Being open about being a fan?

Is anybody here open about the fact that you're into anime? Whether it's with your friends, families, or co-workers, does the subject of anime ever cross between you and the people you know?

I personally try to keep my fandom under the radar; not because I am ashamed, but because it's simply something that I prefer to enjoy by myself. Though while I do read manga in public, that's as far as I usually go to show myself as a fan.

Of course, I suppose that you would be recognized by other fans much easily in public if you wear anime T-Shirts. Which means that if one is open, then you'll likely to meet other fans.

Well, many here don't know what it is so I'm not to open about it lest I get into a long conversation about it. But overall I'm more or less open about it - I don't try to hide it from my parents or anything.

I do not consider myself qualified enough to be a fan, as the number of titles I have seen amounts to around 10.

But when asked, I do say I've seen anime and probably intend to continue to do so.

I'm open about it in the sense that I'll talk about it with people, and I occassionally wear an anime-related shirt, but I don't go around trumpeting about it all the time, either.

It's no big deal to me what people think of me for watching anime, but I think it's kinda immature to go around raving to everyone you meet about it, too.

I'm kind of mixed. Usually I don't tell a complete stranger that I like anime, since it is viewed as a kind of weird thing to like. Once someone knows me better, or knows I like anime, I'll get into conversations with them about almost any anime-related topic. Also, I will go up and talk to people if it is obvious that they like anime. But for the most part I don't go around advertising it myself.

Anyway, I'm sort of mixed. My family knows about my love for anime, as do a few of my closest friends (simply because I know they'll respect my interests, as I do theirs). Otherwise, I don't really go on about it. A couple of classmates are coming over to my apartment this weekend to help me code for a research project, and I'm not going to hide my anime (or Disney) stuff, but I'm not going to celebrate it and direct their attention to it, either.

That, plus it makes me look like a hypocrite that my all-time favorite is Sailor Moon.

I know that feelin. I'm not as big an anime fan as i am to manga but still I don't usually tell people that I'm into that stuff because a lot of the time people get the wrong idea. It took a very long time to get my mom to understand and i don't like explaining it to everyone i talk to so they just know i like drawing in the style and i get no other questions

People know I am, especially since I'll try and get my friends to watch teh occasional show, like Azumanga or Fruits Basket.

Although... when I first entered my Japanese class and didn't know anyone and being a shy person, I had an idea... Went to the candy store across the street that also solf manga and picked up a CCS manga. I opened it up and started reading it in class that day, thinking "hm, maybe there's another anime fan here". The person sitting in front of me turned around saying "You like Card Captor Sakura too?!" Funny thing was, she was in the middle of drawing Hikaru from Rayearth! So then me and her became friends, and we also met 2 other people in the class (one other an anime fan) so yeah, it was interesting^^

Also, since I'm not nearly AS anime crazed as I once was, I tend to keep it to myself unless I know others that like it. Still my friends/parents know (not like I try and really hide it though).

I always go around proclaiming my love for anime - as well as my love for live-action. I mean really, live action is great! The colors are so realistic, and the people look so real.

Okay, seriously, it's just a form of entertainment. I'll watch some on a weekend maybe, but it's not something worth getting worked up over.

Almost all my closest friends like anime at least to some degree, and my family is open-minded enough to know that not all anime is bad, so I tend to be pretty open about it. Besides, being open about it with my family means I can get anime DVDs from them for Christmas and birthdays.

It would rather depend on the anime in discussion.I mean I would be more open about liking something like Crest of the Stars since everyone knows I'm a Sci Fi
fan,but would be less open about liking something like Sailor Moon.

I try to avoid the statement "I like anime" because it really makes about as much sense as saying "I like movies" or "I like writing." Yes, I realize some people say those things. Still, I am a fan of some specific anime and some manga, and I like the form of storytelling (though I have yet to see a form I don't like), but it seems odd to consider myself a fan of an entire medium.

That having been said, if I'm approached on the subject I answer directly and simply.

My family doesn't really care. And I'm kind of glad, as my younger borther is always like, "So, how's that on new series you bought like?" And he says it in kind of a taunting, joking manner, so most of the time he doesn't care what I say.

My older brother is different. For example, I took some anime DVDs into Gamestop and my younger brother asked what I had in the bag, and my older bro said when I showed what I had, "Oh, some of those stupid Japanese movies."
But he doesn't bother me at all, as I don't care about his opinion on anime anymore than the guy I pass while walking thru the mall.

Most people are suprised I'm into anime though. Well, when I tell them or they see my picture in MSN Messanger they know already.
But no one really cares, I think. All the people I know, respect me for what I do and don't like.

Yah pretty much the same as what most people are saying goes for me as well.

I have many friends that are into it as well, and I have friends that only like one or two series, and then there are the ones who just aren't into it. I'm not afraid to let people know that its my hobby, but I also don't spaz out about it to people who don't like it.

Though I have run into a few people who describe it as 'those demon books' or 'those gay books' and I just smile at them and say; "Well I'm sorry that your mistaken. ::goes back to reading::"

I am very open about it....even when people roll their eyes at me. In fact, in the ministry I am a part of (the Navigators) there are a handful of people who are also into anime. Thus, we plan anime days. I plan to actually announce one at our Navigators meeting the next time we plan an anime day.....

No I am not open about my anime fandome. For a will I was sortof ashamed of it. Lets face it for children of the most high God who are to "be holy as I am Holy" there realy very little in the way of redeming qualites to the only anime seres that I had access to at the time Inu-Yasha.

I guess you could say I'm pretty open about it. Back when I used to bring manga to school without a bookbag large enough to carry it in along with my books, I would keep them out on my desk and such. Also, when I used to bring a 3-ring notebook to school, I would sometimes have anime pictures slid into the front cover. Still, I'm not sure of who knows I'm a fan or not. I don't go out of my way to show that I'm a fan, but I don't try to keep it hidden, either. I just sort of...go with it, haha! My family all knows that I'm a fan, even though my parents think it's weird or dumb from time to time. XD My brother is a little less against it, since he used to love it anyways. So, I'm just sort of middle-ground, I guess.

Some of the people I work with at my regular job and at the volunteer fire company I belong to know I am involved in anime because they have seen pictures I have taken or gotten off the fansview.com site plus I keep a large 12 month calendar of dates I plan to take off for anime cons and fire dept events at work.
I will explain to people that are just meeting me my involvement in anime because I also work on staff at one of the shows with safety operations.

Yeah exactly. If a person isn't too thrilled with the subject, I'd spare them from saying "So today on Inuyasha, him and Sesshoumaru faught AGAIN!! Cept this time Inuyasha got new powers....." etc. etc. :/

What gets me is no one cares if I'm in my room watching Sponge Bob, but they find it weird for me to watch anime, I guess. lol I find that a little bit funny.

If I find someone who is interested in anime I'll talk to them, but it doesn't go much farther than that. My family knows that I like anime. heck! my dad even enjoys anime and will even hold a conversation about it once in a while.
