Childhood Fears

Talk about anything in here.

Pascal wrote:I always had a fear of ghosts when I was little, irrational, well you be the judge cause I still am to a certain extent. When I was two or three, one of the earliest memories I have, was waking up one morning and my feat felt like they were burning. Consequently taking a logical step, I went into the bathroom, climbed onto the sink and put my feet under water (hey it seemed logical to me). Looking into the mirror in front of me was a giant single eyeball floating above the toilet (yet surprisingly no toilet fears), I turned around and there was nothing over the toilet, looked at the the mirror and their it was staring at me... terrified to death I made sure not to make any sudden movements and left the room in terror. Telling the event to my mother and sister the next day they tell me to this day that the wierdest part of the story was that my room smelt like smoke that day.

We had other wierd occurances in our house that defied all kinds of sense. A lightbulb was garunteed to burn out every night my father worked graveyards. But the most odd didn't happen until later when I was 8. playing with my action figures on the floor while my mother sat by and watched. I love to make sound effects... and still do. So I of course I was making shooting and explosion sounds. Also note that on this instance we were the only two in the house, my father was at work. Out of the clear blue the power in the whole house went off and on in sinc with one of my shooting sound effects. Looking back at my mother I thought it was funny so, just to test things, I did two of the same sound effects in rapid succession leaving a short break in between them. Upon doing so the electricity also went out in the exact same periods. It was incredibly scary but I wanted to prove the logic of science over mysticism to my mother, so I went to the only place I could go to prove that this was all just a coincidece. Upstairs, where all previous wierd things had taken place. Walking into my room I mocked the possibility of ghosts at the top of my voice... needless to say it wasn't a bright decision, no sooner had I finished my remarks than all the lights in the house went out and stayed out for a good few seconds! Leaving me running and screaming down the stairs in the dark.

So I ask the question, illogical fear or semi-logical fear? Today I can actually sleep upstairs (something I couldn't bring my self to do for about ten years) and I don't feel a drop of fear except at rare occassions at night one or two hours into sleeping when I feel the an overwhelming urge to sleep down stair and leave the room ASAP. But this could just be a lagging memory of fear from my childhood experiences. You be the judge.

Pascal

That would have been pretty scary.

Aliens. You wouldn't believe how many times I've stayed up during the night, fearing an alienspace ship was on the roof and was going to abduct me. I think it was after seeing the movie, "Fire in the Sky" that led me to believe that the aliens are trying to steal me, and so I usually left my light on just so I could see them before they got me...

As a kid, I once had a nightmare about gigantic balloons. After that, I had a perpetual fear of being carried away by giant balloons.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

LOL, For a short time I thought a cowboy would come out of the shower drain and pull me in, when I was younger.

S.K.E.L.E.T.O.N.S I was TERRIFIED of Skeletons until I was twelve. Skeletons in movies or shows that walked, or moved, or sat up and grabbed people, they terrified me. I especially disliked a skeleton that laughed. ((Are You Afraid of THe Dark: The curse of cuttlers Treasure.))

NOwadays I'm Scared of the BLOB. After I saw the modern movie, I couldn't sleep for two days, and the thirds day I had pills helping me.

I was mainly afraid of eternity and darkness. I didn't really believe in monsters but was afraid of the dark because it was dark and anything could be hiding in the dark (I didn't really have a good idea what I thought would be hiding, I just thought it was scary). As for eternity, I can't really explain why I was so concerned about it but it was a major fear for me, actually the main fear that had me bothering my parents at night because I was scared. I just couldn't understand eternity (still can't of course) and that frightened me like nothing else.

Oh, another one just came to mind. I used to be absolutely terrified of tornadoes. I've never even been through a tornado, but the thought of having to go through one used to petrify me. XD Seriously, every time we would have a thunderstorm, I would be absolutely certain that a tornado was going to come and suck me up. Tornadoes are super rare where I live, so I really had nothing to worry about at all. Still though, whenever we do get a tornado warning in my area, it always unnerves me. o_o

Oh, and I also used to be afraid of my public library. It was really old with this orange 70's style carpet everywhere, and it TONS of mold on the ceilings and what. It had 3 floors, but no one was ever on the third floor, and it was always dark. There was this balcony that would look over onto the second floor though, and I would always think that some sort of monster/skeleton/ghost thing was staring at me. XD But, we have a new library now, and it's much nicer and cleaner. :thumb:

I cried and hid behind my seat in the theater when that happened and refused to watch the movie for years afterward. I don't mind the ocean, at least wading up do my torso, I can't swim well enough to go out further. The beaches I've been to have all had lovely clear water, so I didn't have a problem.

Pascal, freaky-scary stories. Creeped me out enough to have to sit with my feet off the floor. If I'm wigged out, I can't have my feet on the floor or even dangling and my back can't be exposed.

I have a friend who is phobic of china dolls, voodoo dolls, and nutcrackers. Seriously, even when we were both 16+. In third grade when staying over at her house, we were being rebellious 8 year olds and watching tv at 10 at night. In the next room over, there were some china dolls. My friend started freaking herself out, freaking me out in the process.

Friend: 'Sara, the doll is standing up'
Me: 'It's on a stand, of course it's standing' *rolls eyes*
Friend: 'No. It's standing on its own in the middle of the room.'
Me: ... ... 'wah?'
Friend: 'Oh my gosh! It's walking this way!!'
Me: '!!?!!Wah?!!?'
Friend: 'It's coming faster!!' *edges toward bedroom*
Me: !!! *starts moving toward bedroom*
Friend: 'Now it's running!!! Run!'
Both: *run to bedroom, slam door shut*

Ah the imaginations of the young.

