> First off anyone remember a certain scene in Indiana Jones?

Heh -- it wasn't even in the original script. Apparently, Indy was supposed to battle the swordsman with his bullwhip, but Harrison Ford reportedly had the flu and pantomimed shooting his opponent instead. Everyone loved the idea, so they filmed it for real.

It plays into what we scream in movie theaters all the time: "HEY, DUMMY! YOU HAVE A GUN, SO SHOOT HIM!!!"

It was funnier when he tried to do it in "The Temple of Doom," but didn't have his gun, forcing him to run away like a little sissy boy.

Me like swords. Swords are cool.

This is a rather old (and long) topic, isn't it?
Why was it resurrected?

For every Himura Battosai there is a Nick Stone who finds firearms a lot more effective. I say guns.

Though swords do look very cool if used properly.

Swords rule! ( Guns are okay, but come on, nothing can really beat a classic weapon like the sword)

Yeah...nothing could beat a sword. Except a nuke, or a flamethrower, or a machine gun, or a sniper...

The list goes on and on.

Btw, does anyone actually know whether you could deflect a bullet with a sword, especially without damaging the blade?

cant do it w/ out damaging the blade....
I think its possible, but you would have to be very lucky, there have been incedents of dueling bullets deflecting each other so its a possibility, though its more likely it would go partway into the sword or somthin...also depends on the angle of the sword and the type of bullet

That's what I thought. So in that case, guns win except in the situations I described earlier.

Depends what kind of bullet and what kind of sword/blade you've got. Todays guns vs sword. (Laughs) No chance, the sword would break in half most likely.

For all the Kenshin fans, here is a quote that you may want to consider:

"All those samurai could not bear their eclipse by commoners, the abandonment of old dress and ways, the usurpation of their monopoly of war by general military conscription (1872). So in 1878 the Satsuma warriors, in their gorgeous robes and terrifying armor, brandishing steel swords that could cleave a body at a blow or slice a floating, gossamer piece of silk, pranced and bragged before the impassive, stolid ranks of a disciplined, uniformed peasant army equipped with muskets. And when the smoke cleared, the flower of Japanese chivalry lay dead" (David S. Landes, "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations, pp.369-70).

Those were samurai against 1878 firearms. Do you think that you, or anyone, could do better today?

I have a fictional charachter that can sort of...his sword is made of liquid metal though, and would more rapidly self repair than take no damage.

And lightsbers run out of power if they hit too many things, and can be shorted out by certain minerals.

We're still talking about this? By the by, a lightsaber would be a pretty cool weapon. I want a Power Pole lightsaber. If you've read Journey to the West, you know what I mean.

Tehe, the only sword that could beat both weapons or ANY weapon for that matter is the word of GOD. Who agrees with me? Anyone?...
