Interestingly, I've always said "PEA con". as in "PEA con PA ee" I think I've heard other Dallasites using that pronunciation, but I'm suspicious it is due to the "Grew up here, but have Yankee parents" life story that I and many other Dallasites share. It would be a mingling of "PEA CAN" (typical East Texas and Deep South) and "puh CON" (typical of many Northerners I've heard) into a brand new version, if my theory is right.
What I'm especially be interested in is how our many furriner posters say all these words... especially those from other English speaking countries.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.

It just hit me that another good one is missing from this list: Oil

Most of the U.S. manages to get two complete syllables of this: "Oi Yihl"
Much of the Deep South, including some people as far west as Dallas, pronounce it exactly as "spelt" : "Oyl" (managing to get straight into the "l" sound without making a "Yihl". Jimmy Carter did this, and most comedy Jimmy Carter impressions got it wrong every time.
Those who don't say it that way in the same region, usually say "Ohl" (rhymes with Coal)
Many Texans, Oklahomans, and Southwesterners will say "Awl"
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Maybe check your language/keyboard settings? I remember one time I had the keyboard set on US International and it did funny stuff to vowels and took me a while to work out how to fix...

Yeah, if the list is incredibly long, it may need to be 'story-i[s/z]ed'.

Wisconsin
Missouri

Ohio

People from these states tend to say the names of their states differently from the rest of the country. The local accent is a dead giveaway.
And if they have not been suggested, 'again' and 'about' are great words for gauging someones accent.

And vase (vayz, I hear some Americans say) and narrator (narr-reader) are good ones.

I'll add them all to the list, but I think it needs some culling. Should we do this democratically (ie. everyone votes by making their own list of ~30 words)?

Kaligraphic, I did actually come across the speech archive site earlier yesterday, and I'll add that 'Please call Stella' thing at the bottom.

Was Kiba-kun's meant to be carmel (as in Mt Carmel) or caramel?

caramel :P (I know because I asked him to post his)
See, around here (Kansas) we pronounce caramel the correct way, by not saying the second a. That a is just a waste of space. You could be spending your time with something productive...like doing your homework, instead of taking the time to add that extra syllable.

I'd personally not mind saying the whole list. But that's just me.

I was thinking of mentioning that. I personally pronounce it arkansaw river, but many people here do pronounce it ar-kansas river.

But it IS how you pronounce it.... it's like angels and archangels (ark-anjels). See? Ark-anjaw sounds wrong.

*confused* How do angel and arkangel relate to Arkansas (pronounced like Kansas) and Arkansas (pronounced like the state - well, the other state)? I mean, I've never heard anyone change the sound of the word angel at the end of archangel. But with Arkansas there are two known pronunciations of it. The state is generally pronounced arkansaw, not ar-kansas pronouneced like Kansas. I think I did both ways as a kid, but just simplified it by using only one way when I grew older.

Getting back on topic, we could use phrases designed to teach proper English pronunciation and inflection.

Such as:

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.

Moses supposes his toes are roses but Moses supposes erroneously. Moses knows his toes aren’t the roses that Moses supposes his toes to be.

I didn't see it anywhere, but if I missed it, my bad, but the word "creek" is subject to much contraversy here in Montana. People are firmly divided between the 'crick' and 'creek' camps and debates can get rather heated on the topic.

So if they aren't already on the list:

If we're supposed to start doing the whole Moses-roses-toes thing, why not just have people break out into song? "Singing in the Rain," while appropriate, would be too easy, why not "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General"? That would give us a good idea of people's accents (and I have the words memorized, what fun!).
