I've heard the manga is pretty good, (loved the anime) but I was wondering which is the superior publishing of the manga series.
Is it the Viz Perfect Collection of 4 thick volumes or the Viz 2nd Edition collection of 7 thinner volumes? I want to get the right ones - with original right to left reading, good size images, sound effects in Japanese and no cut out bits.
If its the 7 one, I'll buy the first and see if I like it, then buy the rest later (manga isn't cheap in Australia).
Can anyone help?

I wrote a review of the manga - you might really want to check it out.
The Perfect Collection is complete (so to speak) but its flipped (reads left to right) and is smaller in size than the Editor's Choice Editions (which are 1-7 volumes). I recommend the volumes 1-7 because the pages are bigger and its helps considering how detailed Miyazaki's art is. Off course the Perfect Collection (which is out of print) is cheaper though.

Thanks J! I read your review but must have missed that part. I think I'll go for the 1-7 volume set then. Amazon.com lists them as about 10 inches high by 7 inches wide! Is that right? Seems very large for a manga.

Oh the above mentioned info is not from the review, just off the top of my head. I was very harsh on the manga though - it was just very dissapointing for me.
Correct - it is large for a manga but because its so detailed its actually better that way. You can't fully appreciate Leonardo da Vinci paintings on small cards, can you?

Yes, definately go with the 7-volume set. I compared them in the bookstore, and you lose soooo much detail in the smaller format. ^_^/

You'll choose the "editor's choice edition" if you value your eye sight.

Miyazki has an insane amount of inking and detail on every page. The perfect collection craps the frames until some of them are almost nauseatingly busy. IMHO. Overall, that edition didn't do the work justice.
