I use the Contemporary English Version (which is a translation, not a paraphrase). It is written to be easily understood (5th grade reading level) and it is beautiful when read aloud. My oldest kids (age 5 and 7) can understand it and my son can help read it. I also love it because I can give it away to people who don't know anything about God and feel confident that they can understand what they are reading. Before using the CEV I used the Revised English Bible (written in British English, instead of American English), which is another Bible that reads well out loud. I still prefer the CEV. I've tried to read The Message for something a little different, but I find it too jarring and weird. The paraphrases of the Psalms are very awkward and unpoetic. And while much of The Message is colloquial, Peterson makes up some unsual religious sounding terms that no one really uses. They make me roll my eyes or laugh (not good laughter). But I love the CEV - I highly recommend it!

We have many Bibles at home. I use the NIV version, but we also have a CEV, KJV, and a NLT Bible.

I don't use an English version - I have both the 1983 standard Afrikaans translation as well as the 1933 original translation. Both are good translations, though I feel that sometimes the 1983 translation has been dumbed down in the Psalms sections (less use of metaphors) while the 1933 version has several words which, in recent years, have become archaic (not to mention mind-numbingly long sentance structures). But these two versions I prefer.

KJV - don't understand. The Message is good but different. My personal preference are the CEV and the NIV.

I usually read the NIV for personal devotions, and use the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) for class.

I also have the King James, New King James, NASB, Good News, and English Standard Versions. This is because I have personally found it helpful to sometimes look up what is written for particular verses in other versions if I have trouble understanding what I read in my NIV (due to my limited knowledge and understanding of things).

I have many Bibles. I like to study different versions than sticking to just one. Often, some translations will often word certain parts in a way that jump out to me more that I may have completely missed in another version.

NIV: This is the one I use the most. At church, and comparason with other versions

NLT: My favorite. Tends to be more clearer and somewhat easier to understand than the NIV.

KJV: I don't really care for this translation, as I'm not much for reading Old English, but it's interesting to study every now and then.

NKJV: Never tried this one, but I am currently interested in it.

The Message: Another favorite; but I would be very loose about calling it an actual Bible.

Amplified: Skimmed through this one, haven't really studied yet. Looks interesting.

NIV all the way. ^_^ Have been using the same one for the last 5-6 years. *huggles Bible* I believe that God's Spirit can use anything to get His point through to you so yeah the version doesn't really matter. I just use what I'm comfortable with. XD

New King James. I can't read the thous and thees and fully understand it sometimes. ^^ And the Bible I have I had for a long time so it feels like it is mine. My dad owns a ton of Bibles in the house though so I can always borrow one of his if I'm feeling free style.

I've heard a lot of you having the problem between reading "you", "thee," "thou," etc. I wanna clear this up real quick. The makers of the KJV were a lot smarter than us gramaticly challenged 21st century Americans are. Every other language on this globe has a difference between you (singular) and you (plural). "You" in Old English is like today saying "Y' all," it's a plural word. Thou and thee are like Spanish "usted" and "tu," they are the singular versions of talking to people.

IMO, us English-speakers are really letting the art of linguistics slide. I know 1337-5|*33l< is fun, but after having to learn some old English for my High School Drama classes, I can tell you that can be just as fun.
