Question for Students

For those of you who are students, how much time (on average) do you spend studying? I am mainly curious about other college students, but others are welcome to participate as well.

Yeah, with work and other things going on I never really study as much as I need to. They say students should study like 1hr (or more) for each credit. That's unrealistic. I usually study about.... 3-5hrs (usually 3 ) a week which includes readings but not typing papers. I seem to get okay B's and an A here and there for my classes. Average student.

Well, I'm not a college student, but I am in my last year of high school...I spend 3 to 4 hours a day studying. Most of it is for my regular classes, and a bit of it is spent studying for Japanese classes that I take at night. ^^;;; I guess you could call me a bit of an overachiever... (I'm desperately finishing up studying for Japanese as I type this)

Other than ititial reading assignments and class lectures, I can't study. Literally. I freak myself out when I study, and end up misunderstanding concepts I previously understood. Last year, I studied for one test, and flunked it, then didn't study for the others and ended up getting all A's and high B's on them. But initial reading homework usually takes up about 5+ hours a week for me.

Last year. . . probably 16 hours a week. It's too early this year to tell what it's going to be like consitantly. Hopefully not as bad as last year.

4-6 hours a day. When i did CS programming, when i wasnt sleeping[optional],eating, or in class i was programming. SO about 9 hours a day then. I would go in at 630 am then stay till 1030, after class from 4 till 930pm. Home and then again... weekends i was there 12 hours sometimes .... yeah.

Well when I was in school (I am on a break till I can pay to go back) I mostly did the fly by the seat of your pants method in other words "study? what is the meening of this word?" the only time I did anything like that was when i needed refrences for papers.

the last 2 yrs. (im now a junior in high school) i was like that, now maybe half an hr a day (if that). i do the rest during school.

haha ya actualy the most studying I ever did was during my senior year in highschool for a comparitive reaserch paper on us and Australian fedral firearms law it was a project that took me longer than it should but I think i got most of the reaserch done in a month of working about 2 hours a day during the school week and then after loosing the websites that I had gotten the info from a night of frenzyed searching. But ya if any ones intrested i am thinking on publishing on the web well makeing a informitive website since the ATF is really bad at giving information.



O ya its not really how long you study its how productive you are so even if you dont study as long as you think you should be just remeber its quality over quanity.

I generally make myself study for a certain amount of time a day, but I often go beyond it. I usually get quite a bit done in one week.

My study pattern was:

5 mins pray
30 mins revise
30 mins fun time.

rinse and repeat.

my marks averaged in the 60s/70s. 40% pass rate...

It is a near certainty that you have heard this, but the general rule is that you should study twice your class time.

I find that my ratio isn't quite 1:1, though that increases with examinations or larger papers. So far this seems sufficient, though I do not have all my grades in full. I feel I need study less largely because I read somewhat quickly.

I work full-time and study part-time. I do around 3 hours of study (well it's really doing my assessments) each night, for five nights. So around 15 hours a week.

If I take more than one subject I am dead.

Languages (computer and human) were really the only things that I had to spend any effort on, and even my time there seemed more productive for me than the same time would be for other students.

If I keep that in mind and study then good grades will most assuredly roll in. sometimes I do terribley on tests and stuff but I still do my best considering I don't want to be stuck in a corner later on. I have to go to a University that has Japanese for a studying language, the only languages I want to learn are:
(1)Japanese (first language)
(2)Chinese (I love oriental langauges and Chinese has really caught my eye for the last couple of years.)
Yes, I know, it will be extremely hard to study all the time and go to exam this and exam that but I'm willing to do it for future results.

There is a slight discrepency here in definitions of "studying." When I heard the amount of studying college students claimed to do, I assumed, like you seem to, that study meant actively reviewing material for an exam, and I found that almost incredible. However, I have found that most people operate with a definition closer to "doing work that in some way relates to a class." Thus, all time spent writing papers or reading is considered study.

Also, purely out of curiosity, what level of school do you refer to?

I don't know, as much as I need to minus a little at the beginning of finals week. I usually study while I read, except I still need to go back and make note cards for my accounting class. (Wish me luck, I have a test on Tuesday.) Between studying and homework, I figure I have about 6-7.5 hours a week. It also varies with my schedule. If I have a test and a paper in the same week, it could be more. I think I had about 10 this last week, but it would have been more if one of my tests wasn't delayed. (Our replacement accounting prof didn't quite make it. I like the new one we got on Thursday. That might make accounting homework more doable on my own and take fewer hours.) If I have neither a test nor a paper, then maybe less.

Well, I'm just a lowly highschool student but last year I would put in at least nine hours a week. One week I remember in particular I put in 12 hours in ONE DAY! I studied from two in the afternoon until two in the morning. . . that was a tough day. . . *stares blankly with mouth agape merely recalling the horror of that thursday*
