When do you know to stop?

Postby ~Natsumi Lam~ » Thu Sep 15, 2005 8:45 pm

When do you know when your fast is over?

I have no problem starting a fast...i just dont know when to end it?

Because it is hard to know when to stop when you cant see any progress in what you are fasting for.

Got any ideas.. need help... haha and i want my chocolate.

I always decide in advance how long the fast is going to be; this is particularly important if it is a "not eating" fast rather than simply giving up a specific food or habit. I can see how it would be difficult to know how to stop if you had no set time period in mind, but I don't really know what I would do in your situation, since mine have always had a set beginning and end.
Let others believe in the God who brings men to trial and judges them. I shall cling to the God who resurrects the dead.

fasting for over 2 weeks is very dangerous. After that point, your body gives up on wanting food, and reintroducing it to the body is dangerous without professional medical assistance.

yes, by all means be careful! God wouldnt want you to damage your health. Better to stop fasting too soon than to fast a little too long.

If you are thinking more about chocolate than you are about the reason your fasting, then it's time to stop. Fasting is done with the intention of directing one's total focus upon God.

just remember when Jesus was in the desert it says, " and he was hungry".

Also, if giving up something for fasting were so easy/// ie me giving up broccolli... I would have no trouble, of course i want chocolate ... haha thats what i am fasting from.

However, Jesus did not allow his hunger to overcome His focus and consentration on God. The first thing Satan tempted Him with was physical nurishment, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus reply, " It is written: ' Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 4:3-4)

Matthew provided the commentary that Jesus was hungry not to indicate the Lord's thoughts were focused on food, but to indicate the direction Satan would begin taking in his temptation of Christ.

Jesus' true focus is seen in His reply. It was, of course, on God.

Fasting is not done for the sense of denial. If it were then the focus would be upon ourselves. Fasting is done for cleansing and recognition of dependence and thus the focus is upon God.

if you pass out or go into a coma, it's usually a good time to stop...

I would stop fasting when I get my answer from God or Him uplifting me to the right stage I want to be in. Fasting is something God allows us to do, it is a very Strong weapon to use against Satan because you are going to the extreme to seek refuge and annointing in God. Yeshua will not let you starve to death. When my mom was fasting she had bread and water, nothing more. My dad only drank water which is the way your supposed to do it but if you have blood pressure problems please do eat bread. Eventually you will have to eat something but if you aren't hearing the answer by then it is quite possible God is trying to tell you but your not listening. I'll pray for you, I'm sure the Lord will give you your answer before long.

This is so funny to me that other people do this too! I mean I always thought I was weird. My fasts are usually shorter, though. I've always believed that its not how long that you fast for, but the act of focusing totally on God that matters. It seems like it's symbolic of making God your "Bread of life" for the fast. After all, if you're passed out from malnutrition, you're probably not going to be able to focus on prayer and meditation!

I would wait for an answer from God. I'm sure he won't keep His children waiting.

I tend to fast for specific time periods... usually Lent, not because I'm in a denomination that supports it but that I find it the best time for me to fast from somthing. I would suggest a time limit on a fast though, it helps keep you concentrated to know the amount of time.
