i've drank a 2 liter of vault in 30-40 minutes before (370 mg caffiene, if i calculated it right)...
and 3 jolts (420 mg caffiene, i believe all together) in about the same amount of time.

I assume that when you said 250 mg and 150mg you meant g or kg shoorijian?

:eh: I'm pretty shocked to learn about the caffeine consumption patterns of some members. It's no wonder that some of you end up pretty sick and suffer side-effects. I don't want to know what else you'll pick up on a long term basis (I mean, surely there's only so much your liver can handle). We can't treat processed foods as if it's like water, thinking that nothing serious will happen if we drank gallons of it. With all due respect, I would urge members to practise moderation with what you're consuming and yeah, read the labels!

I drink coffee or tea ~ 1 cup a day (never really touched MD or soda drinks). Sometimes I skip it when I forget about it. So yeah, caffeine is not evil to me. It's like fire. It can serve you some function if you use it wisely. If you abuse it or don't control what you do with it, you end up hurting yourself, and personally, I think there's no one else to blame for it. :sweat: So please, do take care of yourselves.

I must use this opportunity to tell you all about my friend. He drinks two 2 liters of Mountain Dew a day while sometimes only eating a small meal or two or not eating at all. I don't know how he is alive. But he's not the healthiest... to say the least.

Good heavens, you guys. Just each your green leafy veggies and ditch the caffeine. Honestly, B vitamins (niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, cobalimin) go a long way when it comes to learning and memory and have the added bonus of being a potential cancer buster. Look them up.
My great caffeine disaster was about two years ago. I was playing volleyball with my family and became thirsty. I wasn't thinking and chugged a Sundrop (generic MD) in about a minute. I nearly fell over! I staggered into the house and had to lie down on the couch for half an hour the headache was so bad! Which is very strange considering caffeine is supposed to cure vascular headaches by constricitng blood vessels and decreasing blood flow to the brain.

Yup, and I gave myself another headache after driking 8 oz. of Pepsi in about 10 min. on Tuesday. My roomate had a good laugh over that. Normally I'm very careful, but again I was thirsty. I usually drink 16 oz. bottles of Pepsi over a period of about two days. Normally I drink Sprite or Canada Dry though.
I am ridiculously sensitive to drugs. I use Benadryl like a sleep aid, and drink milk to chill out. If I have three Oreo's and a pint of skim milk, I am groovy man for the next twenty minutes.

Actually, my point of bringing up Jim Fixx was that sometimes exercise isn't helpful. Jim Fixx, if you remember, was a big jogging guy, jogged like two miles every morning, wrote books on jogging, etc. The guy died at 52 of a massive heart attack suffered in a shaded street while jogging. When it's your time to go, it's your time to go, and no amount of eating right, exercising, and living healthy is going to stop it.

This is why I eat what I want, and do what I want, because we all have to die sometime. I'd rather eat well and die fat and happy than eat nothing but lettuce leaves and celery sticks and die thin and never having really lived.

You are able to prevent yourself from dying earlier. Id much rather live a full life till im 75-80 rather then die when I am like 55-60. Exercise and eating right is worth it knowing that you can prolong your lifespan.

I find it odd how someone would "Die happy" over something so simple as food. In the end, food is food. I see no logic in such a statement as: "I will eat what I want to eat and die happy" You're NOT going to be happy when you get illnesses and type-2 diabetes okay! I can't imagine anyone who would.

Sorry, but after the 70s or so, those are the adult diaper wearing years where you can barely walk and have dentures and need one of those medic alert bracelets in case you slip in the shower. You can freakin' HAVE those years. Me, I'll die earlier and in relatively less pain, thank you.

I did not say you had to 100% indulge yourrself in veggies and fruits. Eating healthy promotes a variet of foods. Your meats, veggies, grains, etc. Heck I'd like to try a lutherburger or a hamdog once in my life (I never will, as they are only sold in like Georgia, no way I'm going to a specific town in Georgia to eat a hamdog)

Who said dying young produces less pain? At a general consensus yes, but indulging yourself with foods will surely make anybody's early years painful as well.

Aww come on, man. I know some people over 70 who are the sweetest people ever. It would be sad for us not to have them here. Plus, my parents are over 60, and I wanna have them around for awhile too. So, I say, take care of yourself. You don't have to order that side of broccoli every time, but you can do your part. When you get to be that old, I assure you that there's gonna be some people who would like to have you around, be it your children, grandchildren or neices and nephews.

I hate to say this, but that's a typical, short-sighted teenage type of thing to say, plus you are too old for that. I hear that frequently and it has become a major pet peeve of mine. There are a couple of problems with that reasoning and additional factors you are not considering.

1. Eating healthy is not supposed to make you immortal, it is intended to increase your years and, most importantly, your happy and functional years.

2. Sure we aren't guaranteed even tomorrow, but that doesn't mean we aren't obligated to take of ourselves.

3. You can indeed eat well and healthy, just find what you like filed under the healthy category. Small changes help, and a lot of healthy foods are pretty tasty.

4. Nowadays, fat and happy do not go hand and hand like they once did. It is more common to see such combinations as: fat and immobile from joint deterioration, fat and blind/missing limbs from type two diabetes, fat and suffering from debilitating heart disease, fat and unable to walk, fat and in general poor health.

