What titles would you use to get others interested in Anime?

Postby rocklobster » Fri Oct 07, 2005 12:13 pm

see topic. Here's what I'd use:
  • .hack//sign--beautiful animation, great music, and a story as addictive as the genre that inspired it.
  • MIllennium Actress--It's a celebration of the joy of life. Plus it's a great love story
  • Spirited Away--hey it won an Oscar.

I was trying to pick the least violent shows around so that those who think anime is all violence and porn would be pleasantly surprised. Okay, so there's a little blood in Spirited Away and Millennium Actress, but that's way less than the titles that give anime such a bad reputation.

Animatrix
Cowboy Bebop
Memories
Akira (so what if it's a little out there, it's still good)

I've always had luck with Cowboy Bebop.

I'd use Millenium Actress for more serious types

I would probably use a Studio Ghibli movie, but it depends on the person and his/her interests.

Cowboy Bebop or a Ghibli movie, methinks. Though .hack//SIGN and Gundam Wing worked on a couple people, too.

Grave of the Fireflies is a stereotype busting anime... It has a great story, it's very serious, and it's clean. That's a great anime to use...

Also, Cowboy Bebop tends to get anime lots of fans, but that's only because it's so Americanized...

If you want someone to have a weird experience I guess Excel saga, the first half of the show anyhow... After that, you can ignore the rest of the eps... Also, when it comes out stateside, you can do "Sexy Commando" hahaha... That can be weirder than excel (I think it's the same team) I haven't seen the whole series (they are only like 10 minutes long, but there are so many of them) so I don't know about content later on, but it's actually surprisingly clean given the title... There are a couple of iffy moments...

Oh, if you want to break even more stereotypes than Fireflies, you can show them Piano... That is, if they like calm dramas.

Well as everyone else has said it does depend on what people like.
For example if they like Star Trek or Star Wars there's always shows
like:
Crest of the Stars
Banner of the Stars
Geneshaft
Gundam Seed
Last Exile. :thumb:
For someone who enjoyed Hercules and Xena recommend:
Inuyasha :thumb:
For those who like their sci fi Westernized:
Trigun
For history buffs:
Rurouni Kenshin
Samurai Champloo(ok neither are really history per se)
For those with loopy senses of humor:
Excel Saga
FLCL
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
Horror fans would enjoy:
Boogiepop Phantom
Betterman(parts at least)
Lain(again partiucliar parts)

It would depend on what I knew about my friend--like if I knew they liked a certain kind of show, then I'd try to find the anime equivalent (i.e. soap opera - sappy shojo title, sports kick - princess nine, etc.) But for general audiences, I'd say Cowboy Bebop hands-down. Kenshin would be another good one, if you could jump straight to the Kyoto arc  , but Bebop has an amazing storyline, some really killer fight scenes, and a fantastic dub that wouldn't scare people off.

Well, I actually did this once. It was with my Dad.
I tried some o' the classics, like Rurouni Kenshin, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and Cowboy Bebop. He thought CB and SA were okay, but nothing really got his attention until FullMetal Alchemist.
He watched the first DVD and got hooked. Almost as hooked on FMA as on Lost. I'm still trying to get him into CB, but it looks like that isn't gonna happen. Oddly enough, my mom likes Cowboy Bebop more than my dad does. So those are probably some good ones to try if you ever need to get your parents into anime.

If they like actiony stuff, I'd say Trigun and/or Naruto. Some Studio Ghibli stuff, I'd say yes, but not to Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke (good movies, but I bit... wierd, sometimes).

If they want something wierd and funny, One Piece could be good, but that one's complicated (either a retarded dub or Japanese only sub).

Cowboy Bebop--the music, the episodic nature and the awesome dub make it easy for first-timers to get a feel for it.

Trigun--action and humor.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC--because it has robots, and for guys, it has Motoko.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust--Just...just look at it. Wow.

I'd have to say

Trigun (also)
Castle In The Sky
Princess Mononoke
Last Exile
Robotech (the books ^_^)
Cowboy Bebop
Now And Then, Here And There (I got two friends of mine who'd never seen anime to watch a few episodes with me and they didn't wait till I could watch it with them again and they watched the whole series without me.)

I've read several of the Robotech novels.I want to see the first series just to see if my imagination of what Minmei is like fits in with the way she was
portrayed in the series. :jump:

Oh, Steamboy was awesome. Probably most Miyazaki or major films. Fruits Basket was a good suggestion too, and Last Exile. Both are pretty easy to follow and have nice animation. Just don't start up something like FLCL. She'll hide under the table for months if you do that. :P

Anything that has a nice setting and can be more believable. Trigun would be good, too. I know alot of people who started liking anime because of Trigun. Just go with her interests and keep that in mind when you're searching.

I'm not the first to say this (and I doubt I'll be the last), but I think Cowboy Bebop is a great start.

After that... depends. If they liked Cowboy Bebop (and they will), they will probably like Trigun.

I started with Samurai X, but I doubt everyone will like it, mainly bacause of the violence.
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith-- that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

She's pretty much the same in the books as in the anime...She's somewhat more childish in the anime though Mitsuki Lover.

One of my friends said that he didn't like anime because of the style of animation, but I convinced him to watch Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. (The line I used was, "It's hilarious! I couldn't imagine anyone not liking it.") As I hoped, he liked the series and perhaps I'll be able to convince him to watch other types of anime in the future. Though, I think the last episode of volume three may have been too over the top for him.

I have a friend who can't stand most anime art and therefore doesn't watch much...But he really likes the art in WHR...I think artistically wise it's a good one to have people ease into anime with.
