thinpack thoughts?

Anyways what are your thoughts on these mass-produced goodies that Geneon and ADV have released?

I personally think it's been the best idea since... I dunno what^^ I mean you get the WHOLE series/season, ALL the extras and everything, same packaging (except in Geneon's Sailor Moon ones, all the backings of the cases were the same :/) AND you get a fancy box to have them in, without spending the extra cash! Most of all it's soooooooooo much cheaper than getting the orginal sets! Those are my pros, and I really can't think of any cons, I mean, it's just an easier way to get sets of the most popular shows^^ ADV's released so much and some real good ones too^^ Geneon hasn't made too too many though :/ Maybe sooner (and those one's are a wee more expensive too I find :/ Maybe with ADV competition they'll drop prices too!^^)

SO going alogn with this... what thinkpacks do you OWN?
I only have the Sailor Moon S and SuperS packs and hoping to get the Azumanga set soon^^

Depends on how much you like the external extras. Mostly it's the disks put into thinpacks and sold for cheaper. ADV seems to be trying to eliminate a disc (like 5 in Azumanga or 3 in Abenobashi) so you lose some on disc extras. Personally as long as the eps are uncut, I think it's great.

I own the Noir thinpack ^^ Its cool and it was cheaper ^^As long as it has the whole anime, I'm fine with it ^^

I don't care about extras, since I rarely ever watch/use them. So a cheaper way to get anime with intact episodes and no extras = good.

Hm but wouldn't less disks be a good thing too? Yeah some of the sets cut out disks, but the way I see it? Less space! I mean, 5 single DVDs take up enough room as it is :/

...well, because the DVD cases are half the size of regular DVDs and well, making roughly 7 disks into 5 disks in the set too also make them thin^^

As others have said, some anime companies are releasing "thinpacks"--a boxset stripped of "extras", though all the episodes are there, and they are significatnly cheaper. They're nicknamed thinpacks because the dvd case is much thinner than a normal one--I'm sure you've seen this used for low-budget films in movie stores. Sort of like a jewel case as compared to a cd case.

Personally I think they're awesome and I'd love to snatch some up.

I=love thin packs. I guess my heart goes where my wallet stays the fullest. Erego, thin packs all the way. I know a lot of people quabble about bonus stuff being thrown out, but, honestly, those kind of features were never big selling points for me anyways.

Now that I look at ADV's site, I can think only ONE negative thinpack comment:
For those who are still trying to finish up their single sets, would 1) Either yell in furry for the fact that they spent how much?! on every DVD individual (like me... cept I like the inserts from Angelic Layer, Chobits, and RahXephon^^) and/or 2) It'll be even MORE harder to fins some of the old single ones since only sets will be in :/

I really don't have TOO too many DVDs to complete (Haibane 1,3 RahXephon 4,6,7 and Chobits 6,*7*) but even now are they ever hard to find in stores without asking to order them in! Our with the old in with the new :/ And yet, I'm always seeing restocks for series like Escaflowne and Fruits basket :/ oy...

I was thinking of waiting for thinpacks for some of the DVDs that I'm collecting right now...usually I don't go for the extras, but DARN ADV had to put seiyuu interviews on the Matantei Loki Ragnarok DVDs...

In the case of the Noir Thinpack you can find that for around $40-50 opposed to $80-90 normally for the regular set. No contest there.

So I just checked Rightstuf, and apparently they're coming out with a Gundam Wing set and an Outlaw Star set :/ *sigh* If onyl they came out with thinpacks. I mean I have the Escaflowne "Perfect" Collection, and it's not quite a brick, but little effort was made to make it :/ I mean it's a blah blue cover with the logo. How attractive! :/ Although I think the booklet-styled case was amusing. But still...

I did find it amusing how they set up the Magic Knight Rayearth season 1 boxset^^ It's like a brick, but not.

I think they're a great idea. There usually aren't many extras on my regular anime DVD's anyway. This is a great way to save money and shelfspace.


