Naruto premier DUB

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

Let's see...I haven't seen the original Japanese version (other than the movie), so I can't compare the dub to the original. So here are my thoughts:

Naruto's voice was horrible. Not a good voice at ALL for the character, I really think there are a lot of voice actors out there who could do much better than this woman (and it's obvious it's a woman). Though, I have hope...remember, the original English voice of Sailor Moon was only for eight episodes before it was changed.

The other voices weren't bad...I don't really remember Sakura's or Sasuke's that well, but then again, she wasn't very prominent in these episodes.

The lack of nosebleeds...that was weird. wasn't aware that there WERE supposed to be nosebleeds in those scenes, and wondered why these people were flying through the air for what seemed like no reason. XD Now that I know the reason, this particular edit strikes me as really stupid, they could've done that a bit better (toned down the blood, but not gotten rid of it entirely, maybe).

The second episode was obviously a filler episode, and I was more disappointed in the content of the episode itself rather than particular voices or anything like that.

All in all, this was not the worst dub I've ever seen, but it certainly has plenty of room for improvement.

I weep internally at the thought of what they'll end up doing to Gaara and Rock Lee. Three and a half thumbs down. Where's the intensity? Where's the emotion? Oh there it is... buried under the banal, cliche'd, vapid pile of kids' show propaganda and intellectually diminished dialogue.
Those who have yet to see Naruto, I only have 2 words for you- "Fan", "sub".
Save yourselves from the mediocre.

I simply don't understand how you could call it that. How in the heck is it propaganda? And "intellectually diminished dialogue"? I've already stated that this is pretty much a word for word translation. Your fansub is the true travesty. I'll never understand people's commitment to fansubs. I'd think that, after so many instances of fansubbers inserting F-bombs into animes, otakus might start to consider that they may not exactly be getting accurate translations.

Heck, things have actually been fixed for the dub version. Do you remember seeing the log by Iruka after he transforms back into himself? That wasn't in the Japanese version. They had mistakenly left it out(it's there in the manga from what I hear). The only reason Viz didn't get the original opening and closing was because of licensing issues. Not because they didn't want it.

You don't like the dub VAs? Fine, that's a legitimate complaint. As is not liking that the intro and outro are different. But to say it's utterly horrible because it's not exactly like your fansub seems very....wrong.

Viz tried their darnedest to give us as well translated a version as possible. They wanted to get even the diehard otakus because they want the show to be as big a success as it could be. They should be applauded.

Oh, and get this. Viz has stated that Shogkugan, Shueisha, and Studio Pierrot have to approve all edits made. That means that they were okay with this.

ya know...ashfire is right...to bad they didn't give it to adult swim.

Adult Swim is for shows that pander to a more adult audience. It's not for airing Japanese kid shows(let's face it, that's what Naruto is; an anime aimed at kids) and it's not meant to air popular anime uncut. Inuyasha has far more adult content than Naruto has displayed so far and it's still debated whether or not it should have been edited for Toonami. Though it would have been the optimal place for it, Naruto would not have fit on Adult Swim.

I'm not terribly impressed with the voice actors, but I should be clear: I think they have room for improvement, not that I feel the actors were poorly chosen. The voices more or less matched the characters, or at least as well as I felt the Japanese voice actors did (of course, that's given my limited understanding of Japanese). My only real pet peeve is that it was terribly obvious that Naruto's voice actor was female. As I didn't watch all of episode two, I'm not sure how much graphical editing there really was.

You see, now these are legitimate complaints and worries. As for the graphical editing of episode 2, UC Pseudonym, the only thing edited was the nosebleeds. The Sexy no jutsu was left completely intact, no digital bikinis or added clouds. In fact, that was part of the deal Viz had to make with the shows creators. Either they leave the Sexy no Jutsu completely intact, or they don't get the rights to the show.

Pics of edits from the first episode can be found here(look for a post by Riza Hawkeye): http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=149684&page=9

Pics of edits from the second episode can be found here(by the same poster): http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=149686&page=3

Oh and who does hinata so far she has the best VA for the one line she does.

Her name is Stephanie Sheh. I've never heard of her, but I do think she did a good cute/shy voice.

Mr. Raven, and all others who unfortunately read my previous comment in this thread,
Please accept my most profound apologies for responding in such a flame-worthy manor. Quite alot of people like how Viz handled the dub, and I, for one, should allow more of their work to be viewed before rendering such harsh judgements.
Viz has, for the most part, impressed me in the past with some of their work, albeit taking some liberties with dialogue and such (i.e. Kuno in Ranma), but nonetheless, their efforts are indeed admirable, as Mr. Raven pointed out.
In addition, some valid points about fansubs have been made (especially in reference to the f-bombs). But having been blessed with good, clean fansubs of this particular show and others, I was apparently looking at my collections of non-licensed and fan-produced subtitled anime through rose-colored glasses. Not all dubs are good, or acurate, granted, and most fansubs are generally wrong, as well.
I wasn't intending to say that any version of the show that comes out that does not match up with my little fansub was inferior, and I am sorry if it sounded that way. Amazing how one can get so involved in something temporal...
In any case, Mr. Raven, point taken, and I thank you for putting me in my place on this issue. Perhaps you're right, and this should be viewed with eyes open wider than I've had.

