Dude, this is most sad. I've been feeling kinda' nostalgac, so I decided to look up some Dragon Ball Z fan sites to go back to the days of yore. But lo and behold half of them aren't even running anymore! Where have time gone to? I mean, sure, it's corny as crap, but it's still not half bad, especially compared to all the garbage 4kids dumps out these days. Oh well, i guess i'm just ranting, but tis is still most sad.

I know how you feel. Though this applies to any general anime series and not just DBZ.

Some of my most visited anime fansites are disappearing as well, most of them having started in the 1990's. Fansites tend to come and go over the years and that the people who run them sometimes rarely update, or find it necessary to let their site's bandwidth expire - either because they don't have time to update or are disinterested in keeping the site online.

Unfortunately, most of us "oldbies" (I was one of the relatively well-known fan writers in the DBZ fandom) have gotten old enough and diversified enough in our interests that we gave up the DBZ fansites we ran. Mine was dumped because I kept getting kicked off of free servers, and I ran out of money for the one paid site I had. I know other former fans who lost interest entirely and moved on to other series.

Personally, I still enjoy DBZ, even though I'm not as big into it as I used to be. If you look through my manga collection in the "Manga Collections" thread, you'll see that I own a number of Toriyama titles - I really enjoy his work. But, his stories don't have the kind of depth and feel that I've come to enjoy in many of the other series I read and watch now.

Yeah, true, true. It's just kinda' weird. I used to be the biggest Sonic the Hedgehog fan around, games, comics, animated series, i liked it all. but then it all kinda' just stopped. i recently visited sonichq for the first time in a few years and it was still there! It kinda' changed though. But yeah, this happens with sites. I guess it's the same way with the dbz sites.

I've never gone back to any of the old sites I visited long ago, but I see what you mean. There was a time when I was a fan of Dragonball Z, a condition that was strongly helped by the fact that I had seen very limited quantities of it.

You would have to expect the majority of fansites to disappear. Most are fueled only by new releases and by immense popularity, both of which are now gone. There were a few that had worthwhile information, but the majority had nothing of any real note. Most of the former have gone for reasons such as those Lady Macbeth posted. Speaking of her...

I've always been "Lady Macbeth". No offense intended, but I doubt very much that anyone here has read my work. I was a moderator on the Saiyan Slash Mailing List, I removed my account from FanFiction.net when they instated the NC-17 ban, and most of the private archives where my work is found have an 18+ restriction because of content.

Yeah, that's why I don't post any of my writing in the "Writing" forum here either.

Reminds me of them old Digimon fandays... there were some great sites (some are still working) but I'm sure EVERY old Digi fan would remember Megchan's site with her encyclopedia... later one when the Digimon part of her site closed, other sites borrowed her archieved encyclopedia and updated it some.

Many of the old sites were posted on College servers it seems and when the person graduated, the site fell into disuse until final purging years later by the people maintaining the servers. LadyMac has it right about the sights allowed to lapse (so many angelfire links dead when followed)

You might be surprised what some members of this site have or have not read, but yes, in my case you are correct.

It seems to me that a large percentage of the Internet website population is comprised of college people's Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire accounts that die off after 4 years.

Theoretically it might be possible to find rough statistics on this if search engines were willing to go to significant effort to find dead links, but that isn't likely.
