On most forums this would have been greeted with a suggestion to check the usual suspects - stove, toaster/toaster oven, any heating elements (coffeepot?), electrical wiring, ventilation, &c. - here, we also get hauntings, demons, and respiratory infections.

Okay, so now that Mave has had it checked out, maybe we should all quit speculating about whether it's physical or spiritual. Maybe just let this thread lay quiet if and until Mave notices something else. The only result of this persistent speculation is to just possibly scare others. (And I'm saying this with a smile! )

And I'm glad you're feeling better about the situation, Mave. I'll be praying that all will turn out okay and continue to go okay while God gives you comfort, both physically and spiritually.

Well, besides that, the implication of the data of the damaged nose-nerves is that the rotten-egg/burning toast smell simply needs one's sense of smell overwhelmed beyond its capacity.
