Catching the VA's

Postby Wakarimashta! » Sun Dec 04, 2005 8:35 pm

How many of you, after watching so much anime, are able to recognize the voice actors almost instantly? Usually if it's someone like Wendee Lee or Luci Christian, it's a dead give-away since they've done so many characters. It's a little bit tough to recognize the Japanese VA's, but I've been able to catch a few of the more prominent seiyuus.

I can pretty much recognize Megumi Hayashibara for the most part, as well as Hikaru Midorikawa. Other than that, not so much.

I can catch my favorite seiyuu - Paku Romi, Hoshi Souichiro, and Kouki Miyata all have very distinct voices. ^_^

Yuji Ueda. I am a HUGE fan of this guy. If his voice was a man, I would totally marry it. I was listening to a trailer for a new anime once, and all of the sudden I clamp my hands over the the ear pieces so I'd be sure not to miss what was being said and exclaimed "IT'S HIIIIIIM!"

Yeah, I like him muchly. Especially as Morita-san of Honey and Clover.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I can almost instantly catch Kirby Morrow, Wendee Lee, David Lucas, Scott McNeil or Brian Drummond. Sometimes I can recognize the voice but not the name. Japanese VAs I have NO clue about.

I'm terrible at recognizing them on my own, but once someone points it out, I'll be like Oooooooh, I hear it now!

Wouldn't you rather marry Ueda instead?

I can't distinguish Japanese seiyuu either. They all sound the same to me.

Steve Blum and Johnny Yong Bosche. Plus a few others... I don't know most of their names, but I can recognize the voices. I can't yet distinguish Japanese VA's either.

English VA's are really easy to pick out, especially the Bang Zoom and 4kids actors. Japanese VA's are harder to pick out, but I am getting better. I can usually recognize Megumi Ogata (although I already know just about every series that she's in ^^) Aya Hisekawa, Akira Ishida, Seki Tomokazu, Kotono Mitsuishi, Megumi Hayashibara, and Hikaru Midorikawa.

I can recognize Megumi Hayashibara, but only because, for us old-schoolers, she was in almost everything made in the eighties.

I can recognize more English VA's. I usually don't have any problems recognizing Luci Christen and Hillary Haag, although I sometimes get them confused. They could be sisters.

I also recognize Wendee Lee, Lisa Ortiz, and Spike Spencer.

Yeah, that's true. But the more you 'think' you've heard a familiar seiyuu onscreen and then look it up on animenewsnetwork.com, the more you'll learn who they are and what they typically sound like.

Some seiyuus are dead giveaways if they are given similiar roles. For instance, a drunk teacher character from another series sounded exactly like Miss Yukari from Azumanga Daioh. Checking back in the ANN encyclopedia, Akiko Hiramatsu, sure enough, fit the role I assumed was the same person.

ANN is definately a good resource to catch VA's.

Moneca Stori and Veronica Taylor are easy to spot with their voices.Did you know, btw, that Veronica Taylor also plays May on Pokemon as well as Ash?Then of course the ubiqitous Wendee Lee.Michelle Ruff is another easy one.Rachael Lillis(aside from Misty and Jessie on Pokemon one of her more serious roles was Nagi in Boogiepop Phantom).Kelly Sheridan(although it took me awhile after watching Inuyasha to realize that 'Yuki' from Silent Mobius was also 'Sango').

I can identify a few characters from memory, but sometimes I use Tvtome to help me out a bit!

I can identify a few voices right off the bat like Mona Marshall, Joshua Seth, and Johnny Young Bosch.

Interesting note: The same voice that does Laura on Hamtaro is Kagome on Inuyasha! When I found that out, I smacked my forehead repeatidly! How could I have missed it?!

On an unrelated note: I think I reached my 100th post! Yay! Dancing banana time!

I can usually recognize Crispin Freeman. His voice is like in every other anime show on the CN. ^^;

For English actors, it's fairly easy for me--Steve Jay Blum, Dan Green, and Crispin Freeman to name a few. (Although these three are notorious for being able to change their voices and play more characters, and I sometimes miss those.)

Out of the Japanese VA's, the most I can recognize is Joji Nakata, as he's done both Alucard and the Count in Hellsing and Gankutsuou.

A good place for looking up English VA's is crystalacids.com. I like to browse there from time to time.
