Chrono Crusade is about a young exorcist by the name of Sister Rosette who belongs to the Order of Magdalene. She is assisted in her work by a demon named Chrono. Seems the rich with nothing more to do have started summoning demons in 1928 America. Therefore, their task is to rid the nation of this threat. Sounds all very religious, but as you get into the show you find that the Order of Magdalene is not really a religious order. The habits they wear are really nothing more than uniforms and their titles nothing really more than that.

There's a great deal of violence, blood and demonic activity. The show has it's light hearted moments, which at this point take up about half of the production. However, I have a feeling that this will soon take a turn and the show will become darker in nature. Chrono's power as a demon feeds off of the life force of Rosette. She is resolved to the fact that she will not reach the age of 30 because of this.

It is definately not one I'll show the kiddos at this point because the religious imagry is twisted and it has a 9 of 10 scale for bad dreams. I had already ordered volume 2 before volume 1 had arrived. I doubt I'll get much further than that on this title.

According to the show's mythos, the Order of Madeline is an order created from all of the denominations - both catholic and protestant (and perhaps also non-Christians religions) - for the purpose of fighting these demons. I would agree that it’s not for children in that the poor and improper use religious imagery could be very confusing to them.

I’ve started collecting the series as well and will probably continue to. It could get very dark, as Doc said, but I have a feeling the ending will be an acceptable one.

Oh, and as far as other "objectionable material" - there's no sex or nudity, although one of the characters is a bit of a lech.

Sorry, guys, but I felt lame making a new thread when this one's already here. So, as a continuation of this question:

At the time of this question, only a few volumes had been released. Now, after it's all been released, can anyone tell me if there's any sexuality or nudity in this later volumes of this anime?

I think the sexuality/nudity is primarily in the first few volumes - shower scenes and the like. There are a couple less fanservicy instances of nudity where Rosette is in sort of a spirit form, and that I don't quite see as terribly offensive.

But just my own personal word of advice - the manga is much better in my opinion. I think it struck me as having a little less whacked-out theology.

I agree with Kokoro Daisuke. The manga is better but the anime isn't far behind.

As far as sex and nudity there isn't much. The story focuses on Rossette and Chronos struggle with Aion. However it should be said that Aion is a bit sensual with the female's he comes across. He goes after Stella and Rossette at points, but its nothing explicit, that I can remember. Rossette does get a bit of clothing blasted and slashed off in one fight. As far as the religious content agree with above posts: not for kids or those with a new spiritual ground, but for those with a basis in the truth its not to hard to pick whats wrong. If anyone is interested in my opinions on the religious content or the fact that an Exorsits runs around with a Demon PM me.

I really like this one. Manga and anime. Well written and good art. But it is pretty tripy in the religious department and gets dark and violent.

It's a mixed bag for me to recommend this. Regarding the art, characters, and overall story, it's beautiful. There are in fact some very cool points made about God's character throughout the show that I might not have thought of otherwise. However, as Doc somewhat previously mentioned, there's a good deal of skewed theology; while this kind of thing doesn't always send me running for the hills, I guess the thing mainly bothered me was that unlike shows that use religious symbolism (i.e. Evangelion), this show actually uses Scripture and Biblical events as its backdrop, the Apocalypse, rather than just mere symbolism. Also, without giving spoilers, by the end of the show, the impression that the viewer is given of God and His overall view of us and Hand in things is well...... not negative, but also not positive. To me, it was kinda of the "blind watchmaker" view of God by the end of the show, meaning "yes, He created us and cares about the quality and endurance of His work, but for the most part He sits back and observes while we wait on Him....". Like I said a great show, but the qualms I had about it I found to be rather serious compared to any misgivings I've had about previous titles. I ended up selling the whole series due to this, but it was really hard for me to do so :-( Let me know your thoughts, and hope this helps :-)

Ive only read a teensy bit of the manga in Newtype and there was(once again) the famaous old-guy perverted kind of character. At one point he asks if he can touch a private area on Rossete for reason or another. Anyway thats all ive read.

I found this show to be strange and as said before skewed in the theology department, but I do enjoy the show and the animation. I don't like Aion though after he made fun of God in one episode. He has a cool character design but I don't like him.

I find that mangaka and writers purposely make certain characters absolutely despisable, and I think that this is the case with Aion. You're SUPPOSED to hate him despite his good looks, so Daisuke Moriyama definitely did a good job with the character deisgn

I have to agree. The fact that you can hate him so much makes it almost like you are a part of the show.

I haven't seen the anime, but I've heard that the anime creators made Aion really, really evil, which is sad because I really like Aion in the manga.

Just bought the entire collection. I am hoping it is slightly based of Radical Dreamers... the logo is spitting image of the Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross -- so here is to hope...so far the 1st episode is pretty good.

I have survived watching the entire series. It's not for children, has some fan service, and quite a lot of skewed theology.

At the same time, I think some parts of it could be used as contrasts to proper theology and remove misconceptions about Christianity.

I watched the whole series. Had nightmares from it, was totally disgusted by the end of it, was offended by the theology, and it just totally creeped me out. It was my first anime series.

However, I loved the characters and the animation. The fight scenes were cool, too. But I don't think I'll be watching it again.

They should have ended it a good five minutes before they did because there was a sort of epilogue that made absolutely no sense at all and seemed to suggest that perhaps the good guys DIDN'T win, and all the sacrifices and hard times they went through were for nothing! I can't stand endings that are ambiguous like that!

Mine has extras on it, such as character profiles in the form of newspaper articles, and some explanations of the weapons the characters used (contained as additional stuff on the DVD).

The thinpack is the boxset of the whole series, but the DVD cases are thinner than normal, so you get the name thinpack. As far as I'm aware, ADV is the only company that uses the slim cases for their boxsets on a large scale.

I find it odd how some of the thinpack boxsets have extras and some don't. I have thinpacks of Pretear, King of Bandit: Jing, Peacemaker, and Kaleido Star, but I don't think any of them had any extras on them, but then my friend has the thinpack of Rahxephon and it does have the extras. Maybe it has something to do with the popularity of the show or something.
