*dies*

i can special order them from my pet shop too- AND since i work there, i get a 20% discount. XDDD
but they are like $200...
but still, 6 weeks and i will have that much. ^^ that means NO spending money.
but first i hafta convince my parents that i can get one. cause like... $200.. and then a cage.. and toys.. etc. :/
BUT STILL.

and and and and they can live up to 15 years, so i can like.. take it to college and stuff. o.o

I WANT ONE. and they are only like 10 inches, so i can carry it in my purse and pocket and stuff. and like.. take it to school.

...

ok maybe i cant do that. but i can take it to other places. :D *squeeeeee!*

Carrying the Sugar glider around with you in a shirt pocket or pouch around the neck, speeds bonding. Sugar gliders tend to bond closest to their main caretaker. When bonder, you will have a new best friend.

see?? awwww... i want onee......

I heard something about if you own a tame one for a pet: apparently they REALLY need attention because they can actually die if they don't get it :/ ...so I heard from a friend that heard elsewhere :/

But they're so cute^^

I think it's mean to keep a wallaby in captivity..O.o I mean..they live in Austrailia (as do these little Sugar Gliders) I don't think it's right to keep them as pets. I mean they are wild animals..

There is this petstore nearby that has this Toucan in it...a TOUCAN!

heh, no wonder our animals are all dying out...

(not condeming anyone I once owned a couple of exotic pets...degus actually, native to chili...it was obvious they hated being kept in a cage...they hated me too...I still have scars.. LOL )

A friend of the family owned a sugar glider, and from what I understand he really enjoyed having it. You really seem to want one, so I hope you're able to buy it, but be careful in thinking about bringing it to college. I know it can be hard to find a place that allows pets, and if you decide to live with roommates they would have to accept it too. My sister had to let her parrot live at home for a year when she came to college because she couldn't have a pet in the dorm. Now it lives a floor below me and hates me....but never mind.

Is it even legal for our marsupials to be sold in pet stores? They wouldn't be the easiest creatures to look after (many of our animals are quite unique and not made for house-hold living). I certainly agree they are cute, although we don't get them here, they like the tropics and bushlands higher up - parts of Queensland, parts of New South Wales etc

Off topic - I want an echidna!

I've looked into getting a Sugar Glider before, but unfortunately, Maine is just too durned cold for them. Be it true or false, I don't know, but I've read that even if they're with you most of the time, breeder highly suggest that you buy two of them so they'll have constant companionship. Now that I re-read that, it looks more like a sales pitch. Nevermind ... ^^;

Sales pitch, could be. But it is also most likely true. They are the sort of animal that enjoys constant companionship of their own kind.

Hey Chibi
I don’t want to sound condescending.
But I think you should go to the library and get some books on how to care for a sugar glider.
You should never buy a animal just because it’s cute.
And also even if you can come up with the money to buy the animal and the cage, you still have to have the money to care for it, the rest of it’s life.
You have to take it to the vet.
If it needs more food, or a new cage, or anything a sugar glider needs, you have to pay the $$.

I did some digging and found this

What follows is dietary advice from well known exotic animal veterinarian.

Dr. Johnson-Delaney Recommendations
Dr. Cathy Johnson-Delaney is an experienced exotic animal veterinarian and respected author and speaker. Her feeding recommendations are based on studies of the natural diets of sugar gliders designed in consultation with Australian zookeepers and veterinarians. The suggested amounts are per sugar glider, per day, fed in the evening. The amount should be adjusted depending on activity, size, reproduction, etc.

1 Tablespoon Leadbeater's Mix (recipe follows)
1 Tablespoon Zoo quality insectivore diet (e.g. Reliable Protein Products Insectivore Diet) , or insects. If using insects, variety is important (crickets, mealworms, waxworms, moths, spiders, etc), and the insects should be fed high quality food such as commercial cricket food, and dusted with a complete vitamin/mineral supplement.
treat: small amount of fruits, chopped together so the gliders can't just pick out ther favorites.
Leadbeater's Mix Recipe 150 ml Warm water
150 ml Honey
1 Shelled, boiled egg
25 grams high protein baby cereal
1 tsp vitamin/mineral supplement
Mix warm water and honey. Blend egg, then gradually add water/honey mixture. Then blend in vitamin powder until smooth, and then blend in baby cereal until smooth. Keep refrigerated until served.

It's legal if the wildlife in general was descended from something imported here when it was legal (or at least not illegal) to do so. That's how Mom has her kookaburra -- Southern California's climate is not unlike Australian bushland (heck, we even have gum trees up here due to previous importation) and they breed very well out here in captivity. ^_^

On the other hand, there are less reputable petshops that will sell exotics under the table, as it were. Dad, as a veterinarian, sometimes has to deal with those.
