Typicaly when someone knows somthing could cause a war...they tend to avoid it. I am sure all the threads on NGE are in the archives now...why? Because everyone argued, bickered, and hashed that anime to death. Noz's review was about the most clear and offical review we had. If anyone even remotely starts an arguement on this thread, it will be locked. Play nice.

Don't know, I only watched one episode on CN, and after being on order for forever, it just came in last week, so I haven't watched it yet.

No, toonami. There wasn't anything bad in it that I noticed. It was only the first ep. It was the robot week thing.

I didn't see the CN version, but I can tell you it was butchered to death. My online BF saw it... and we are both Eva fans... he told me it was butchered, and... for a Toonami showing, it would have to be, even the first episode.

The first episode, uncut... shows BEER! (Mistao's fridge)... it shows... the toothpick joke (people who have watched uncut Eva know what I'm talking about)... and a battle between the Third Angel and Evangelion Unit 01 that involves... lovely...juicy...sounds, a broken arm, and LCL (which looks a lot like blood) spraying from Eva 01's brain case... Yep...

I'm angry with Toonami for even showing the first episode... butchered as it was... They cannot POSSIBLY show the rest of the series - at least without cutting it to death and totally chaning its meanings. I fear kids seeing the cut first ep, then seeing Eva in the video store (I first saw Eva by renting the first two tapes from Blockbuster), and wanting it... and naiive parents will not know what they are letting their kids get into.

Yes, the anime is for people 15+ definitely. I personally liked it, but that's beside the point. It has violence, some nudity, sexuality, some cussing, and a lot of twisted and complicated themes that would go over kids' heads... (as well as the heads of most adults)... heck, I don't think anyone but the creators know what Neon Genesis Evangelion is really about/what it really means. I definitely don't recommend it for kids, and I don't recommend it for most Christians. I personally liked it because I could view it as interesting science fiction without letting the twisted symbolism get to me too much, but I know a lot of other Christians are not like that, and would find this series very disturbing. I warn all our younger members and those who like more "innocent" anime away from it.

Blame that on Cartoon Network's marketing department who are most likely determined to pick up every anime that involves mecha.

Yeah I say NGE should be 15+

I personaly liked it...I love the art. Yeah I'd say it was a good show but there was too much perverted stuff in it. All the "Christian" symbolism in it does make it sound better for younger veiwers but it isn't. I would have totally loved the show but there was too much fanservice. Aside from that I would recommend it if you like weird confusing plotlines and cool mech action.

Misato and Kaji are in a sexual relationship without the bonds of marriage. There are a lot of sexual jokes in the series,(the main characters are teenagers... and joke like typical teenagers) and, toward the end, there is a male character who falls in love with Shinji (another male character). The kind of love Karou has is... ambigious... him being what he is, but I'd say that he definitely likes Shinji in a homosexual way. There is some mild nudity, such as Rei in the end credits.

I'm not sure about the movies. I have not seen the movies, but from what I hear, "The End of Evangelion" is worse as far as... sexual stuff.

It's not hentai or anything... actual sex is not shown, though there is a scene
with Misato and Kaji where the camera is focused on Misatos dresser and you hear them talking and... moaning. Also there are things like the toothpick joke I mentioned in the first episode which in my opinion is more funny than pervy. Shinji is about to take a bath when he finds PenPen the penguin in the bathtub... gets scared out of his wits and goes running into the kitchen naked. Cleverly placed over his...assets... is a jar of toothpicks sitting on the table. Hilarous scene... but too fanservicy for many.
Yeah Shadsie basiclly somed it up for you...It has just a little bit more fanservice than Cowboy Bebop. I have not seen all of EoE so I can't really tell you anything about that. But from what I know it is pretty bad in some parts.

Since I have beaten down my opinions to a great deal about this issue, I'll keep it simple.

1. Evangelion is THE show that got me hooked on anime

2. To this day, I have not found a show/movie that has surpassed its character development, story complexity, or play on human emotions.

3. Most of the people I have shown Eva to and have watched it completely, have gone out and bought the series themselves.

4. Fanservice? Comon, it's down to a minimum compared to most anime you'll see.

5. This is not meant for young audiences, not because of its violence, but because of its complexity. It takes a mature person to understand it. If a 13 year old is mature enough, by all means go watch it. I know some 13 yr olds who are more mature than some people I know my age.

6. Speaking of violence (and blood), lets be honest with each other here. It's not an action filled series. My first amv was to Eva, and I grabbed every action scene I could find and jammed it into a 4 minute video. Lets see... 650 minutes of footage; 4 minutes of straight action. Nice little ratio. Now I know I didn't get EVERY action shot in the video, but you see my point.
And I'm not talking about the movie, just the series. The movie is a complete different ballgame. But I highly recommend EoE after you've seen the series. If you can handle heavy graphic material, it will answer all your questions. (it will probably confuse you more at first, but watch it again and it'll come together)

7. Eva is NOT all about Christianity, so don't go into it and think "They're making fun of Christianity!" There are plenty of other religions played out in Eva.