It's cool, man. I will say that the worries you had for the dub are well founded. Viz has screwed up in the past(which is why I think they should be praised for staying close to the original now). I myself was very worried for the dub when I found out that one of the guys working on it was the same person behind the Rave Master dub(which was horribly butchered dialogue wise).

Hey, what's the worst that could happen? Konoha headbands in Hot Topic? I'm there for that (as long as they have black...)

Now that would be pretty nifty.

Look at the scene right when Iruka turns back to normal. It's not there is it(I can't really check)? It is there a scene later, though. It was an animation error from what I hear.

Haven't seen the Naruto dub yet, but I would probably agree with Chosen Raven and UC about it.

Anyways...

I'm not an expert on licensing and royalties but I would imagine that the original openings/endings would be on the uncut DVDs.

I myself was very worried for the dub when I found out that one of the guys working on it was the same person behind the Rave Master dub(which was horribly butchered dialogue wise).

Yeah, but Rave Master was Tokyopop. Although I like their manga department, their anime department has never impressed me.

Ditto.
The Adult Swim executives have stated that their bloc is mostly for more mature shows geared towards older teens/adults, like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, not for Naruto-ish shonen series.
Yu Yu Hakusho and Detective Conan/Case Closed were not very successful on Adult Swim.
Although it is one of their most popular shows, Inuyasha is an exception not a rule.

Because I never seen Naruto before after Saturday, I really don't have a refrence to compare it to, but from what I seen, it really doesn't live up to the expectations and the hype that I've seen/heard. Naruto would have been better placed on the Adult Swim time block if the animators felt it was so bloody it had to be cut.

The voice actors are...meh. I would have much prefered to have Joshua Seth (The voice of Tai, Cyborg 009, etc...) as Naruto. The current voice is cool, but it's not GREAT...Josh Seth can really bring home the pre-teen voice.

Overall, Naruto is a good anime to watch, but I wouldn't wanna add it to my favorites list.

I dunno. For Naruto's voice, I woulnd't want it to be as high as the American or Japanese VA. Rather, somethign a bit lower, but still sort of cracking.

I agree. The element is there, and it is extremely weird without the nosebleeds (I saw some of the second episode, just not all of it).

The incident was in the manga and not terribly out of place there, I feel. However, the anime version was inflated so that it would take an entire episode. Most likely they did that so the third episode would be more "whole" (you'll see what I mean later), but it wasn't that great of an episode.

Thank you for being responsible, Nu-En-Jin.

It has been a long time indeed since I saw the subbed first episode, but I do remember thinking that I hadn't seen the log the first time around.

One comment I neglected to mention in my first post: the openings and closings. I am glad to have the explanation of trouble regarding rights to them, and that is acceptable to me. It was still bizarre seeing a frankenopening. Actually, I think it was about as good as the original first opening (which I never thought was that good), but I hope their second opening is better.

I would have a hard time taking Naruto seriously if Joshua Seth did his voice....defiently if he used his voice used for Millions Knives from Trigun or Dior Eracles from Last Exile.

I just won't be able to hear Naruto without thinking "But Immelman is Immelman!"

Ahhh this is so sad T___T I'm not interested enough in the show to buy the dvds because I don't really like the animation style (the manga's good enough for me). But even though I've never seen the sub I don't like the dub. The teacher has like NO emotion and Naruto voice is just... off somehow. I've decided not to d/l lisenced anime anymore, so its a lose-lose situation for me. I don't like the editted dub, I don't like the show enough to shell out thousands of dollars to buy all the dvds, and I don't want to steal. GRAH... this is annoying. *sigh* I guess I'll just suffer the dub now *goes off to pout*

I watched both of the eps., but since I've never seen the subs, the only thing I have to compare it to is the manga. I didn't think it was bad, but I prefer the manga. Naruto's voice didn't really fit with my image of him, but that's not really important.

What!? The second episode may not be entirely all that exciting, but it is by no means a "filler."

This Episode establishes not only the relationship with Konohon... 'Honored Granson', it also demonstrates Narutos understanding that his Quest for Hokageness will not be easy. And further demonstrates Narutos uncanny ability to profoundly impact the lives of those around him. Even if for only a short encounter.

Not to mention introducing Ebisu... Er.... Esibu.... Eh .... "Closet Pervert." Who later reapears in the story (and wouldnt have an introduction if not for this episode).

