annoying project at school

Postby Bobtheduck » Sat Jan 14, 2006 8:22 pm

For "intro to business", a Gen Ed class I don't even really want to take, we have a midterm project that involves coming up with a business and demonstrating a business plan in Powerpoint...

Now, we were given a choice to do it ourselves or to be in teams. I was thinking "Well, teams should divide the workload; I may only have to do a portion." A part of me said "No! You don't have transportation and getting people in class to cooperate with you has never worked out right..." but I chose to work on a team... Well, I think I made a bad move, because they started work on it and did not contact me at all... They have a team name which is a little annoying (they call it team "cracker") which I actually learned of in the class, but the business they plan on having is a
strip club
which I found out a couple of days later from one of the guys on the team... Apparantly they had allready planned all of that out...

I really don't want this associated with me, nor do I want all of them to do all the work and I have no say. At the same time, I don't want to make enemies... There's no way I can get out of this team thing, I don't think... I really don't want to be part of a team that is going to propose, even in joking, a
strip club
so this is a bit frustrating...

Speak to the instructor about it. If you make enemies with them, well, it's really their problem for being perverts, if you think about it. You could also explain that their proposal goes against your morals. Be kind, and come up with a few alternatives. But do get out of the situation at all reasonable costs. I wouldn't be associated with such a group for anything. Ugh.

If I was in your situation, I would probably try to find a way to break off from the group and work individually. Explaining that you have trouble with your transportation methods might just be enough for a reconsideration among the group. Though not knowing how your class schedule, it might be too late for that.

Of course it's either that, or bite the bullet and work with them. In the real world, jobs often involve tolerating different people, no matter how low they might be.

Don't do it! Tell your professor that you have religious reasons not to partake in such a sinful activity, that it bothers you...

I agree .. tell your teacher that you don't wish to work on them due to your different value system. Let him/her know that the group made the business model without your knowledge and request for consent.

In the real world sometimes this can happen. I was in a similar situation but decided to say 'no'. In the end God saw that and gave me another job instead.

So I think if we do take a stand (and it looks like you want to), God will see and bless your faithfulness.

Agreed, informing your Professor that this is in contravention to your religious values may be successful. In any event, it puts the decision out of your hands and into God's hands (for the moment). It may still come back to you, and you'll have to decide what to do then.

I would also say that you should definately go at least ask the prof if you can change groups or go it alone, and cite reasons already stated above. Most profs are pretty understanding about things like that, especially if the situation involves such juvenile attitudes from your other group members.

Really, this is a mid-term grade. You should be able to have the opportunity to do the best you can. And this project isn't going to do that for you. Like I said, the prof should be understanding. Hopefully, there is still time for you to change groups or to start on your own.

Do talk to your professor. From my experience, most of them are intollerant of this type of junk, and a presentation like this would probably get a low grade and draw the ire of your professor to boot. If your professor won't do anything, talk to a dean, advisor, or department chair. This type of juvinile behavior is just not acceptable in college.

Even more to the point, you not only have a right to speak to your prof about it, you need to do so to protect yourself. This sort of thing has a way of snowballing out of control if someone takes offense. The more clearly you are not associated with it, the better.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.

I'm gonna try to drop this class... It's too late to pick up other classes this term, but hopefully my transcripts can take off the first english writing class, so I won't have to worry about it throwing off Westwood's graduation planning... I hope I can drop it, hope I'm not too late... I may be able to keep the books, too, for next term when I'll do the class keeping in mind that I'm going to do the project solo...
