It's fat free!

Postby Mr. SmartyPants » Sat Sep 17, 2005 10:19 am

So here I am... eating some popcorn that is "94% fat free!" and such

but it tastes the same....

I know there is a hidden marketing trick to this! Anybody know what it is? Did they put in some secret food additive or something?

Ive heard that if it says "sugar free" then add in more fat, because fat and sugar are what make foods taste better... or something

I look at it this way:

We're all going to die sometime or another, that's just a fact of life. If I'm going to go, I'm going to go happy and full, so I say bring on the fat! What don't kill ya make ya stronger!

Of course, I have the metabolism of a hyperactive bunny rabbit, and I only weigh 180 pounds but still!

It's a well-known fact that when a product is labelled "fat free", it means that they throw the fat in and don't charge extra for it. ;)

It depends. Sometimes they just add more sugar, so it's not really lower in calories or anything.

It's a fad that people haven't gotten over in labelling products, even though new studies are showing that low-fat diets aren't as great as everyone thought. :eyeroll:

its like that new whole wheat bread that is supposed to look and taste like regular ol' white bread. but think about it. this probably costs more to make it this way and how can you REALLY tell if its actually whole wheat if it looks and tastes just like regular bread!? im convinced they're only packaging regular bread with "whole wheat white bread" labels and charging the customer more for it. *is being paranoid* but how do you really know?

94% fat free means 6% fat. So it's not really without fat, now, is it?

They just inverted the labelling to say how much of it isn't fat.

i think you live life once....

if you really like a really awsome chocolate bar or Ben and Jerry's. Dont do it all the time, but live life and eat that chuncky monkey.

I think of it this way... God made sugar and certain fats naturally in foods. When you start altering it ie diet soda and diet foods...unknown side affects, in the long run i think God knows best. So "do everything in moderation", and enjoy life!!!

Popcorn is a low-fat food, anyway, unless you add real butter. My guess is they didn't or they added a low-fat butter substitute.

You could check the carbs in it and compare it to "normal" popcorn. That would tell you if they added sugar to compensate for removing fat, but with popcorn it's hard to say.

Did you read the ingredient statement? It's most likely that the fat source was truly reduced and butter flavors were added to the product to make up for the taste.

"Sugar free" most likely means that a sugar substitute was used such as sucralose. Fat doesn't make up for the sugar but it generally tends to be an accompaniment in the whole product.

Foods with fat taste better because fat generally carries flavor compounds more effectively than water.

Also, a lot of the "low fat" savoury snacks, and in particular low fat popcorn, try to make up for it by adding salt (just like the "low fat" sweet snacks do so with sugar as others have said).

Out of context, the verse is referring to sexual immorality, not food, tobacco, alcohol, tattoos, or anything else you want to apply it to that doesn't relate to sex.

I think it can still relate though. Why should we allow ourselves to get fat and/or unfit (you can be skinny and yet extremely unfit remember... It's not all about losing weight!) and have health problems as a result of poor eating? God gave us these temporary houses... we should take care of them!

that goes more with the verse... nothing in excess and everything in moderation.

God is totally awesome, completely and utterly magnificent. He deserves a huge temple to show that He rocks...so if our bodies are a temple, the fatter we are, the bigger His temple.

I hope everyone realizes that I'm joking there. >.>;;

Except for the part about God being awesome. That's true.

QUICK EDIT: Not that I disagree with you, Tal, I think we should take care of our bodies, that is a good thing...just that the verse in question is referring exclusively to sexual immorality. Quoting verses out of context can prove to be a very dangerous thing...but that's a subject for T-web, I guess.

advertisement say 94% free. so, there is 6% fat.
what they don't say is how much this 6% fat is.
