WHAT THE CRAP IS THIS?! (Toonami DBZ Thread)

Postby Tommy » Sat Feb 11, 2006 10:58 am

Okay, so during the summer I remember catching some episodesDBZ Uncut at 10:30pm.

So they move it to Toonami on Saturdays once the school year rolls in and they get less viewers. Nothing wrong with that. They start from the beginning so I decided I`d wait a little bit before I start watching it again.

Last week I tuned in to see it wasn`t Uncut anymore, but it had it`s original theme song.

Then, the episode rolls in and I hear these new Voice Actors and EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM has a voice that doesn`t fit the character whatsoever with a probable exception of King Kai.

It's called "dubbing." ;) They do that from time to time. That's one of the main reasons I don't watch dubbed titles anymore. I just watch with subtitles and listen to the inflection in the original Japanese.

I thought Anime Insider said they'd be using the same cast they've been using since it originally aired on Toonami?

What they did was they some how decided to replace the Uncut version with the original Vancouver dub which is why Scott McNeil's voice can now be heard coming out of Piccolo's mouth.
The Uncut version is a different version from the Vancouver dub.Why they decided to switch versions only Toonami can say.

I know what dubbing is.

DBZ and DBZ Uncut both had the same voice actors up until now for the American version.

Huh? I'm confused. They changed back to the original dub, but it's still uncut? Or they changed back to the dubbed, edited version?

It's probably just a re-voice over. It happens pretty frequently with older series.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Alright... The thing that happened was...

Cartoon Network had been airing the Funimation uncut dub of DBZ. Then for an unknown reason, several weeks ago, they switched back to the old edited 90s Saban dub...

Actually, I heard that they didn't bother changing the TV-PG on the screen back to a TV-FV. Go figure.

TV- Y7 FV, you mean?

I remember when I was in third grade, I heard the same voices provided in Uncut.

Saban quit dubbing DBZ when Disney bought them out. Then FUNimation stepped in, and then proceeded to dub the rest of the series, and then did the first saga uncut after that.

I believe FuNimation did two different dubs. The one that is currently airing is the
Vancouver,B.C. dub because it was recorded up at Ocean Studios in Vancouver,B.C.(Yes,Virginia there is also a Vancouver,Washington near Portland,Oregon).
If you read the credits for the voice cast for the Vancouver dub you'll find a lot of familiar names from Inuyasha such as Scott McNeil and Cathy Weseluck.

I know they would not keep showing the uncut.

If you want to see the uncut your going to have to buy it.

The uncut dvd's have the dub and sub.

All anime DVDs have the dubbed and subbed versions on them.In fact Bubblegum Crisis comes in three languages:English,Japanese and Spanish.
I think the reason Toonami switched from the Uncut to the original dub was they probably showed all the episodes they had the rights to air from the Uncut version.

If they showed the Buu Saga Uncut then it would get much better ratings.

FUNimation hasn't made an uncut dub of anything past the Frieza saga, as far as I know.

And if what Kyle Hebert told me is correct, they're done with DBZ.

They changed the voices? Man, that's lame...DBZ isn't my favorite, but at least I have/had some good memories of the voices.

I'm sort of inclined to agree. But anyway, back to the dubbing - Majiin Buu cracked me up to no end. "Ready? Set??? GOOOOOOOO!!! BOOM BOOM BOOM!" There are sooooo many quoteables from that show it's just crazy.

I think it would have been better though if they did the entire saga from the beginning with the original Dragonball and then work to the end in DBGT.

I honestly do. I would`ve been tossing and turning all night wondering "What is Destroyer2000`s opinion of DBZ?!"

JK, I think DBZ is a stupid show too but it reminds me of my child hood and it is the show that got me into anime. Seeing it butchered like that; it`s like Myoti with the One Piece dub.

DBZ was the first anime i ever saw. and at that time it was good. but after you have seen it all and realize just how long it takes to get thru one saga or even one battle (what with the extreamly long speeches and prolonged battles that never really go anywhere untilt the end) you realize that it really isnt worth watching again. just my opinion on it. for me it was only good the first time i watched it.

well I think DBZ isn't too bad. Of course I think the battles are way too drawn out. WHats with 15 minutes till the earths destroyed and then 5 episodes later its 10 minutes till the earths destroyed. its like time suddenly slows down. I was like come on just smack the guy down and get on with it. I prefered what I saw of Dragonball to Z. I wish they would reshow that one. I don't like the series enough to buy it. And I agree the dub is bad.

It`s no better than Naruto. Spending an entire episode discussing the exams in one coversation or spending 6 episodes in the same battle isn`t my idea of an half hour program.