I do remember being slightly freaked out by clowns after seeing a few minutes of Poltergeist, when the clown is tormenting the boy at night, when I was little.

China dolls and ventriloquist dolls, especially the second one. I haven't ever seen the Chucky movies (and this was even before Goosebumps books) that I thought they looked demonic and they scared the stuffing out of me. Still do to an extent.

It's funny, cuz I was never scared of bugs when I was younger...now..I hate em lol.

Oh yeah, and I was also afraid to slide down this one really high slide(or so it seemed at the time lol) at a park near my house.

I almost forgot, Thunderstorms! I was scared to death of them (sometimes stil am *coughs* ) lol.

*shivers* Chucky...why did they ever make those shows? All they did for me was make me afraid of those dolls! I only like ventriloquist dolls if they look more cuddly or like stuffed animals, though I'm not really sure if you'd count those as that type of doll *huggles Lamb Chop*

I actually have a small phobia of moving things...thats right...typically it's chains. like on swings and chandeliers and such. we lived in CA and I experienced a major earthquake and lots of our lamps and stuff started swining on thier own..I don't think my subconcious has ever gotten over that...=-=

ok..but an irrational fear that I had was of my parents fireplace. the false wood in it looked like a mummy's head...and I also had a dream that something lived in the fireplace and when I got too close...it decided to consistantly pelt me with acorns from our tree outside....-_-;;

The theme from the X-Files. Boy, that scared me to death. I used to cover my ears whenever it came on. The show didn't scare me at all though. Just the theme song.

Oh, and there was this toy cat in my room. I loved it until one day it came on by itself. I figured the thing that tickled its nose was near it. It was on the other side of the room. I shut it off. And then it came back on. My sister and I ran down the stairs.

And I guess I was scared of lobsters. Because I remember my dad chasing me with one. He got in trouble. Nyeh nyeh.
But Dad exploited everyone's fears.

I was always afraid that wolves would jump through my bedroom window at night and eat me.

Also, when I walked past my window at night, there was a small part of the window that could be seen through the curtains, and in that part I could see a relection of my eye. At the time, I didn't know that it was just a reflection and I was worried about the person watching me.

Pain, I used to never want to play football or do anything that had a remote chance of pain. Now, I could care less and I play rough and end up hurting myself alot. THankfully, I've never been seriously injured.

Once when I was in about 2nd/3rd grade, I watched a show on TV where a little boy and fallen into the bayou and gotten his arm chopped off by an aligator. It scared me so bad that later that night while I was sleeping, I dreamt I was being attacked by an aligator.

So I woke up screaming, and my parents come running into the room saying, "Whats wrong hunny? What happened?" I tell them what happened and they tried for 10 minutes to tell me there weren't any aligators in the room. We looked under the beds, in the closet, and under the furniture.

Unfortunatly, I was not convinced. So I made my parents take aaaaaaall the furniture out of the room, show me there were no aligators, put it aaaaall back in the room; and then I still went and slept with them in their room.

How could I forget those. The worst are porcelain dolls. Like the "American Girl" dolls that girls used to play with a while back. I was at my friends house spending the night. I did NOT sleep in the guest room! There was a porcelain doll there. Imagine a doll going like: "Will you play with me? *giggle* *giggle*" or something while holding a knife... lying in the dark in your basement...

There was a freckled little girl in one of my textbooks who really freaked me out. (I guess I was scared of... freckles?!)

Also a big dark closet.

And spiders, although not when I was really little...

Fortunately, my parents kept me away from scary television when I was little. I still got scared of X-Files when I got older, and even today, if I watch something frightening, sometimes I get nervous when I'm falling asleep. (I don't even want to know how messed up I'd be if I'd seen horror movies as a kid!)

So you became scared of a toy you like too? I have a teddy bear name "Little Bear" (SO creative) who I made up stories about. I was basically his mother, taught him math and how to speak/read English, and rescued him from being kidnapped at the zoo. Anyways, one day he became an assassin and kept trying to kill me. Because I couldn't stand him staring at me, I hid him, and ended up forgeting where I put him for like 3 years. I finally found him this last year in my parents' bedroom. It's just weird, my teddy became an assassin! Actually, I brought him up to college with me...hehe...the memories...

I remember digging around in drawers in my grandfather's house and finding this Santa Claus doll with a brown shriveled nasty gross face. Terrified the living snot out of me. I refused to touch that drawer for a long time. Turns out it was an apple head doll my aunt had carved as a child. Blarg.

Goats.

Because I was chased down and almost knocked over by one at the very tender age of 7.

And Ostriches.

My grandfather raises them, and once during a visit one of the males bit my brother. I was around 9. They are not giant, friendly rubber duckies, lemme tell you...

Actually I remember one night that I'll never forget, it was around 11:00 I believe, and I went to the top of the stairs and I thought I saw someone's shadow. I hardly slept any that night...I think I went to my parents bed actually...

I was scared of the sound of airplanes flying overhead, I thought they may be tornadoes. Once I even had my dad carry down my dolls and books to the "tornado refuge room" or the downstairs bathroom so they wouldn't be blown apart.
