@ Artists: Drawing clothes on characters?

So I'm sitting here, sketching a person on Photoshop when I realize I don't know what to draw for his clothes. Passable clothes to me are a shirt and a pair of jeans. But wanting to expand my sense of clothes, I ask, what do you artists do for inspiration on drawing clothes on characters?

There's a Graphic-sha (How To Draw Manga) book that contains all sorts of designs for all sorts of clothing, along with designs for pockets, cufs, sleeves, collars, etc. I find it quite useful for ideas. Pick it up - it'll set you back 20-25 dollars, but it is PACKED.

That said, anime, video games, and movies (especially fantasy and sci-fi) provide great inspiration.

usually just browsing through anime pictures or pictures on dolly websites. x3 they have some of the niftiest clothes - I admit my outfit design skills leave a bit to be desired, so I try and absorb lots of inspiration.

I got a clothing catalog, picked out a couple of outfits, and tried to draw them. You could use any picture of a real person, but catalogs and fashion mags are more likely to show full body.

As others said, clothes catalogs are a good way of expanding your artistic wardrobe. Also, think about the character, or at least the person's pose--what does their posture say about them? Are they upstanding members of society, good kids, rebels, or wild ones? Think about the kind of clothes that person would wear, even if they don't exist. Then draw them on.

If you're drawing a guy, I submit that a bikini might be rather too silly. Try an Ilpalazzo outfit.

Just try random stuff, and go back if you don't like it. If it turns out to look horrible, all you lose is time, and you gain knowledge of what doesn't work.

I'm a little late with this response but I typically go back to my collection of saved anime/manga/Hollywood digital images on my hard drive and run through them. I have so many images, I'll get an inspiration in no time.

You're an artist. That problem is easily remedied by picking up a different color of marker.
