine. Are you trying to just stay in shape and healthy, wanting to lose weight and burn fat, build a little muscle or a bit of them all?

I am by no means an expert, but overall I would suggest for a workout a mix of cardio and strength training. Specific exercises would depend in part on what you like to do, with the cardio do activities you like (jogging, swimming, sports, martial arts etc..). That is important otherwise you will burn yourself out or get bored doing things you don't like. I would take it slow on whatever you do and build up. If you decide on doing strength training start with only 1 or 2 sets with just a few reps and light weight and if you use free weights always have a spotter no matter how light the weight may seem. Also, make sure you stretch, warm up before working out and stretch and cool down after whether it be strength training or cardio.

As a side note, if you are trying to build a six pack or overall all “sculptedâ€

For teenagers, I think your body is still growing, so don't do too many weights. I think it's better to concentrate more on being fit in the overall sense. The muscles can and will come later.

I would say stick with excercises that use your bodyweight (pushups crunches etc.) and maybe focus on some cardio, such as running or biking. Cardio has large benefits overall, especially in the long run.

i work out! i'm typing now, aren't i? :lol:

but actually, the only times i work out are when i'm boerd and hanging with friends... i think i ran a few miles on a treadmill a week ago, when iwas watching friends play smash brothers.

Ok depending on how old you are depends on how you should work out. When the body has matured is when you can start with weights, but otherwise, being active is good. There's probably more too it, but I have been active for my whole life and haven;t had any problems. All depends on the person.
What you are doing sounds a bit repetitive. You should prbably only do one or two sets of the 30 with only 30 sec break in between the push ups, then crunches, ect...
You need to do cardio as well. What your doing is building muscle, but you need cardio as well. At leaast 30-45 min of that a day. Remember always to have a rest day for your muscles and stuff to recover. 1 day a week.
Also, excersise with a well balanced diet is the key.

I've tried off-and-on to start working out, but this time I'm really going to stick with it.

I'm going to be working out on the Bowflex twice a week, doing push-ups and sit-ups every day, and some cardio (either DDR, running, or swimming) every day as well.

i do a weekly yoga workout.... it does a lot more then you'd think! i did it yesterday and im really sore today from working out my muscles!

I get on a treadmill every night,and keep going until 1)I have burned 100 calroies or 2) once I've been on for 20 minutes.And I'm waiting for a membership to the YMCA so I can go to their gym.

But seriously, when you are good at the game (or even bad at it!) and play at like an arcade. You tend to draw attention. And passerbys tend to go "Oh my gosh! How does he DO that?" and people admire you XD and the females dig you (Not really)

Ok so I do DDR for quite a bit (haven't for a while though cause I've been busy) and it is totally a great workout for your thighs and calves that BURN afterwords if you do certain songs :/ Sakura and the Paranoia Survivors KILLS me!
I do it at home and yeah that way it's sort of nice the the females DON'T dig me :/ My friends do admire me though (although my one friend's outdoing me cause he's been practicing more than me... grr...)

Well, you can all see how old I am. I have started with Butterflies, Curls, and then the rest. What are the differences in the strength and cardio workouts? I know next to nothing about all this. I bought two two-pound weights for curls and butterflies today. The reason I am doing it? Well, at first it was simply to become stronger, faster, whatever it took to become the best at martial arts or whatever I did physically. Now, that is still the main reason, but I must admit, it is nice having a semi-sculpted body...now if only I could finish it.

I jogged about 1/4 of a mile today and nearly threw up when I stopped.



Of course, I ate lunch as soon as I stopped and had just downed a double cup of cold coffee in one gulp. That's enough excercise for this season. I'll do some more when it's really spring.

I have one of those "mini-gym" sets in the garage (the ones where everything is connected and you can adjust the weights). Mostly I use it for muscle training and a little abdominals. Not that I am trying to stand out or anything, but exercising really does calm your nerves after enduring the stress.

I pretty much work out just to fall asleep in the evening. :lol:

I went to the beach and ran for half an hour (and walking a seemingly long distance to/from the car, too). I have a problem though--whenever I do any kind of exercise, I get hungrier. I think fate has conspired to keep me fat.

Your work out sounds pretty good. The only thing I an suggest is to make sure you rotate your exercises rather then just doing push ups and sit ups. Make sure you work your biceps, triceps and some of the different secondary muscles such as deltoids, shoulders, lats or whatever. Secondary muscles are important and can really help your body take shape faster and look better (portortionally). Though, I think that the resting time of 5mins is a bit long... usually 45sec to a minute is okay- that way you keep your heatrate up.

Like others have said, depending on what you're trying to achieve will determine what exercises suite you better. Though being 16yrs, I think it should be okay to weight train if you wanted too. It didn't stunt my height or anything during that age.

Anyways for what I do:

What I usually do is a mix of both of cardio and strength training. That way I keep my heartrate up.
-First I either run for a bit or jump rope.
-stretch for about 5-7mins. Stretching is very important

- Hit the weights:
--Depending on the day I switch it up: Sometimes I do regular bench press, decline press, incline or basic push-ups ( 3 sets of 50 or so). THat'll way I can work out different parts of the chest.
--For Biceps: either reg. curls, or use this one machine that you lay on your stomach and pull the weight towards you; it work both biceps and back.
--Shoulders shurgs, lifts and/or rotations
--reverse situps to work the lower back
-- Lat pulls
--for abs it really depends: sometimes I used the rubber ball, the reverse(upside down) sit up holder or whatever it's called. And I also work out the obliques.
triceps: Dips

Legs: little of this, little of that... Squats, calf raises etc..

(depending on how I feel, I sometimes try different exercises instead or skip a few)


I usually goto the gym around 3 times a week and I do about 3-4sets of 10. Though at times I'll change up the reps and weight; like the upside down prymaid workouts. It's usually about an hour or so workout.

What are the differences in the strength and cardio workouts?

The difference between the two is that strenght workouts increase more of your overall strenght while cardo works on your heart-rate and endurance/repititions. It probably good if you do both. Like one day work on strenght exercises (higer weights less reps) and aside from running, cardio work is less weight more reps. It's always good to have a mix of the two. Cardio/repetition workouts tend to shape/tone your muscles more, while strenght exercises make the muscles more bulkier w/ less definition. That's why I alternate between the two.

Ah...I want no bulk. For everything I've heard, bulk slows your movement down, and in sword battles, or any martial arts for that matter, I need speed. However, I need to build strength, as well. I probably need to get some training videos to make sure I do it right. I also need an anatomy chart...I have no idea what some of these muscle groups are. Anyway, thanks. I was thinking about doing 5 extra reps of 25 curls on my left arm to compensate for its weakness compared to my right arm...I'm right handed, so the entire right side of my body is more powerful.
