Question regarding Cowboy Bebop

Postby MourningCloak » Mon Sep 05, 2005 4:23 pm

Hello! I just had a quick question to ask, and since I couldn't find any old threads that relate very strongly to my question, I thought I'd just start a new thread... I have some friends who are very into Cowboy Bebop, and they loaned me the entire DVD set. I liked some of it very much, but I found several episodes that were just way out there... Like "Jupiter Jazz," for example. I'm pretty intolerant of anything that indecent, and so I was wondering if anyone could tell me which episodes are good and which to avoid, so I don't have to give up on the series entirely. Any reccomendations are appreciated!

"Jupiter Jazz" though one o fmy favs, is a good one to avoid if you're pretty intolerant of that. Other then that the series is pretty solid with the rest of it. Now nudity or extreme graphic violence. Pierre Le Fou (Session #20) though get's very freaky and violent so if you don't like that either. Brain Scarcth (Session #23) deals with a cult though not hardly considered blasphemus or anything.

So I've encountered the worst in the series, then? That's a relief! I've had a hard time finding anything completely clean that I can get into- though some friends of mine have been recommending "Kenshin" (Am I spelling that right?) and "Fruits Basket." Any thoughts on those?

Yes, you've hit the worst of it in Cowboy Bebop. I think there is an episode later where someone gets knifed, and you see some blood floating around (they are in space) but it's pretty quickly. And you've probably seen the very worst of Faye's wardrobe, too.

As for Fruits Basket, there are two things I can think of. 1, the concept of the story revolves around the fact that the Sohma family members are cursed--they turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when hugged by a member of the opposite sex. When they turn back, they're naked, however it is NEVER shown. Usually a cloud and their shoulders/head/back. Also, Kyo has a bit of a dirty mouth, so he tends to let fly more than a few cuss words. I would sincerely recommend it though; it's easily one of, if not the, definitive shojo series ever.

Mourning Cloak, I HIGHLY and I can't strain enough the word HIGHLY suggest Last Exile. Hardly now fan service save for like...40 seconds of it later on in the series, not exactly gory or violent, and hardly any language save for some spots.

I HIGHLY suggest it that would fit your views on content.

Wow, this is great! I haven't been getting anywhere with finding good anime or manga till now. But a quick, probably stupid question- what do you mean by "fan service?"

Since you are watching Cowboy Bebop, Faye valentine in a Bath Robe would be considered fan service. Stuff that pleases the fans.

I however lump stuff like explosion, character deaths, cool animated sequences, fighting battles, etc with fan service cause they do to please fans. But for th emost part, "fan service" usually translates to "perverted and sexually content".

Ah, I see. Makes sense. So what sort of plot does Last Exile have? I hope you don't mind me asking so many questions, but I'm still fairly anime-ignorant at this point. I just got into it since I love drawing and I was really attracted to the style.

I agree with Mitsuki Lover, those 3 episodes are just hilarious.

MourningCloak, here's thier website.

Last Exile

The animation is bueaitful, fun and simple storyline, and great character with very well known voice actors (two are from Cowboy Bebop  )

On a slightly different note;

What did Maoi (the head of Spikes former syndicate) do for Spike and Vicious, do you ever find out? Because in session 5, jet says something like "so you're...." in relation to maois death and spike going after vicious.

Can someone clear that up for me? Cheers

And Jupiter Jazz was the one with the guy with you-know-what right?

I don't even remember anything way indecent about Bebop and I have seen the whole series, the only eps I can say I really disapprove of are for religious content, being: Session #21: Boogie Woogie Feng Shui, and Session #23: Brain Scratch

I would also personally not reccomend the Bebop Movie, it had some religious content I didn't enjoy, and they came very close to exposing Faye at one point...

Speaking of funny episodes, don't forget Cowboy Funk- or whichever one has Sheriff Andy in it. Oh gosh, that was the best one I remember... I did like the refridgerator one, though.

Hmmm, Brain Scratch? I may have watched that one- was it the one where the video game is killing people?
I think he just meant that Vicious was going to take over the Syndicate. If you'll remember, Maoi wanted Spike to take it over.
That's what I thought too, since I'm also such a Bebop and Ghost In The Shell fan!

Oh, okay.. I thought that he was like his uncle or perhaps had saved Spike and Vicious from the slums when they were little.

Cheers Michael.

Hmmm... Do most anime/manga writers tend to leave unanswered questions, or at least ambiguous situations where you don't really ever find out what happened? I've heard several questions regarding Faye's age and the accident she was in, and no one ever seems to come to a definite conclusion. Just a tactic to keep us interested, perhaps?

Absolutley. Because in Japan it runs like a weekly series you have to keep the audience enticied. Like those dodgy soap operas from the US, 'Passions' and 'The Bold and the Bloke' or something.

Plus its interesting isn't it

Well, it certainly leaves me with different feelings than regular books or movies I finish. It's weird when you get to the end of something, and you aren't ever completely satisfied with what you know. I think I like it- but it still leaves me frustrated. Guess that's why so many fans start fanfics.
