Believe it or not, I was just doing an experiment to extract caffeine three hours ago.

I once had 24 pieces of Jolt gum, 3 and a 1/2 Dews, and 2 Moxie energy drinks. I beat Metal Gear Solid 3 that night.

I guess I have a thing for beating games when I'm highly caffienated...

The first extraction step is familiar to all coffee and tea drinkers--you put the bag of tea in boiling water. Once that is done, the "tea" (there are some reagents that you add to cleave ester bonds, etc) is filtered via vacuum filtration and the filtrate is extracted via liquid-liquid extraction with a solvent in which caffeine will preferentially dissolved. I haven't done this step yet, but once the caffeine is extracted, the solvent is evaporated. What should be left is some dry gunk with caffeine inside. A sublimator will sublimate the caffeine out of the gunk and the gaseous caffeine will collect on the surface of a test tube with ice inside. (Sublimation btw is the direct transition from solid to gas).

i take it either you have a very sterile lab or you don't really plan on drinking that caffiene powder stuff. :P

Caffine powder is really dangerous, from my understanding a small amount of pure caffine is quite deadly.

Ya know, that's just scary. I start feeling a bit edgy from a 20 oz. bottle of Pepsi, I'd hate to see what MDX would do to me, let alone that on top of ginsing and copious amounts of Mountain Dew.

Ugh. Caffeine. We just finished analyzing the amount of caffeine and acetylsalicylic (ASA) in some Anascin tablets in my instrumentation class. I just typed a two page write up and I'm sure I'll need to expand it. Caffeine gives me head aches, too. It is interesting to note that caffeine makes you hyper using the same chemical pathways that some diseases use to kill you.

I'll have another Dr Pepper, please.

In all seriousness, I have overdosed on caffeine but in tablet form during long drives. This was accidental because I stacked doses too close and while I didn't get (fortunately) any of the life-threatening arrhythmias you can get from this, I did get unbelievably ill and vomited all night. After I finished emptying my digestive system and computed how much I probably had taken total, it came to something like 15 cans of Dr Pepper (45mg/12oz).

The long and short of it is, avoid No-Doz and Vivarin. Stick with a can of soda, it's safer.

I did that too, actually, in Power School once. I came into class, took two No-Doz, and drank a can of Mountain Dew, and still fell asleep. During the next break, I took two more No Doz, drank another can of Mountain Dew, and fell asleep again. So finally I just decided to keep taking No Doz until I stayed awake. Eight more pills and three more cans of Mountain Dew later, I was awake...but I wished I wasn't, because I was so unbelievably sick.

ya my teacher told us about a kid who was surviving on caffiene pills during college exams, ... didn't sleep a wink for like a couple days in a row. Then, after that, she slept for like 2 days straight .... without getting up once.

Then you know exactly how I felt. I was so nauseous I couldn't drive any more and had to pull into the nearest hotel for the night (where I unloaded my intestines into the toilet).

You'd think you'd develop tolerance to the stuff after awhile, but I can still get good mileage out of a 32oz drink (will keep me plugging for a good several additional hours). After that, there's a point of diminishing returns. Red Bull just makes me tachycardic and doesn't make me really any more awake.

Interesting... I wonder if that is why I was physically ill recently: due to the massive intake? I did get a nosebleed doing MDX once, but that stopped when they increased my blood pressure meds.

No-Doze with a Mountain Dew chaser?! I've heard horror stories about Navy Power school, but didn't realize it was quite that bad. I guess the legacy of Adm. Rickover is alive and well, then.

Toxic dose is something over 250mg at a sitting; a commonly accepted LD50 for humans is around 150mg/kg, or around 10 grams. To hit this, you'd need to consume something like 140 cups of coffee based on two average eight ounce cups and a standard brewing technique = 200mg. However, you can make yourself nauseous with only a couple No-Doz tablets taken at once, and you'll probably start to vomit getting past the 600-800mg mark. This was where I was.

If anything, coffee is far more likely to make you toxic than soda. A typical 12oz can of soda is around 40-50mg (see this table: http://www.ameribev.org/health/caffeinecontent.asp ). Odds are you'd throw up from the fluid intake required rather than the caffeine to get toxic that way.

NoDoz, Vivarin, etc., are 200mg/tablet, btw. LD50 = lethal dose for 50%

Heh. You have no idea, man. HOURS upon HOURS spent in that freakin' school building. Staying up until midnight every night studying, only to wake up at 5 AM the next day so I could get in and study before classes began. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

You'd think you'd develop tolerance to the stuff after awhile, but I can still get good mileage out of a 32oz drink (will keep me plugging for a good several additional hours).

I wish I could say the same for me, but I've always had a tolerance. I can drink a two liter of Mountain Dew and go straight to bed. When I was on watch in the pit, I drank three cups of coffee once (and this was ENGINEERING coffee), and I still fell asleep. Unfortunately, my attempts to stay awake with the stuff, futile as they were, only led to my current addiction to it, and now if I don't drink a Mountain Dew within an hour or two of waking up, I get horrible migraines.

Oy, you better try doing something about that caffeine addiction! Drinking alot of it over time can cause everything from nervousness to heart palpitations (I've read this, and my dad has had to give up caffeine because he has heart problems and caffeine triggers some of them). I drink caffeine on a regular basis too, but being addicted to it can have major side effects.

What about these new energy drinks that are supposed to be higher in caffeine than the sodas? They put them in these huge cans that I'm sure most people drink as one serving, even though the serving size claims to be 2 or 3

My friends and I have funny joke/thingy "He's been awake for 4 days straight, and now he's just going to sleep for 30 minutes?" "Yea man, power sleeping, DON'T TOUCH HIM!! He's clinically dead right now."

Yea, of all the all nighters that I do often, I don't really drink anything with caffeine in it, makes me feel just urgh. Just non-caffeinated soda and other such beverages.
