Japanese characters

Postby KBMaster » Sat Jan 28, 2006 6:04 am

Okay, I'm trying to get pysched(sp?) about moving to TN by decorating my future room. I've discussed it with my sister and she has agreed(although she claims to have had "no choice in the matter") to red walls with black Japanese characters on the walls. Since she doesn't care and has told me to do what I want, I'm gonna be painting these characters, but I have no idea what to paint! If you guys can throw out some words that you would put on your wall, that would help so much! I need to start practicing. ^_^

First of all, do you want katakana, hiragana, or kanji on your walls?

pick some words and put them on your walls, maybe stuff you value, like "love" and "Friendship" and stuff like that. maybe put your names on there too?

Sounds like a cool idea! Since no one will no what they mean, I say just pick words that you think look cool and go with them, ha ha. You could put "celery" if it looked neat. :P
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

I know it's true that most sins are our own faults, but I still blame the media. :eh:

Find where her bed is and paint a large "baka" sign over the headboard. ;)

Do you intend to ever learn kanji later in your life? If you do, I would suggest choosing characters that have some significance to you; otherwise, you might be wondering in a few years "why did I paint 'foot' on my bedroom wall?"

Another suggestion I would make is to learn the stroke order for the kanji you want to use; if you paint it in the proper stroke order, it will look much better than if you don't. This site (a different section of the website peacetracati linked to) is an index of kanji according to the grade they teach them in Japan:

http://japanese.about.com/blkodgrade1.htm

Most of these are fairly simple kanji, so they will be less difficult to draw, and the site will take you to a diagram that shows the stroke order if you click on the kanji you want.

Thanks! I'll definitely have to try these references.
Uhm, Myoti, she was looking when I read that. She read it too, so that idea's out.
I think I want kanji on the walls.
Maybe I'll put up pics when we get all moved and it's finished. :thumb:

I would definately second Kaori's link. Namiko Abe has some really great resources on kanji and the Japanese language in general (I use it myself to brush up).

http://poets.notredame.ac.jp/cgi-bin/jedi-inon

Translates English to Japense, Japanese to Hirigana, Katakana, and Kanji, and then Japanese to English.

Though particles and honorifics (I believe) are no included though.

She's the one with the japanese-english dictionary, so she'd figure it out eventually. Although... I doubt stinky-head would be in there! :lol:

Hey, I'm doing the same thing to my door frame in my new room (painting kanji, that is). Stragne. Lol, I am such a nerd when it comes to Japanese.

Yeah, i was thinking of putting some word in like five languages on my walls just to make it more interesting. Maybe courage, or friendship, or something like that.
