Windows XP boots on a MacBook!

Well, with the move to x86, I'm sure many of us could see this coming, but it's still a good read.

Lol. I'll let this sit here for a little while, but pretty soon this will qualify as Goof Off. ;)

And now for something actually serious on the topic -- looks like Windows will not be functional on Intel Macs, at least not yet.

http://news.com.com//No+Vista+on+Macs+horizon/2100-1006_3-6048250.html

According to Apple Senior Software Architect Cameron Esfahani, Vista will only support EFI in its 64-bit flavour, and all current Intel Macs are 32-bit. (The Intel Power Mac "MacPro??" probably will be 64-bit, though.) Also, Apple's implementation of EFI is not market-standard and has a lot of PC legacy bindings removed because OS X doesn't need them. This might further impact Vista. Esfahani reiterated that Apple won't actively stop people putting Windows on Intel Macs, but it won't support it either.

And now Microsoft is saying the initial release of Vista won't support EFI after all.

What type of Mac? Virtual PC comes up on my dual G4 in about a minute (either 98SE or 2000 -- I get nauseous using XP, but I can tolerate 2000), so you must have a slower one. Microsoft did improve the speed even with 7.0.2, but Connectix 6.0.1 isn't glacial.

I think I can see why. That was tarrible!

Ah, yes, Guest PC is amazingly slow. It does work, but it's pretty sluggish.

VPC is tolerable, but other than DOSBOX, the other PC emulators really drove me crazy.

Windows XP now CAN boot on an Intel-based Mac, and officially too. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4880022.stm

i think it was a very poor move for Mac to switch to the Intel chipset. Plus who wants to put an unstable OS like Windows on Mac... Doing this will make it more likely to have viruses for mac. The chipset is what has helped mac with the virus free zone. I really don't like Windows becuz of its instability. Go to Linux or Mac ;)

i think that the unix based operating system helps it to be virus free more than the chipset...there still aren't any major mac virus threats...

Has anyone tried comparing PC/Mac speeds now that the architecture is similar or is this still too far apart for any meaningful comparisons?

No, It's the OS that made it a virus free zone. That and the amount of people using it. Because if I had an AMD Windows system, that won't make it less prone to viruses.

i say the chipset becuz its a very unique chipset. U can't just put a MAC OS on a PC based system. people are going 2 hack wat is easier for them and more beneficial to them. and in writin an OS u need 2 write a language the chip can process. does that make sense?

well i mean before they changed the chipset. back when they were using the PowerPC chipset. but even still i can't buy a dell and place a Mac OS on it without flashing my bios or sumthing. I consider this Intel switch a kind of MAC chipset even tho its running a Intel chip. when Leopard comes out it'll truly be a PC based chipset. Their talking about placing MAC OS's on PC based computers such as Dell or whatever. Not just apple computers

I think you're confusing the terms.

The MacOS software is compatible with the Intel architecture.

A chipset is what is permanently fixed on the motherboard, and it determines the possible features of that board (eg. 5.1 sound, firewire, gigabit LAN, etc).
Chipsets are made by Intel, AMD, nVidia, VIA, SIS (well, they used to..), and others.

So for example, my chipset is a nVidia nForce 3.
My processor is an AMD Athlon64.
Everywhere like such as, and MOES.
