Poll: Halloween: evil holiday or excuse for cavities?

Some years back (on Halloween) some kids came trick or treating to our house late at night. We heard them knock but pretended we didn't notice anything and eventually they left. Next they went to one of our neighbours. She answered the door, didn't want to give them any lollies because they were real brats and so they burnt her hand with a cigarette lighter. Nice trick there guys! To many idiots in the world!

I don't believe Halloween is a safe thing to celebrate. Its not that big here in Australia, but its still celebrated a bit. I don't have a problem with lollies and dressing up in costume, just the fact that its celebrating a pagan holiday, even if it is more commercial than demonic nowdays. But I still think it gives Satan more of a foothold. Some seemingly innocent things aren't all that innocent.

It was also "All Hallow's Eve" since tomorrow is "All Saints Day" in my tradition.

It has the satanic overtones because people who had no ties to the druids want to do satanic things. I think it more probable that the modern invention of Satanism (Crowley, La Vey, etc) stole Halloween to be satanic, not that it is a Satanic foothold.

its not a satanic foot hold... much is just cult related and satanic. Radiation still hurts you even if you dont acknowledge it is there.

I personally don't feel comfy around the whole idea. It's a spirit thing. My mom has had some bad experiences with halloween in College. And not just juvenile incidents... I really wish not to go on further.

The Witches Sabbat:

The choosing of the date for Oct 31 is no coinicdence. October 31 is one of the four major witches' sabbats aka the four " cross-quarters". First is Feb 2 honoring Brigit who is the pagan goddess of healing. Second is May Holiday aka Beltane, was witchcraft time to plant. Third August festival to honor sun god Lugh. These mark the passing of the season - plant, harvest aka planet earth death and rebirth. And last of the four was the Samhain which marked the coming of winter. Druids performed rituals to symbolizes the provisions by the goddess aka "time of betwixt and between" which is a season of supersitions and spirit conjurations. On 31 they returned spirits of the dead.

Costums : Celtic Druids idea that ceremonial participents should wear animal heads and skins to aquire strength of that beast.

Trick or Treat: from Irish traditions when a man led a precession to levy contributions to the farmers... so their crops wont be cursed by demons.

Dunking for Apples: was old practive of divination of the future. romance related


Cats: incarnated humans, malevolent spirits, and opf the "familiar " of witches.

Orange and Black: black was teh cermonial cloth color that covered the caskets, of death and the orange was the orange bee-wax that was lit at the ceremonies...

and so on....

so to me.... i watch what i do around this time.... make sure my heart and spirit is in check.

Also note... around halloween many pets come up missing... i dont think i need to explain why.

So, be careful and "guard you heart and minds" //// i say eat the candy and have fun but be watchful and know what is really going on.

Your kids will wonder about it someday.

If we're going to say that Halloween is evil because of its pagan roots, we have to throw out Christmas too, since it was a wiccan holiday originally, if I'm not mistaken.

Yep. I agree. Christmas, Dec. 25th has many pegan roots: Roman, Greek, Egyptian and persian. Most Scolars believe Christ was actually born sometime around Spring or so... So although I don't agree w/ the whole treat-or-treating concept, I can't really point fingers at others either. If it's only for the candy, then whatever... You don't have to dress up as a devil or anything...

That aside... trick or treating got old fast. It's just easier to just buy my own candy anyways. *shrugs*

yea... i decided as i got older ... walking around burns off calories... i like the calories to stay right on my butt where it should be, got to keep it well padded for emergency purposed. Eat the candy and make more friends

The problem with dredging up old pagan customs and inferring a direct link is it can be rather ridiculous at times. Some would claim that putting the angel on top of the Christmas tree is linked to a pagan Teutonic custom of impaling a person on a stake. Yule is a Germanic word, therefore Christmas is pagan/satanic. (Believe it or not I saw someone allege this)

Yes there are similarities between pagan customs and some Halloween customs. However it cuts both ways. Many accuse Christians of stealing concepts like the Trinity and Baptism and many other belief/practices from paganism. If we drop everything that was once done on a date or drop everything that superficially looks like a pagan rite, there isn't going to be much left.

Why shouldn't we defend the Christian elements instead of surrendering it to the pagans?

So people say, but I honestly want to see some numbers. Vandalism is not Satanism. I don't doubt some hardcore satanists (the modern inception is basically a modern hodge podge of pagan practices long forgotten) do acts on Halloween. But the person who eggs the house or vandalizes a graveyard is not necessarily a satanist.

I don't intend my posts to come off as mocking people with concerns about this (and I apologize if it looked that way), but I think it is important not to over react and take claims at face value. Thats why I want to se sources and statistics

That's not true at all.

Halloween is recognized as All Hallow's Eve by the entire Catholic Church, which has a worldwide membership of over 1 billion.

How many people practice paganism or satanism? Not a whole lot. I know maybe one pagan personally.

Most people who are not using Halloween for the Catholic religious aspect are celebrating it as a purely neutral holiday. A night for scary movies, candy, costumes, and a other such festivities. Nothing religious at all.
