Cooking

Postby Puritan » Sat Jan 28, 2006 2:13 pm

I was cooking this afternoon and though it would be great to find a few new food ideas or recipies. I'm a college student, and I try to regularly expand my culinary horizons in an attempt to keep myself from getting bored with traditional "college" food. I enjoy cooking for myself and trying new recipes, so I was wondering if anyone else here enjoys cooking and/or has some good recipies or ideas for meals. I especially like new recipies from other countries (I cooked Tandoori Beef today, the sauce is Indian, although the incusion of beef isn't). If anyone is interested, I'd love to swap ideas or recipies.

Wow, a college guys who cooks for himself. I never thought I'd see the day. . .

Unfortunately, my cooking expertise is limited to desserts and candy. I mean, I can cook normals meals, but nothing exotic. However, if you ever want the recipe for a mean three layer chocolate cake, or an easy recipe for chocolate covered peanut butter balls, let me know! :thumb:
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

I'm a fan of stir-fry myself. Throw it in a frying pan, stir it, and fry it. This can be accomplished with a wide range of foods and food combinations.

Peanut butter makes an awful mess when you use it, though.

I don't think there are limitations to my cooking style, I actually don't really use the microwave except for heating things up. And dessert recipes are wonderful! I am the house-fellow in a Christian house and we have meals together once a week, and having recipes for dessert can always help. And I havn't tried a stir fry in a while, it may be time to do that again.

Perhaps I should start out the whole recipe swap idea by giving an example of my typical cooking style. Here's what I cooked today as my meal for next week, the ingredients come from several recipies I sorta put together and made into one recipe:

Tandoori Beef

1 32 oz. container of plain yoghurt
1 1/2 cups finely chopped green onion
5 Tbsp. Paprika
5 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh ginger
5 Tbsp. Garam Marsala (You can find this at many Indian and Asian grocers, but I'm told allspice works just as well)
1 Tbsp. garlic powder
salt to taste (I didn't add any)
2 lbs. Beef cut into bite-sized chunks (an inexpensive roast cut is perfect)
3 Tbsp. Corn Starch
Water
Rice

Combine the yoghurt, green onion, paprika, ginger, garam marsala and garlic powder together and mix together well. You can also use a food processor or blender to make the sauce smooth if you wish. Pour into a medium sized saucepan and stir in the uncooked beef. Cover and cook on medium heat for 1 hour, or until beef is tender and cooked through. Mix the Corn Starch with just enough water to dissolve it (~ 6 Tbsp) until you have a watery paste. Add the paste to the beef mixture, stir well, and cook uncovered for about 15 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Serve over rice.

This makes enough for, I would estimate, 7-8 servings.

Sounds yummy. :lick: <-- (You still had some on your nose.) :grin:

I personally hate cooking, in general. I'm not any good at it. But Mith is quite the chef when he wants to be. :thumb: Check out our recipe database:

Feel free to add some yummy recipes, too, if you want.

Are you ok with trying stuff you have never eaten before (e.g. Lotus root)?

I'm ok with trying just about anything, so long as I can find the ingredients.

Here's a fairly easy one to whip up. You will need:

about 6 green cardoman pods and some cumin seeds
~1/4-1/3 of a cup of almond milk
a cup or so of seafood mix (i.e. shrimp, calmari, mussels etc)
green curry paste
pasta noodles.

Cook the pasta, and grind the cumin and cardoman seeds up together. Mix everything in a frying pan and allow to simmer until it looks done.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

I invented my own way of pasta sauce. Nothing compares to mine

First off: you NEED Angel Hair Pasta. ONLY Angel Hair will do, nothing else can compare to the angelic and divine characteristics of angel hair pasta

Depends how much sauce you are cooking, you either put in 1 or 2 cans of Tuna (Yes I said TUNA!) Along with Meatballs (optional) and bits of cheese and let it melt (usually provolone or mozarella)

Also put in loads of mushrooms in the sauce. Let it all cook nicely

Also don't forget to cook your angelic hairy pasta, that is a must.
