There may have already been a subject about this a while back or more recently, but I don't know about it so...
They never really say in Cowboy Bebop if he died or not. He just kind of fell over and stuff, which leads me to think he did. It looked like a death to me, anyways. But I guess it is left up to you. Do you want Spike to die? The fans can decide and fight over it, that way everybody is happy... right?
Just a warning that any big plot revelations should be spoilerized -- place them in [ spoiler] [ /spoiler] tags (take the spaces out). So that people don't find out things about Cowboy Bebop that they didn't want to know, the subject title has been changed.

I think for the anime's purposes it's all over (meaning: PLEASE don't ask any more Cowboy Bebop out of us, thank you!), but it leaves enough possibility open for any potential fanfics.

Fanfics, yeah, I've seen tons involving Spike after Episode 26.
He dies though, although he's survived tons of worse wounds. If you remember the story he told Jet, he's the cat that decided not to live again.

I think if he had lived that the movie that came out afterwards would have been a sequel and not an event that happened in the midst of the series itself. Therefore, it's my opinion that the creators viewed this to be Spike's death scene.

I am pretty sure one of the producers died or somthing, and they rushed an ending to the anime. From what I have read, the falling star was Vicious...not Spike. And that they had planned a whole slew of more episodes after the last one. But with the death of the creator...or whoever it was....they just put a cap on things there. I always thought the death felt rushed, and not very genuine. I mean, the guy takes a .44 to the chest in the movie, falls from buildings, but a stab kills him? *shrug* Think what you want.
I always was amazed there was a controversy.
Look at how eps 25-26 was directed. He had nothing to live for. He lost Julia, found her again and then lost her forever. All he had left was revenge on Vicious. Falling over dying at the end made it one of the most stunning endings in anime. But if the series creators decided to say "he lived" it would with a single stroke destroy what made the series so memorable.
If they decided to make a second season, I wouldn't put much hope in it... it's like Knocking on Heaven's Door (AKA Cowboy Bebop: The Motion Picture) where it had none of the soul of the original series.

I wouldn't say NONE. It was just...different. :thumb: But yeah, if he was alive, that would've ruined everything.
I would have to disagree wth his conclusion though. CB was very stylized in the violence... heavily influenced by Asian cinema. I don't think it was rushed at all. Episodes 25-26 were very choreographed, with a sense of inevitability to it. Faye and Jet knew he had lost the will to live after Julia was killed. Remember Faye crying and Jet's just quietly grieving? All the signs pointed to everyone knowing what was going to happen but being unable to stop it.

Any conclusion that leaves Spike alive makes all the symbolism foreshadowed in the preceding episodes worthless.

Also note that these rumors didn't really start until they began working on the movie. Before 2001, there were no real disagreements that I had heard of. Nobody ever said the ending was rushed. I think it was wishful thinking of fans wanting a sequel

Have to agree there of course I think it's pretty much a done deal that Spike is dead. There really isn't anything concrete to back up that he's still alive anyway. There was TONS of foreshadowing before the last two episodes of Spike's death. Laughing Bull's "death by a woman" premonition in the first episode, Julia death and the end of his only reason to live, Spike's last words with Faye, the cat story, having Jet make him a last meal because he knew that was Jet's way of showing compassion, saying he's been living in a dream between life and death, his eyes, the falling star, you could go on and on.

And I disagree very much so that the last two episodes were rushed, they were two of the best episodes in the series. They were both done perfectly and the ending was one of the best anime endings ever. I don't recall anyone dying on the staff deffinetly not anyone major as Watanabe, Kawamato, and others are still very much alive. Perhaps you're confusing it with the death of the Gundam creator during 8th MS Team?
Or the much rumored death of Anno during Eva. Problem is so much of what we get in America is just rumor since so few people can read JP and get their magazines... and a lot of theirs are based on rumor too.
Its true, Spike did suffer greater wounds than a stab, like in the one episode, forget which one, he fell out the second story window of a church building and was in a full body cast at the end. Well, dang, anybody would have been dead, but no, Spike wasn't, partly because of the magic of anime and partly because he just wasn't supposed to die yet.

K, anyway, my point. I think that he died in the end of the last episode (though its sad to think, because Spike is the whole reason I even like Cowboy Bebop to begin with) because he'd finally accomplished what he wanted to accomplish. Revenge on Vicious. Plus, Julia, his reason for living, was dead. Though, I do think if that's one of the reasons he died, he was a little selfish for leaving his friends, Jet, Ed, Ein (can a dog be a 'friend'?), and Faye, who obviously had SOME sort of feeling of love for him, whither it be love or just friendships. But anyway, this is just one CB fan's opinion on the ending.

However, I'd like to think he lived, but then again, who wants to watch an anime they love and root for the main character through it and learn to cry, laugh, and unleash rage with them all the while growing to love them more and more just to have them die in the end? Its refreshing from all the happy-go-lucky endings in the entertainment world, but sad and it can make some people mad.

But Vicious was a completely ruthless and dishonorable individual. I strongly doubt anybody on the production crew meant that. Go back to episode 13... see what the falling star meant on that one. Throughout the entire series, the writers were dropping hints that this was how it was going to end. Anything else would be an "after the fact" disgraceful exploitation of the series.

Besides... it wasn't just a stab wound... he was shot several times if I recall correctly.

I believe these guys were serious fans of John Woo when they did this bit (The sword/gun switchoff can be found in A Better Tomorrow 2 for example. I recommend watching some of his Hong Kong films... look at how many end tragically for the hero.
But if you watch them and compare them to the CB episodes 25-26, I think that you'll recognize the trappings they borrowed/paid homage to and it really shows that they intended at the end that Spike would be
I've debated with others about this before, and we all agree on this point: the thought of Spike dying and the Cowboy Bebop series ending is nothing short of tragic. But you have to ask yourself: would we still be talking about it if we really believed that Spike didn't die? His death is like the last note of a song burned into your skull... you can't forget... you don't want to forget. In my opinion, and I don't think it is worth much but I'll give it anyway, this is one of the best anime endings ever, if not THE best. I think letting Spike live would have been predictable, cliche and totally out of feel with the rest of the series. Anyhow, that's what I think.

But even if I believe Spike died, I wish he hadn't. That is what makes the ending great...
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith-- that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

beautiful, boerseun! I couldn't have said it better myself (and obviously I didn't T.T). Cowboy Bebop's ending is a bitter sweet kind of thing, so to speak. Its bitter because, well...
Spike DIED!!!!
but its sweet because its different from other endings.

Still though, it makes me mad! Spike made Cowboy Bebop for me... *pouts like a five year old* he was my fav. :bawling:

Well put, boersun.
It seems to me he died. His death makes sense to me within the context of the show and it's final two episodes. It's the outcome that brings out the biggest emotional response from the audience and I'm glad it was made the way it was. I\Regardless of any desire, it was a great ending to a really good anime.
......if spike didnt
die then Iam sure those squads of men walking up to him would of finish him off anyway.so its a lose ,lose situation but then again he once again became the leader of the clan when he defeated viciouses,if spike did die then who is the leader of his clan..I think spike left to many stuff behind if he did so to speak die.like friends jet ,faye and his clan he could be doing so much if he didnt die,but then again animeHeretic was right heros does die tragically like the movie with jet li the movie {HERO}...