So while you may not realize it while initially watching the episode, Ep. 2 has many important elements that will be built upon later... Now if you want a real example of a filler episode, watch one of the JumpFest episodes...
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.

I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

The only voice that I didn't like that much was Naruto's. I also really, really wanted to hear "Wind" at the end, but I suppose that the show is good otherwise. I just hope that the Haku arc is handled well.

I thought (with the exception of Naruto's voice) this dub was exsquisite!!!
As for adult material and violence a surprising amount was kept in. (The show was given a tv-pg rating)
The only worry i have now is Sasuke's voice ... we'll see tommorow!
The loving, caring, and slightly bad-influencing father of 1balloonpopper and khakibluesocks!!!

I'm sure plenty of people have defended the dub against your grievances but i'm gonna toss my two cents in here..... I love the dub. Quite honestly. I'm a subbie for most things and I usually wind up liking the dub better than the originial Japanese in most cases. Naruto is an exception. It is the ONLY series I have allowed myself to be a complete dubbie for. And I'm glad. I LOVE the dub. I saw episodes one and thirty-eight of the sub and, honestly, not a big fan. I loved Maile and I loved the Iruka VA. Good dub.

I must say I am liking the dub now. Sasuke's voice is very fitting of him. He does a very good job with Sasuke. I am very impressed. Sakura's is so-so. I expected it to be more lighter but it's ok. Ino is freakin sweet. Totally fits her. Shikamaru's is decent but no exactly good but should get better later on n the series. I just heard Hinata's and that works well with her alot. Choji's is annoying but fits him.

Perhaps the most best va I have heard to date is Kakashi's. He did a great job with Kakashi (from what I have heard of it). We also hear the one Juunin girl ninja and she was ok...sorry I forget her name.

Can't wait to hear more of Kakashi ::goes back to watching::

Edits: After finishing the episode, I have high hopes for the series. It is looking very good...and I am getting used to Naruto's VA. "AM I GOING TO SPEND MY ENTIRE LIFE ON THE POT!!!??" I couldnt help but laugh.

Yeah, actually, I didn't think Naruto's voice was so annoying this episode. Weird.

Sasuke had a good voice, as did Kakashi.

However, I REALLY don't like Sakura's voice. :\

This anime is so funny! Yeah, I think Naruto sounds like a little kid though. And yet he and the pink haired chick are supposed to be in a love triangle with sasuke right? ANNOYING! anyway, someone should do a Naruto RPG! let me know if they do.

Ok, Time to throe in my two cents. The only anime sub I`ve ever seen is Dragonball and DragonBall Z. I have to say Naruto is a great anime show and the best dub I`ve ever seen since i haven`t seen any dubs outside DBZ.

Naruto`s voice actually fits him perfectly. If he`s annoying child an annoying child works but IMO it`s twice as good as Luffy`s dub voice in One Piece.
Here`s an idea, dub-makers: Use a boy to do a boys voice.

A woman played Kid Goku, Gohan, and Goten which all sound just like Naruto IMO.

Sasuke is my favorite character, but I like Naruto just as much. You sort of want Naruto to be accepted more than Sasuke, or at least that`s how I feel.

What`s up with that girl that likes naruto? Does she appear alot in the series?

Toonami has had blood. Think DBZ uncut on the episode Raditz died...uh, for Toonami that was a bloodfest. And you saw Blood coming out that Sensei guy`s mouth when the star hit his back.

I didn't see the third episode, but I'm glad to here that people felt the voices were well done.

Do you mean a consule game or an rpg here on CAA? If the former, you are currently out of luck, but such has existed for the latter. It is currently stalled.

Hyuga Hinata. She's a fairly minor character but isn't without a role to play. You won't be seeing her again for a quite a few episodes, however (unless she is shown once or twice in one of the next few episodes).

I don't think anyone was saying that Toonami cut out all blood, merely that they lessened it in a number of shots. They did remove all the blood from the nosebleeds, which may be what you read. As an aside on that subject, the thought occured to me recently that people going flying backward into the air really makes about as much sense as massive nosebleeds.

Yeah, I meant here on CAA. I forgot that there are video game rpgs as well. I hope the CAA rpg continues soon. That'd be cool! But, if not, there are always books to read...
Anyway, thanks!

Naruto seems to be doing quite well ratings wise. Its 9:00 pm central airing was CNs highest rated show of the week.

If anyone's interested in what was edited, there was the scene where Naruto and Sasuke accidentally kissed and the scene where Naruto is sitting on the toilet wiping his bum. I don't mind that last edit at all, personally. The other scene wouldn't have bothered me because it was simply for comedic purposes.

I thought Sakura's voice was pretty good. I don't suppose anybody could tell me what's written on Sakura's alter ego's forehead?

I'm really enjoying this series so far. The only thing that could use some work are the fights. But I hear those get better later on.
