5. "Ramna 1/2" (5,000,000-1) "Although I love the show, and it's Rumiko Takahashi, the show is kind of old now."

Blasphemy. Ranma kicks the crap out of Inu Yasha (no offense to IY fans, but Ranma was my first anime and IY will never compare IMO. And I'll never forgive Viz for putting those stupid 'From the creator of Inu Yasha' stickers on all of the Ranma mangas....).

I don't think Kare Kano would be as big a stretch as some, seeing as how, fundamentally, it's more similar to Evangelion than any other shoujo-esque series'.

"New" makes me think Blood + or DieBuster, though... seeing as DieBuster has a similar (albiet more serious) vibe as FLCL (and the animation/art is about the same), that one could work...

Gankutsuou could be a good fit, but that's not really "new", though I think it'd be a near perfect addition to the action line ups.

Or more Perfect Hair Forever, since that show is fantastic.

This is my picks on what maybe showed on AS or Toonami.

Trinity Blood. Funimation has the rights to this show, but it will not be coming out here in the states in Summer of this year.

Beck : This could be the subtitle that we have been waiting for.

Eureka 7 could go to Toonami and Bandai has the rights to it.

Now these are just guesses by me and I just want to see if I could be right on the picks.

Also, I think they will not show any anime that is pre 98 era. EVA is not doing well on AS right now.

I hope FMP gets it... Ir eally do. I woundt mind hearing Vic Mignogna's voice again..*siiiiigh* this VA is my absolute fave!!!

Plus I only own the second DVD and it would be aweomse to see the whole thing! (I own vol 1-3 of the mangas. VOL ONE IS HILARIOUS!)

AS should try Fruits Basket out....the female fan base would be all, "YAAAAAAY!"

Of course I wouldn't watch it on AS..I own all the dvds...>.> <.< ^^;

Wow, I feel like a dork for not thinking of that. Beck'd be absolutely perfect, and probably not dubbed... though I'm an avid supporter of (good) dubs, I can't see Beck getting a dub.

Remember, though, AS has to appeal to a wider audience. You can't expect them to put on a bunch of niche titles that'd only appeal to the hardcore crowd. Look what happened to Detective Conan.

I think that is the difference between AS and AU in a nutshell.AS has to appeal to the LCD while AU is more attuned to the Geeks in the audience.

As far as I know, yes. They are still dubbing it and if the keep dubbing it, we will in our 50's when all of the eps come out. That is if Detective Conan every ends. <_<

I stop watching it after I found out that it would take 5 to 10 years to see all of Detective Conan

Could be. I remember, Wingzero, you mentioned a rumor about a Blood series coming to AS in the future, and I saw something about that rumor on at least one other MB as well.

Impact Alberto wrote:Remember, though, AS has to appeal to a wider audience. You can't expect them to put on a bunch of niche titles that'd only appeal to the hardcore crowd. Look what happened to Detective Conan.

Personally, I would have thought Conan would be an ideal title to reach the masses. It hit AS about the time CSI was really hot (I see Conan as a show in that vein), and should have had appeal for a variety of audiences. From what I understand it did fairly well in the 12-17 demo, just not in the 18-34 demo that AS targets. Perhaps the main character being a little kid and some of the Jr. Detective League episodes were a turnoff to that audience. (Granted, the main character wasn't really a little kid, but it could appear that way to those unfamiliar with the show.) I kind of wish they'd have given it a shot on Toonami or the 10PM E/P hour, although they might have had to take certain eps out to run outside of AS.

Detective Conan's problem was that it was not really "adult" enough for Adult Swim, but it was too violent for Toonami.
So, it was something of a "lose-lose" situation...

Yeah, so the only place it can survive is on DVD. Thankfully, Funimation is wising up and is releasing more episodes per disc now. However, we have to wait till they release all of the televised episodes to disc before we get back to the new episodes. 'Twill be a VERY long wait, maybe a year or more. *sigh*

But it'll be worth it, hopefully. I can catch up on Kodocha now that I won't have regular Conan DVDs coming in.

Okay, sorry to get off-topic. Back to AS stuff!

Yeah, but there is a problem with that. They are old and if its not flashy, then they will not show it. I mean, EVA is not doing well on AS right now and its old.

I fear that after this, CN will not show anything that is pre 1998.

I believe AZN Television has the rights to Fushigi Yugi, so it's probably not going to happen anytime soon. Still I imagine the distributor would love to get on a bigger network if they had the chance and could get out of their other agreement.

Just curious, what's your source for Eva's ratings? I don't doubt that it's true; I'm just thinking there might be some stuff there that I'd find interesting as well. ;)

You would think they would have said something by now. I look for March for them tell use what we will get to see as anime in 2006. FMA has four eps left, EVA is on what ep 19 or so. So they have like 5 or so eps left. There is 14 eps or so left of GITS.

Now, I could be wrong about them showing Escaflowne. As a Escaflowne fan boy, I would love to see it on TV, so that others can see it. Now there is one thing fishy and makes you wonder a bit. The ad that CN ran for Escaflowne, the song that they are using is Shadow Of Doubt from Escaflowne TV OST 2 CD. Now, why are they using a piece of music that is not played in the movie?

I mean, every kept saying that EVA would never come to CN or air on TV and we were wrong.

I remember something on ToonZone about this. But then again, it was late when I was reading it and I maybe wrong. I just know that some people have said, they wish they would take EVA off CN.

I wonder if part of the deal with NGE is that it is ADV and ADV has the deal with
Anime Unleashed.
Then again I think AS is more concerned with advertising it's comedies than it's
anime right now.

