I'm surprised A LOT of websites had this posted as like "breaking news" and funny how specific they were with the fact that it was "Wrigley's Extra Polar Ice gum". :/

Unless the painting is like the actual copy from back in DiVinchi's time, I honestly don't see WHY abstract newer art like that is so expensive^^ I'm an artistic person myself (into realism though) but still!

*sigh* And yet not one of all these websites had a picture posted on what this painting looks like :/ ...that I tried to look through at least.

CHILD ABUSE!!!

Kidding, of course.

The article wrote:"Even though we give very strict guidelines on proper behavior and we hold students to high standards, he is only 12 and I don't think he understood the ramifications of what he did before it happened, but he certainly understands the severity of it now," said Kildee.

That's absolute bull. No twelve-year-old is stupid enough not to know better.

Of course, the painting was an abstract, so it probably deserved whatever it got. >_>

Wow. The kid deserves punishment for that. Abstract art or not, respect is respect. I am betting his parents are so embarrassed right now though...

Agreed. I'm tired of people assuming that everyone is good and just "accidentally" does stuff because they don't know it's against the rules or something. Absolute garbage. That kid knew full well what he was doing and saying crap like that is gonna make him think he can get away with it. No wonder kids these days are so messed up.

At the very least, make him pay for the repairs... If the repairs were 4000, make him work it off in small amounts until he was 16, then make him work 10 hours a week at minimum wage, until he payed it off... I mean, he may have just been "contributing" to the art since it was abstract, but he should really do that to his own crappy painting instead of that crappy painting.

Yup, some of my nephews are close to 12 and they would definately know better (and would get quite the punishment from their parents if they were dumb enough to do such a thing). But heck, why not just leave the gum there? It might add some outstanding textural element to the painting and make it worth more someday! :thumbsdow

My question is, why did the teacher not notice what the kid was doing? Although I guess if it was a large group I can understand....After seeing what some of the kids that come through with there parents where I work...they really can be destructive and crude. We have had kids grab bagels out of the case, bite them...then toss them back in. Guess they wanted to sample...lol.

Considering he was suspended and punished by his parents, I believe that what the statement that "he is only 12 and I don't think he understood the ramifications of what he did before it happened" is not a complete absolution from blame. If it was, they would not have punished him. Clearly what is being said is that at 12 years old a kid might not think through what he was doing or understand that the damage to the painting would be as extensive as it was. Seriously, at 12 a person can do some immature and possibly stupid things. That's why 12 year olds are not considered adults under the law and do not drive cars.

So while, yes, this was a pretty stupid and careless act on the part of the kid, I think the person quoted here is right to cut him a bit of slack. He's a 12 year old kid. I feel bad for him, actually. He must feel horrible. Yes, it was wrong. And he's been punished, which is proper. But imagine if you were in his place. And don't give me any of that "I wouldn't do what he did". Just imagine that you had done something so impulsive and stupid. Then imagine that it was on the national news. How would you feel?

Wow. Kids these days. *shakes head* I know I sure did some dumb stuff in my day, and some of it made sense at the time (I was so naive in 6th grade that I used a bad word in a creative writing essay, having no idea that it was a bad word).

I would be curious to know the kid's line of thought that ended in sticking gum on the painting. Of course he should have known better, any reasonable kid over the age of 8 or so should, but knowing does not equal doing. Wonder if he was dared to do it.

And for the curious, the painting:

It's probably worth that much for at least a couple reasons:

1. There's a famous name behind the art.
2. Enough people with famous names said "Wow, this is brilliant!"

Of course, it would be interesting to know just what it's an abstraction of. The composition of the painting is interesting, but not interesting enough to make it worth so much money.

Actually, that's not that bad for abstract art. I mean, at least it looks vaguely like a bay. And while I am not nearly a fan of abstact art, I think that painting is more complex than you guys give it credit for. And of course, no matter what the painting is like, it was on exhibit at a museum. You don't touch paintings at a museum. That's just a given.

EDIT: Syreth, apparently it's called The Bay. So that's what it's supposed to be about. Hey, at least it looks like a body of water.

I guess that's what's interesting about abstract art. I wasn't even thinking of a body of water at first impression. I was thinking of a landscape during the day vs. night. Or maybe a very large flower or something.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you, meboeck. I'm sure it's more complex than it seems at first glance. It's probably easier for the artist to appreciate it since they know exactly what they made an abstraction of.

I can't do abstract. My first year of college, we had to do lots and tons of abstract compositions from points, lines, and planes, as they apply to architecture. My obsessive compulsive realism could barely handle it. But now, I have a better appreciation for those who do abstractism and do it well.

But this painting, notsomuch. But, hey, *shrug* whatever toots your horn. I'm sure there are people out there who think this is a marvelous work of art worth every penny of the $1.5 mil. I'm just not one of them.

It reminded me more of a Blue Rose so maybe Blue Rose would have been a better title. Then again it depends on how you look at it.
As far as the boy was concerned..12 years old is old enough to at least know better than sticking gum on works of art.It doesn't matter wheter or not you can tell what it is,you still shouldn't be sticking gum on it.

I agree 100%. =/ Nice painting or not, it's someone's creation and someone's art, and I was really horrified to hear that regardless of what it was, some kid stuck a piece of gum on it. >_< Dude, imagine how the artist must have felt - er, if the dude is still alive. I know I'd be...less than happy.
