Interestingly, I've always said "PEA con". as in "PEA con PA ee" I think I've heard other Dallasites using that pronunciation, but I'm suspicious it is due to the "Grew up here, but have Yankee parents" life story that I and many other Dallasites share. It would be a mingling of "PEA CAN" (typical East Texas and Deep South) and "puh CON" (typical of many Northerners I've heard) into a brand new version, if my theory is right.
What I'm especially be interested in is how our many furriner posters say all these words... especially those from other English speaking countries.

It just hit me that another good one is missing from this list: Oil
Most of the U.S. manages to get two complete syllables of this: "Oi Yihl"

See, around here (Kansas) we pronounce caramel the correct way, by not saying the second a. That a is just a waste of space. You could be spending your time with something productive...like doing your homework, instead of taking the time to add that extra syllable.

*confused* How do angel and arkangel relate to Arkansas (pronounced like Kansas) and Arkansas (pronounced like the state - well, the other state)? I mean, I've never heard anyone change the sound of the word angel at the end of archangel. But with Arkansas there are two known pronunciations of it. The state is generally pronounced arkansaw, not ar-kansas pronouneced like Kansas. I think I did both ways as a kid, but just simplified it by using only one way when I grew older.

If we're supposed to start doing the whole Moses-roses-toes thing, why not just have people break out into song? "Singing in the Rain," while appropriate, would be too easy, why not "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General"? That would give us a good idea of people's accents (and I have the words memorized, what fun!).

The letter 'x' also seems to be an issue in some areas. My friend from N. Dakota says 'egzit' rather than 'exit.'
