Pitfalls in new XP Upgrade

Postby Arnobius » Tue Dec 13, 2005 10:51 pm

Microsoft came up with some new OS upgrades. One of them (I suspect it was NET 2.0) really screwed up the computer, so install with care.

(I suppose this is where all the Mac people bore us with their "Ha, Our computer doesn't do that!" posts)

Well, it lobotomized Zone Alarm (removed all the saved data), caused several "recovered from serious crash" errors and finally required me to use my System Recovery (Thank God I got XP Pro) and scan the registry for errors before it would start to work. I hope I got it back to normal. We'll see how things go as I begin using programs.

If it wasn't Net 2.0 then it was one of the 3 recent security fixes

hmm... I hear so many complaints related to Zone Alarm... maybe ZA's doing things with the registry that Microsoft doesn't want programs to do.

Yeah... it looks like it's an incompatibility with ZA that caused this and therefore one of the security patches. Once I uninstalled ZA, it seems to have got rid of my problems. Probably try reinstalling later and see if it was just corrupted during the install of the updates.

To be honest, if you want a good firewall then I would say forget software altogether and go through a router. A hardware firewall is better and does not decrease system performance. I only have my Linksys router's firewall and I've had very few issues with spyware and viruses (essentially none since I started using Firefox for my browser).

Ha, our computer doesn't do that!

Why can't they just make something that works?

That might explain what happened to my box at work. After updating it wouldn't boot farther than the boot options screen you get when you F8. Finally it decided to boot so I was able to sys restore it. Almost had to knoppix the darn thing.

So if you don't update you're vulnerable to worms/hackers.......and if you do you're computer hoses.

I love MS.

Well, I do have a Firewall/Router already. My main concern with a software firewall was to make sure no trojan tried to sneak info out. I do have the firewall that came with Trend Micro Internet Security.
