Full-Time Engineer by February 2006.

This is just an update to those who actually remember me (and for others, if they want). At February 6, 2006, I will start my full-time job as a computer communications network engineer at a large communications engineering corporation in Florida.

Changing from a full-time Georgia Tech student to a full-time engineer in the "real world" will have several effects on my posting here. An important one is that my CAA browsing schedule will be affected. (My guess would be that it becomes more consistent, though mainly on weekends.) Also, my "frame of reference" in my post replies will change from a full-time student to a professional engineer. I hope this change will be fruitful and insightful to CAA considering that its majority are... young students.

I just got back home from Georgia Tech (and I have no plans to return right now). I will have to find a new apartment since my company is located in a different part of the state. For those who still remember me, I thought this update will be helpful. For those who don't, this post is probably inconsequential.

As a quick question, how long did it take you to find a job, and how difficult was it to find one? I know I'm in a different field of engineering than you, but just for curiousity's sake.

As a quick question, how long did it take you to find a job, and how difficult was it to find one? I know I'm in a different field of engineering than you, but just for curiousity's sake.

I started to aggressively pursue a full-time job at the start of this fall semester, which just ended. So the start date would be mid-August. I accepted the job offer around... the start of November.

It will be hard for me to gauge my difficulty since I accepted the second job offer given to me. I have had phone calls from other companies and government agencies who expressed interest long after I accepted my job offer (I had to turn down a call two days ago). You see, the job I accepted, was from the company that has been #1 on my list of possible employers for 2-3 years. It was the "ideal" company for me, and I was pleasantly surprised they wanted to hire me so quickly. If I did not get a job offer from them, I do not how the job seeking effort would turn out....

The difficulty of getting a job depends heavily whether a person's skills, experience, education, and contacts line up with the requirements and expectations the employer is looking for. Apparently, one employer thought I would fit really well. Another employer had a close friend of mine working for them who recommended me highly to them, which was the biggest reason they offered me a job (though I rejected it in the end.)

That will depend on several outcomes. First, how far I will be from Orlando. Second (and most importantly), how well I adjust and succeed in my new job. If it turns out that I can spare the time to meet you, I will definitely consider it.

Technically, I will not graduate until May of next year, but I have already fulfilled the requirements for my degree. It is now a purely bureaucratic process.

Corporate life is a lot different from college life

Oh, yes, I am sure of that. A corporation has vastly different goals than an educational/research institute.

It is a large corporation, where each major site/division of operation is in a different USA state. The division here in Florida, where I will be, is the biggest and the actual "heart" of the corporation. In terms of total of employees, it is around the scale of ten thousand of which half are engineers/scientists. The corporation serves all types of organizations in hundereds of countries. At this point, I want to leave it at that, as I want to keep some anonymity for the sake of job security.