Bottom line, it takes someone who's mature in the heart and mind to enjoy this series. Not to mention understand it.

btw, if you want to check out my Eva vid: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=9235
It focuses on the pain/suffering the children must endure while piloting.

can't be wrong with Orange Kitten. but then again, here's my take in similar layout.

1. Evangelion wasn't something that made me hooked on anime, but it was the one that allowed me a whole 'nother dimension of it.

2. I too have never found anything surpassing Evangelion in all aspects, maybe other than drawings themselves, but Evangelion did it enough so no problems there.

3. I have gone out and bought the series, pre-ordered the movies, and watched it countlessly. my estimate is around 20 times for the whole series and 30+ times for the movies, each of them.

4. fanservice isn't as bad as other anime, but is still present.

5. for really mature people only. i saw it first when i was like 10 or something, but those days i was rather busy playing C&C Red Alert. i guess i was mature enough to stand lots and lots of blood without throwing up...

6. even though there isn't much 'action' in Evagelion, when it comes though, it's coming alright. there's a lot of blood. even more in EoE. 'nuff said.

7. Evangelion will only confuse you if you even let a tiny bit of any religious element into its equation. i mean it.

just an additional note... watch it, if you can tolerate all that.

When you think about it, how much "HUMAN" blood is there? Well throughout the series you'll see drops here and there, blood stains in Rei's room, some on Shinji's hand, etc.
Are you thinking of episode 18? Now THAT'S a lot of blood, but it's the Eva's. Which I would think would be more tolerable to most people cause it's not human blood, it's from a bio-mechanical organism.

If you want to really add up all the blood, don't forget to add all the LCL then. That liquid is bled from Lilith's body, and is the reason that Shinji says, on at least two occasions, "It smells like blood"

So, to me, not much human blood, which most people quiver about. Add the Eva's blood and LCL, then yeah there's lots.

I think I'm just a sick !@#$ and crave death/violence in movies. Yeah ^_^ I just want less happy endings.

true, but it's still red.

i personally don't care much about blood and gore, because even if i see [CENSORED (involves people with chopsticks)], it doesn't bother me. must be all those exposure to violence from an early age...

I really want to see Eva just to get what all the fuss is about. It sounds like it has an excellent plot, and I've read all the spoilers. One thing I don't get is:
What's all this stuff about Rei being God? {EDIT I know what Lilith is but how does it fit into Eva?}What's Lilith? Is this a religious anime?
*nods* understandable

All the exposure made me immune to it all too. (Saw Aliens when I was 6, and loved it)
But I just got sick of seeing cliche happy endings. When I was 10 and hooked on Ninja Turtles, I remember saying to a friend I want Shredder to win at least ONCE. So over time I started wanting more death in movies and wanted the protagonist to either lose or at least die with the antagonist. To me, it's more realistic that way.
Sometimes it just sucks when you KNOW someone's not going to die. It takes away from the suspense. How can you worry about the character in a fight when you know he/she's gonna be fine?

Sorry for derailing the subject. :-D

No, no, misunderstand me, I don't even know what Eva's plot is about. I just got on to an Eva site and it said;
Rei was God and Lilith is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Shinji's a pervert. Gendo an *******. Rei is cool.
What is Eva's plot about?

i have to tell here that no matter which site you go to (even here in CAA) everyone's opinion is different. the site you went is absolutely absurd in my opinion, and shouldn't even be noticed at all.

and it's impossible to say the entire plot in a paragraph. let's just say that in Evangelion, everyone gets a bad hair day in the end.

I don't know about EoE, but in the regular series... eh... not exactly. The end of the regular series is interesting, and I think gives a touch of hope in all the depression and psychoanalysis.

Eva is not my favorite series, but I did enjoy it, and think it is one of the best animes out there. It definitely is complicated, though. Is why I liked it... I like complicated plots that at lot of people don't completely "get".

Nge

Postby HwaRang777 » Sun Dec 21, 2003 4:51 pm

I think that there can't be an age limit on NGE. It only matters on how you take it. See, if a 5 year old was mature enough to not puke or get scared from a R-rated movie, understands that the movie is fiction, and the actions in the movie should not be reinacted, he/she can watch it. Not only that but some people that are anti-NGE, they only take it for face value. Yes, it is true that NGE is very graphic in the violence and some suggestive/sexual scenes, but the viewers should understand that:
1. Even the bible has violent scenes (obviously not graphic)
2. There will never has been a mainstream manga/anime that in one ways or another not be inappropriate (this excludes manga/anime made for younger children)
Not only that but I think NGE is in what I'd like to call the "Matrix controversial" because like the movie "The Matrix" it became very controversial, some said it's like any other violent movie and others admit it is violent but has a much more larger meaning and theme than what those people think. Also, even though NGE is very violent (during the mecha scenes) and somewhat shows inappropriate behavior, it trying to reveal something about christianity, God, and/or Jesus Christ. (I myself don't know what it is due to lack of resources and time), but if I were to give a maturity age* minimum I'd say 15-17 years old

maturity age*- how old the person acts
