I need a name!!

Postby *Hope* » Sun Dec 28, 2003 5:38 pm

Please, anyone, I need a name for a character in a stroy i'm writing.
Bio so far

Name: ????
Age:24
Height: 6'2"
Weight: no idea what average weight for a guy that height is
Eye color: sky blue
Hair color and style: raven black, short, um for lack of an example, kinda like Vash's when Vash's is wet in that one ep

Personality: very kind and sweet, a true gentlmen, a devote christian, he has a troubled past that he finds hard to talk about, compassionate, he will fight when pushed

Other: Well, hm, the book's kinda a sci-fi but that doesn't really matter, orphaned, physically strong, has eyes you can fall into, handsome *blushing smiley* (sorry ppl, i had to make him handsome)

That should just about do it. Any suggestions?

Do you want a common name or a made-up-type name?

BOOSTER: Hey, No.1! Where's my cake?!
SNIFIT 1: Booster, Sir! There's a 70% chance the object you're standing on is a cake.
BOOSTER: What? THIS thing's a cake?

You have the power to say anything you want, so why not say something positive?

People who write below their abilities in order to crank out tons of books and make a buck. Especially Christian authors who do that. Outsiders judge us for it, and make fun of us for it, and it makes Jesus look bad. We of all artists on earth should be the most concerned with doing our best possible work at all times. We of all people should write with all our hearts, as if writing for the Lord and not for men.

Dorian is the first thing I think of, mostly because that description reminds me of Dorian Gray. I also see Eric working too.

While I can't think of a name off hand, I might be able to help with the weight. I am about that height myself, and at 170, am accounted a bit thin. I'd say 180-185 for someone who is lean and muscular, with upwards of 200 for a man that is powerfully built.

Eric is a good strong name because it means, "eternal ruler." Dorian is Greek and means, "of the sea."

I suggest:

Any variation of Nick or Nicholas, which means a "victor of the people." If he's going to be your hero

Seth, it means, "anointed."

Branduff or Brainard means, "a dark raven." You could go with a similar sounding Brant, Brent, or Brandon, which have slightly different meanings.

I'll try to find some more. I like Eric. I always think of the prince in the Disney version of The Little Mermaid.

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

Is he a good guy or a bad guy? There's also Tristan (full of sorrows, noisy, or knight depending), Aiden (fire) and Griffin. I like Griffin because it's Welsh and it means, "strong in faith." There's some more of my two cents. ^^ How much am I up to?

Dane/Dayne, Ronald/Ronnie, Jacob/Jake, Michael, Alexander, Adrian, Anthony, Steven/Stephen, Paul, Tory, Tanner, Ophus...
I have no idea about the meanings, sorry. Of course the spellings of any name can be altered to make it seem more fantastic, or more sci-fi.

I think another name related to "dark" in meaning is Donavan/Donovan or however you wanna spell it. Aiden/Aidan is a pretty one...I've used that one before ^^; Your character has the same hair and eye color as one of mine. Isn't the dark-hair-light-eyes thing so cool? ^___^

Edit: Hey SageRock, "Adrian" is one of my favorite names(used that one already too :P) ^_^ I think its meaning has something to do with "dark" too.

I also had trouble when deciding what to name one of my characters, but for some reason I have little trouble giving other people advice. Go figure. I like Chloe's suggestion of Griffin. I personally suggest Joel.
"Consider the lilies of the field. They neither sew nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as one of these. If God so clothes the grass, which is in the field one day and cast into the oven the next, how much more will he clothe you, o ye of little faith?

Though I will never name any of the children I might have at some point in the future this, I've always been partial to the name Jonathan *God's Gracious Gift*

Interestingly, my first and middle names have now been suggested

For your character, is he tuff? If he has fairly big muscles, try 200 pounds or little more. That should be acurate. Try it, and see what happens.