Really? From what I've seen on Toonzone, it seemed to me that most of the AS fans there lean more toward supporting Eva and anime in general. Not to say there aren't the Eva/anime detractors on there, though, and of course MB posters don't represent the public as a whole]I wonder if part of the deal with NGE is that it is ADV and ADV has the deal with Anime Unleashed.[/QUOTE]
This is just speculation on my part, but I'm basing it on some things I've gathered, including something Kim Manning said in her GATV interview... I think when ADV was working on the launch of Anime Network, they were trying to be a little more stingy with the rights to their programs. Then after they realized it was going to be more of an uphill battle to get the AN 24/7 feed onto cable systems than they originally hoped, they decided it would be in their best interest to work with the bigger networks (CN, G4, etc.) to get their programming on where they could, even if it meant that Anime Network wouldn't have exclusivity on certain shows.

I don't really think ADV has a lot to do with the Eva's promotion on AS. There may be certain requirements on it in the contract, but not as major make-or-break points. ADV is probably just happy to be getting the licensing fees from both networks. And apparently they're wanting to work with the other networks even more, with them trying to push FUMOFFU to AS.

mitsuki lover wrote:Then again I think AS is more concerned with advertising it's comedies than it's anime right now.

I don't disagree a bit there. That's probably what it really comes down to, since (in theory) comedy is what brings in most of the ad dollars.

I've seen only the ad for FMA and the occasional ad that hypes Inuyasha,SAmurai Champloo and Neon Genesis Evangelion as a set.Fortunately I have already started the process of getting together my own anime DVD collection, which now includes the third Inuyasha movie,Swords of an Honorable Ruler and also Trigun:Angel Arms.As soon as I get my latest order from AnimeNation I will have a total of 20.
Although I am still a ways from my goal.

Remember the good old days of CN about 2003 or so. They had some good ads for the anime that they were showing.

Some of the best ads were.

The long Gundam Wing ad that aired a few months before they showed it. The 60 sec Endless Waltz ad.

Wolf's Rain ad about the book of the moon.

Tenchi 1 min and half ad that was aired a few months back before they aired it.

There was a nice Cowboy Bebop ad that I really like.

08th MS team ad that was very good.

Blue Sub Six ad that give it some hype, before they aired it.

Yeah, they aired it in Nov 2000.

It aired on Monday, Nov 6 at 6 pm. Catchy huh! Since the OVA was only four eps long, they showed Gundam Wing Endless Waltz on Friday, Nov 10th.

They did have an Eva standalone promo around the launch of the show, but I haven't seen it in some time. It may have partly to due with them deciding to run some of the last few episodes with a more adult content rating than what the promo acknowledged. But working in media production on my real job, I would think something like that would be relatively easy to fix.

I'm thinking I may have seen the Champloo promo with its new timeslot, but it was still the old promo, just updated to reflect the new timeslot. I don't think I've seen any standalone promos for Inu to reflect its new timeslot. It would be nice to see them start promoting FMA's Monday night run more, although that probably won't happen until the Saturday night premieres end.

I'd add to that list the whole promo campaign the first time they went with all-anime Saturday night, back in 2002, the one with the robot voice. That was from the early days of AS, back when comedy was promoted with the "All kids out of the pool" campaign (anyone else remember "Betty! Betty! Betty!"?) There were good promos and bumpers on both sides of the aisle in those days.

Another good promo was the all-anime Saturday night promo that ran probably around early 2005 -- the one that started with Knives snapping his fingers. That was a pretty groovy spot. It only ran for a relatively short time, though, because all-anime Saturday that time was gone within about 6 weeks after it started. :(

I see in the paper where Comcast has started to promote it's family tier option that will begin March 31.Toon Disney is listed but not Cartoon Network,so I wonder how the new option will cut into CN's audience level.

I really don't think these family tier packages are going to do much to affect ratings.

So far what I've seen of the family tier options are about a joke. Most of them don't include stuff like ESPN, TV Land, Animal Planet, GSN, and other channels that for the most part are considered fairly family-friendly. (Not that ESPN is especially a family-oriented network, but most sports programs are considered family-friendly. And try to find many men with cable that will take a package without it.) And like you said, I don't think I've seen any "family tiers" with Cartoon Network; I can kind of understand that, with Adult Swim going in a more "adult" direction lately, but still you'd think cable companies would try to use the CN name to market their packages since AS doesn't air until after 10PM.

I really expect these family tier packages, at least as they are now, to flop. Most of them do include Nickelodeon, Disney, Discovery, and the Weather Channel, but that's about it as far as the channels the public at large care about. Plus most of them require customers to get a digital box. Some concerned parents groups, such as the Parents' Television Council, are writing off these packages as "deliberately... designed to fail," partly because they don't give customers true cable choice. I know the PTC gets its share of criticism, but in this case I tend to agree with them.

Anyway that's my $.02...

With the end in sight for two of Adult Swim's biggest anime cash cows, (Fullmetal Alchemist and Neon Genesis Evangelion), I think you'll notice them (Adult Swim) investing a bit more into their own crappy cartoons like "Tom Goes to the Mayor" and "Moral Orel". As much as I hate to say it, those cartoons may be a bit more popular than their anime slots. We may have to consider the possibility that AS may NOT bring over any more anime and just rerun what they already have a licence on and their own cartoons. They may be hesitant to buy the license for another anime and not have it be as successful.

Adult Swim can play it one of two ways in my view:

  1. Replay anime that they already own licences and pound in more of their own cartoons
  2. Take a risk and get the licences for new anime, and pray it works
