Talk about anything in here.

what kind of car do you drive?

Postby heero yuy 95 » Thu Oct 13, 2005 3:09 pm

Hey, everybody! I just recently got a 1981 Chevy El Camino (my first car!!), and I thought it would be pretty cool to start thread dedicated to the cars we drive. You all can tell a little about the autos you drive, and maybe give some additional info, such as the engine it has, etc. My el Camino has a four-barrel 305 v-8. I know it may not be super-powerful, but it gets ok mileage. So, tell us about your cars!

Don't have a car because I'm to young but I think when I get older I'll consider buying a Honda or Mitsubishi because the Japanese make really good vehicles.

Yes, that's true. My brother has a Honda, ummm, I think it's a civic, but I'm not sure, but as far as reliability and mileage go, hondas are pretty good cars.

The 305 isnt much compared to a 350. My first car (a rusted out 79 el camino with a 350 pulled out of a wrecked stingray) was pretty good. It got 15 to 18 mpg (it didn't matter much about 3 years ago). And now I drive a 60 thunderbird (see profile) in good weather and a 91 ranger as a beater.

Also eriana mitsubishi untill 06, when the redisgned most of there engines, mitsubishi had some of the WORST motors you could get. They had almost no life and were heck to fix (i have worked on several of them....they are the worst car ever to work on due to the lack of space, poor design, and poor quality parts.) Honda on the other hand (though unoriginal styling) have very good motors and are very reliable cars.

My mom owns a Honda minivan and it's awesome, great mileage, fast and durable, every that you want from a car probably. ^^
So, yeah, when I get older (probably when I'm in College), I'll try to scrap up enough cash to get a Honda or Mitsubishi. So how is your car? Sounds pretty cool from the post above.

Seriously do not get a pre 05-06 honda! They completely redesigned a lot of there engines for a reason. Secondly whatever you do DONT put a big huge spoiler on the back of a front wheel drive car, for the love of all things automotive dont do it!

In that case Honda it is. ^^
My dad was a mechanic and actually his father worked on rockets for outer space and bombs, he was a genius from what I here, but thanks for the advice, I'll really try to remember this when it comes time for me to buy a car.

A brand I would suggest since you like imports is mazda. The rotary is a very unique engine so it has some drawbacks (price for repairs and its not quite as long life as some 6 cylindars but its life is about the same as most 4 cylindars). But overall they are a very good brand.

Secondly you may want to consider this... a general rule on dependibility and easy of maintence. The 4 cylindars (especially the sporty ones) wear out very very quickly compared to other engines and cost more to fix when they do break down. V-6's are average in life and are the best for your average person (better life generally then the in line or slant 4 motors of today and are cheaper to fix). Thirdly most, MOST v-8s that are not beat upon last for a very very long time. The 350 falls under this never die policy.

This rule doesnt apply to everything but it is a good rule of thumb.

Secondly to clarify why i said no big spoilers on a front wheel drive. A spoiler puts downforce on the back, if the drive is not in the back but in the front and you put downforce in the back you are hurting handling gas mileage and power.

(and sorry i mistyped about the honda i ment mistsubishi)

You may want to consider a dodge dakota since most of the non tiny (my ranger is quite to small...) trucks of the other two of the big three, that aren't super small are very very expensive.

Otherwise I would suggest for you a buick riviera (nice cars at affordable prices), dodge neon or grand am. You can also sometimes find late model rx-7's and civics cheap. Around here dodge dakotas are going for about 6 or 8 grand. the s-10 and ranger are much cheaper but if you want any kind of room or the chance to have a v-8 i would aviod them otherwise go for them.

I was THIS close to getting an 80's Corvet. But, I can't drive yet, so my parents decided against it! Gotta wait till next year.

When I can drive, I want something black. Like the batmobile! haha. That's one cool car!

Chevy Malibu or Impala (they're my parents' cars). The Impala's a little too frilly for my taste, but the steering is good. The Malibu is smaller and simple.

My daily driver is a Taurus. My pride and joy, however is a 1995 Thunderbird V8. Image
My dream is to turn it into a 400+hp, street-legal roadracer. I miss the powerslides, the feedback from the front wheels, the burnouts  All of which are things of the past due to FWD. The Taurus is about as fun to drive as filling out presidential prisoner release forms on planet Vogosphere. :(