Say, does anyone know if the upcoming NGE Platinum thinpack will have the commentary and stuff from the regular ones?

I collect a lot of anime as it's released, but I can't buy everything I want. the thinpacks are great way for me to round out my collection by inexpensively adding series that I didn't buy whne they came out.

The down side is that the original DVD's go out of print much faster. For example, I have SuperGals 1 with the art box that I bought on sale for $9.99. All of the otehr disks (2-6) are now on close out sale at most reputable anime outlets for $6.99. So, I could finish the series for $34.95. The thinpak costs around $39. The problem is, no one has DVD 5. So I can get 2-4 and 6 at a good discount, but I may never find a #5. So I'll probably just buy the thinpak release.

Yeah thinkpaks rock for space conservation for sure; I for one love special features. I feel like I'm being all the more supportive by finding out about the creation process/voice acting, but that's just me :-) Sometimes I do wonder though about some thinkpaks; for example they're releaseing the NGE Platinums in a thinpak, but I wonder if they'll gimp the features? This would be odd because besides the amped up picture/5.1 sound, the whole reason they made the plats was to include cool extra features that delved into things more with regards to the show. I dunno, we'll see what happens O.o Yeah I can get upset when a thinpak comes out and I've just spent close to $100 or more in a series individually. I get really great deals on eBay though (FMP for $50, RahXephon for $60, all the full series R1!). I really want to get the Those Who Hunt Elves thinpak cuz the show looks hilarious and a friend of mine really recommends it

Then she just got King of Bandits Jing which I wanna see. I know she's gone shopping for more today. I wonder if she'll pick anything up. Hopefully my Azumanga set is still there^^ I can't wait till I show the craziness to my friends! The opening theme alone made one of my friends go crazy and hyper :/ Oy...

I think the thin-pack DOES have the commentaries and stuff. I searched it up on http://www.amazon.com and a customer review says that's so. I'm not 100% sure, but you can go decide for yourself.

Anyways, I think thin-packs are awesome. Even though it's awesome to see all the volumes of a series on your shelf that took you sooo long to complete. That's great, but we're not made of money so, thin-packing is the best alternative.

thin paks are cool cuz they take up way less space like the rahxephon 7 disk thinpak only takes up the space of a regular 5 disk set so thumbs up

Sometimes it's a hit and miss, depending on if you bought the entire series before getting the thinpak. It's tough to know that the complete series that you bought a few years ago is only 30% of what you originally paid for now. The distributors compensate this by taking out some extras, which really doesn't do much to balance the original purchases.

I don't own any thinpaks now, but they do look inviting as far as the price goes. Might consider getting a set that I haven't bought yet in a thinpak.

I think most of the people here already know my opinion on Thinpaks ^_^. What's really starting to annoy me is that the anime companies seem to randomly choose which thinpaks have extras and which don't. For example, Azumanga Daioh and Pretear are just barebones; no extras, while the Slayers movie thinpak and the upcoming Gantz thinpak DO have extras. Why not just leave the extras in on all of them -_-. It makes it looks like the anime company can;t be bothered with putting the same quality into all their releases.

I'd tell you when I get mine and check, but I'm just guessing things like commentary, and thigns like that :/ My friend's Run Soldier pack had what appeared to be all the extras still included in it though :/

I myself couldn't really care for extras. Previews can be fun to watch sometimes, but the only ones I actually enjoy are "the making of" which are usually only included in theatrical releases. Either than that meh for me with extras :/

I have the Jing thinpack, and I love it. Though it was a bit different for me (being this was my first anime thinpack... I have some other live-action series that are thinpacks but they don't have the same emotional attachment), but as I see it on my shelf I love its space saving appeal.

As long as they also crank out a few limited editon sets (I'm getting the new trigun tin set) on the series i really like, then i'm happy. Of course, my wallet isn't. lol.
