Daydreaming...

Postby Allegro » Thu Mar 23, 2006 2:21 pm

day·dream (From the Encarta World English Dictionary)

noun (plural day·dreams)Definitions: 1. Dream experienced while awake: a series of often distracting and usually pleasant thoughts and images that pass through the mind while awake

2. Unrealizable hope or fantasy: a pleasant wish or hope that is unlikely to be fulfilled

---------------------------------------------

Do you guys have a tendency to daydream a lot throughout the day? I find that in most cases, if I am an idle state or have nothing better to do, I let my mind shift into its own little world and go into autopilot. There are a lot of things I think about that sort of relates to the second definition (though in a semi-serious manner). When I listen to music, for example, I always picture a little music video going on in my head.

I find that if I let myself daydream at appropriate times, it helps let loose a lot of the stress I normally encounter during the day.

yep, I tend to do that too. Daydreaming's my version of roleplaying in my own mind. If that makes any sense?

I used to be bored enough that I would daydream and just make up stories that I'd eventually write. Now my form of daydreaming is just being bored (mostly in class) and just getting lost in my own thoughts (like things I wanna do that day or things I wanna talk to people about)... luckily I have the ability to get out of it when prof gives us a new key word to write down :/

Makes perfect sense to me - Taking things you see in reality and putting them into abstractions. Unless you're referring to video game roleplaying, that'd be a neat way to see things from that perspective.

That's exactly how college goes for me. I guess it's a handy skill to have to shift between daydreaming and reality. Don't want to sink in too much into thoughts.

I am very rarely in reality to say the truth. Quite often I am always daydreaming to a certain extent, even when I am paying attention to certain parts of reality. For instance, drawing equations in imaginary chalk on the walls or making massive vector plots over the grass outside the physics building. I love to apply my physics equations to these complex situations even if I don't solve for them directly. Just thinking about their inner workings makes me happy.

I spend entirely too much time daydreaming, quite honestly. Especiallyif I'm listening to music, but it's only because I'm in an idle state much of the time.

But it's highly soothing for me as well : )

I spend all my time day dreaming. I dont think that I can really stop. Its during my daydreams that I get ideas for stories, ideas on how to write college papers, inspiration for just things in general.

I think that day dreams are what keep me going sometimes. To say that I day dream too much would be an understatement. It gets really bother sometimes, especially when I'm on a windows computer. Cause sometimes I'll start daydreaming in the midst of typing a message (Ive already done it once or twice during this post) and end up holding down the shift key, which is a short cut for something or another. XD

Im always daydreaming, always thinking. Its funny. And bothersome. ^.^;;

I always figured that I was the only person who did that! Wow. I guess I'm slightly less of a freak than I previously thought. ^_^ I completely space out when imagining these "music videos", and basically become oblivious to everything else.

Daydreaming is useful to me, as well. I do it a lot when trying to think of new plots/events in my creative writing projects, but I find myself daydreaming right before I fall asleep every night, too. It's quite relaxing, and can provide much-needed release from everyday life.

The simplest way that I can understand therapy is that we're born a certain way, we're taught to be something different, and we spend our whole lives trying to unravel it and ultimately align ourselves with who we really are. Life, experiences, traumas -- whatever -- they all add up to make you some altered version of what you are. So there's this battle that goes on between what you are and what you become, and it's been very important for me to unravel what I was taught to be or what I became. and to draw a direct parallel to music -- the closer I get back to being who I really am, the stronger the music gets..." --Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins frontman)

i am really bad at daydreaming. usually, i end up with a great story idea, and immediately write it out in word. unfortunately, none of them ever really get finished...
