My boyfriend bought me a promise ring...it is so pretty!
I thought it was a sweet gesture...seeing as he knows he has to ask my dad if he can marry me before he proposes engagement.
But....
certain people that I know think it is stupid that he would even spend the money on such a thing...they say he should have just bought me an engagement ring.
I don't know...
like I said, I think it's sweet....even though he said I can't have it yet...because he DID say that...because it isn't the right size (it's a little too big....)
hmmmm.....

Just keep it in thought. Ask God and see what He thinks. You never know, sometimes we loose things when we least expect it but I believe that if you wear this ring and keep it in mind a lot (which I don't think would be hard) then there's no way you could loose it! ^_~*

Maybe you could wear it on a necklace until you can get it resized.

Aaaaw, that's so so so so sweet! You're lucky! ;)
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

I think it's nice of him. Plus I agree, it's always nice to consent the parents before asking to marry their daughter; more respectful I think.

I know what an engagement ring is, but what specifically is a promise ring? A promise that they are/have been exclusive? Like a step under engagement; eventually plan on getting engaged?

Sorry, I don't know much about that stuff... :)

Above is a link to a place that has info onthe meaning and history of promise rings.
For Steve and myself, it is pre-engagement.
...and I agree that the tradition of asking the father for their daughter's hand in marriage is more respectful...kinda romantic, too, if you think about it.

and, thanx for the congratulations.

Same here. A girl's father is the best person to screen prospective husbands, and having the man ask the girl's father for her hand in marriage shows he respects both her and the father. I'm all for it too!

my husband bought me a promise ring.

no engagement ring

bought me a wedding ring.

TO me, i think an engagement ring is kinda pointless because you have to get another one in a couple of months neways... well unless you have those interlocking wedding/engagement rings.

I also had a purity ring that was on my wedding finger and i put my promise ring on my other hand.

As a guy, I got briefed by other (men) that you should be very careful buying your girlfriend ANY ring, unless it's THAT ring (engagement). Because she might just take it that way, and you know how we feed about commitment. XD

That said, I think the ring is a very important symbol of bonding. If you are both communicating well and understand what it means, cool.

Oh, and don't shoot him cause he got the wrong size (Do my fingers look fat to you?), it takes serious sleuth work (or theft) to figure out someone's ring size short of blatantly asking them. Good Luck! :thumb:

Oh...I didn't shoot him. I just told him that it didn't matter that it is a little too big...that I wanted it NOW!!!! because...why did he show it to me, if he wasn't going to let me have it....

Oh, wow...I didn't realize that promise rings were used for reasons other than pre-engagement. I feel slightly "unlearned" now, lol.

I don't know of many people that use them here, but they've always been used as pre-engagement rings here.

*feels naive* ^^;;

Hey...don't feel bad....before I googled it I thought they were merely pre-engagement as well...
even though, I have heard of giving children or....pre-adolescents rings as a vow of abstinence til marriage.

Ah, that makes me feel better, than.

I've heard of the abstinence rings, but I've always seen the "true love waits" rings, though.

At any rate, I think promise rings are an incredibly sweet guesture. Good guy you've got there :)

Myself, since we're marginally on the topic, I'd probably side with SP1. I come from the background where a ring means "something," so if I were to give a ring to that special someone, it would probably be an engagement ring right off the bat.

I know it does, and I'm sure it wasn't given to you flippantly, but I figure if I'm giving a ring to anyone, it will have a marriage proposal attached to it. That's just me, natch.

You know, the whole concept of trading class rings while you are seriously dating sort of fixes this one. Though it has the drawback of simply not working sometimes.

When I went to get my wife's rings, I was more subtle, though. She had given me one of her rings at one point, and I found out it fit my pinky fairly good. So when I went shopping, I just used that to fogure it out. *shrugs*
