CAA Chess Tournament: I need your input

Postby Slater » Mon Jan 16, 2006 10:17 pm

Ok, since CAA tournament 3 went over and died under some rock in the middle of the Siberian wastelands, I've got the feeling that the tournaments aren't going over well because they have had their bugs and areas that needed improvement. So, I'm going to move in a slightly different direction and this time I want to know what you have to say.

CAA is now planning a chess tournament for those interested. However, the mere mention of this brings an immediate question to mind: how will it be done? CAA doesn't have its own chess client complete with a flashy GUI or anything like that. Therefore, we need to take special measures in order to pull this off. So...

Question 1: Would you rather play in Yahoo! Games or via Private Messages?

THere are pros and cons to both.

Y!Chess
Pros: Realtime, hard for anyone to cheat, easy to see and play.
Cons: Not hosted by CAA and subject to a constant stream of sexual solicitations in their gamerooms; Members may have a hard time challenging one-another due to Timezone differences; It's run on Java (which isn't really a con since most people have Java compatability, but there are still people who refuse to install JRE); May be hard to coordinate with opponents as to when/how to play

PMs (by Full Algebraic Notation)
Pros: Everyone will be able to do this, people will be able to play at their own rate and not worry about timezone differences, some people might like text-based chess.
Cons: Most people probably won't like having to play with Full Algebraic Notation, and it would be certainly frustrating for someone to play if they don't have a chess-board of their own to keep track of moves; Easier to cheat; Will probably clutter PM boxes and cause problems when they fill up

So, you see, it's a battle between these two options. Of course, another option is to hold the tournament's moves in Goof-off, but that will probably not be smiled upon by the Administration for numerous reasons.

So, what do y'all think? Oh, and if anyone has any better options to suggest, please do so. If there's a non-realtime chess client out there, I'd like to test that.

I'd go for the Y! chess route, otherwise this thing would take forever.

First off, I'd like to say that I'd love to do a CAA chess tournament. That being said, I think using Y! would be your best route. Though there are many differences in Time Zones I think that players would be able to find time to play, though they'd just have to make sure they didn't have anywhere to go during that time. As for the sexual solicitations in Y!, they'd just have to be ignored. And the table would need to be made private, making sure that none of the rabble come in.

I would be up for one in Y, but the problem for me would be the real time. I think it would be hard to find a good time that I could do that, my schedule is semi busy.

Hm, the yahoo option sounds like a good idea. ^^

Yes, the /b/tards have been sent back to their room.

Anyways, it seems like Y! is the way to go. Registration will start in 24 hours, unless people have serious objections to Y! in that timeframe.