5. Doctors and relatives will do everything they can to keep you alive. My mom says about the big hospital in the capitol, "You will come out of there alive, you may wish you were dead, but you will be alive." You may be in chronic pain from joint disease or incurable, slow growing cancer, immobile because of fragile bones (more my genders concern then yours), partially paralyzed by stroke, socially ostracized due to the discomforting movements of Parkinson’s, or only spend half your time in reality because of Alzheimer’s. You may live it up the first thirty years, but the penalty may be the next thirty can barely be referred to as a life, and be more accurately described as a state of existence. Visit a Nursing Home and picture yourself living there for upwards of twenty years as they struggle to keep you breathing, even if you are rotting alive from bed sores and gangrene from being bed ridden for so long.

It’s proven that taking care of yourself extends your life and provides you with healthier, usable years. You may be different from me in this respect, but I do not mind forgoing some good foods and drinks (I could live on Pepsi, I will admit) to remain fit and independent well into my seventies. I'll get off my soap box now.

Eh, I have to disagree with you kaemmerite, and agree with doubleshadow. I've seen people in their 70's and 80's who are very active because they keep moving (read about one guy in a town I lived in who started karate in his 70's and got a black belt after he was 80). Yes, we will die when God decides we should die, but that doesn't mean we should mistreat ourselves to have fun. Our bodies are temples to God, we should try to take care of them. That doesn't mean eating a diet of twigs and berries, I have known REALLY unhealthy vegetarians and health food nuts. Just eat reasonably. I really enjoy many vegetables: Collard Greens, Spinach, Lettuce, Brussle Sprouts, and others, so I eat them as well as eating meat and drinking soda and whatnot. Just find vegetables you like and eat them. And don't say you hate all vegetables, that simply means you haven't tried enough of them or haven't found a prepartation method that tastes good to you. If you take the time to eat a balanced diet you will be healthier, feel better, and probably enjoy food more as you have a healthy variety in your diet.

Very true. Haven't you ever heard of the health pyramid thing? Our bodies need all kinds of things to survive, and protien (aka meat, cheese, eggs, and nuts) is one of the most important things. Being healthy doesn't mean you should become a vegitarian or a vegan. I mean, come on, that's just not fun (or very healthy at all, in my opinion). Eating right (yes, this includes steak...And salmon is very good for your heart, by the way), exercising, drinking enough water, and just getting fresh air are all things that can help you to live longer and happier. Did you know that if a person doesn't get enough sunlight, they become depressed much more easily? And walking is one of the best things you can do for your heart. Believe me, if you die from a heart attack, it's not going to be a joyride. And if you do survive, cardiac rehabilitation is incredibly key to bringing yourself back to a good level of health again.

Anyways, as far as the topic is concerned, yes, I do drink caffine every once in a while. Only in soft drinks or cold coffee drinks, though. For some reason, if I ever have hot caffinated coffee, it makes me sick (the worst occasion happened while I was at the Episode III midnight show...I had to leave early, I got so nauseous! :waah!: ). Decaf coffee is really great, even though I can't say the same for sodas. I actually went for 3 years without drinking a single carbonated/caffinated soda. Apparently, the carbonation gives you less room in your lungs, and it can also hieghten the risk of Osteoporosis. So, when I do drink sodas, I do it rarely. There's nothing wrong with having unhealthy food every once in a while. It's better, really. Moderation is the key. XD

One day I drank a bit too much Mountain Dew, and then I had a three hour bus ride from 8-11 at night, while I was tired. I ended up singing loudly while my friend hit me in an attempt to get me to stop. I was singing songs I was writign on the spot, one of them called "Time" has 1,440 verses.

It was awesome. I've never been able to hit my head on a locker so hard and not feel much before. (I was REALLY tired that night, thankfully, I burnt off all the caffine on the bus so I fell asleep right away)

No, they were mg. I should clarify: I draw a distinction between therapeutic (um, for drugs in general), toxic, and lethal. A dose of >250mg of caffeine at a sitting is not lethal, but it is toxic (i.e., most people start to experience deleterious side effects in that range).

Also, the "150mg" was 150mg/kg, i.e., 150 milligrams per kilogram body weight. For the typical 70kg adult, this means a typical lethal dose would be around 10 grams or so.

Where I suggested moderation, I was also referring to the other extreme of depriving yourself completely of a certain type of food or starving yourself. Come on, I love food! XD Why do you think I pick food science as my major?

The way I see about eating well, exercising and taking care of yourself has nothing to do with a desperate attempt to escape death (which is a silly notion, I agree). It's about taking responsibility for the physical body God gave you and practising self-control. And there's nothing wrong with living longer, if it means you can serve God longer on this planet and enjoying it. Yes, our body will eventually deteriorate and fail but I can't see the point of consciously quickening that destruction process in a semi-suicidal fashion through one's eating habits. We can't control the sun's radiation, the air's pollution, and the evolution of viruses but we certainly can control our diets.

One practical way towards moderation is to expand your eating choices. Don't just limit yourself to certain foods (even if they're your favourites). Come on, have some fun and experiment with different foods. XD Alright, gotta quit here before I ramble further on....

Oh yeah, Ingy, I forgot to mention that your sharing on the chemical extraction process of caffeine was interesting. I was about to question the method of separating caffeine from other compounds such as polyphenols until you mention sublimation. I've never heard of that process before but at least, I can't nitpick on it at this point. Hehe.

a while back, I took Midol, which just happens to contain as much caffiene as a cup of coffee per dose, and ended up in the emergency room with an erratic heartbeat...

a single cup of coffee will give me a headache and make me feel like my entire body is vibrating...

fun....

some of you said that you have drank several HIGHLY caffeineated beverages and "foods" in a row....I can't do that. It would more than likely kill me...or make me feel like I was dying at least!
