Gas Prices?

gas prices are now averaging about 2.82 for the cheap stuff. It's still 2.72 at a few places. And 2.99 at random corners.

Gas princes range from 3.18 to 3.29 around here... But its still cheaper then if my car ran on Gatorade...

it was $2.84 when i gassed up a couple of days ago and hasn't changed since, but when i was in seattle this weekend (luckily not driving, although the three busses in our group gassed up 90 gallons added together at one stop during the trip... made me cringe) it was at least $3.19ish. and i have to drive, since i have heavy/large supplies for classes, that my little arms can't carry across campus. *cries*

I think the stations around my part of SoCal are between $2.99 and $3.17 at the moment. The station I walk down to to get food was $3.05 on Labor Day. I think I'm going to be walking or riding my bike places for a very long time.

Like many others have mentioned, I hope these rising prices makes people pay more attention to public transportation and alternate fuel sources. If I can afford it (I'm not a car person, so bear with my ignorance) I'm probably going to make a hybrid car my first vroom vroom. =/ What people don't realize is that gasoline isn't an easily renewable fuel source - even if we did start getting our oil from other places, how long until we run out and things go back to being bad? I'm not trying to make a political statement or be a tree-hugger or anything here, but speaking from a logical standpoint, one day we ARE going to run out and if people keep depending solely on gas to power their vehicles, then we're going to have some major problems. ^^;

My Mom works in the school system, and she's heard that if gas prices continue to rise, they may have to cut the week down to four days because they only have so much of a gas budget for the buses.

I highly doubt we'd run out of oil, but Hydro cars are much more efficient I hear. And I think people are doing their best, but they're expensive and where are the refill stations? I hear that the Hybrid cars still aren't as good either. Or maybe that's the electric cars.

A guy at work has a wife, and that wife's friend said it would go over 3 dollars a few months ago. <_< The friend's in the oil business somehow. And I know that chain of contacts is a bit long to be considered entirely trustworthy, plus the fact that it's posted on an internet message board... but yeah.

Anyway, I really doubt it's just because of the hurricane.

We learned in economics that another reason behind the steady gas increase is that both China and India are growing and are also becoming heavy consumers of oil. Which will also result in the increase in price.

And although Hybrid cars are okay and all, they are still too expensive for me to afford.

Update wise: Average Gas price is about 2.87 now. Still one place for 2.72

Supply and demand. When the supply for something goes down, and the demand stays the same, the price will go up.

And just so you know, the oil supply for the earth is vastly being depleated. You might be surprised to learn just how SOON that might run out. Then again, there's a new kind of solid pellet hydrogen that's being tested right now as a potential replacement.

Not to mention, diesel cars have horrendous horsepower (my friend had to floor it to go up a not-so-steep hill and only went, at best, 20mph).

Not so with the VW Golf turbo-diesel: 103kW (fairly average), but 320Nm! And uses only 5.7L/100km . I want one.

We need to invest for in oil supplies for the future... bury lots of dead animals and plant material in one place and compact it and accelerate the oil making process.
Sorry, I don't know much about oil production...

Places out here are dropping down to 2.99 from 3.09. Hopefully it will continue, but I just heard this morning that heating gas is expected to shoot up this winter, so gasoline will probably follow suit.

Since alternate car energy has come up, my two bits is, the major issue is that no one wants to invest in all the neccessary infrastructure to establish it. Car makers won't make hydrogen powered cars because no will buy them until there is somewhere to buy fuel, and no one is opening hydrogen filling stations because there are no cars on the roads to buy fuel. (hydrogen is the first example that came to mind). Until someone ponies up the cash, we are stuck.

We've been at a pretty stable $2.99 for days now, so I think the crisis is over (until the next one). They actually started repairing the refineries in LA on Monday, which I'm sure contributed to the stabilaztion of the market.

Still dropping here, thankfully. I saw that it was $2.81 at the Exxon right at work, so there are probably a few local stations that are even cheaper than that.

Gas costs just over $2.40 here. That's almost a whole $1 cheaper than it used to be. Yay.

You believe correctly. Hydrogen is very dangerous, which is why I'm not a big fan of it.

Gas crept down to about 1.92 a while ago, but it's back up to 1.99, and it's over 2 bucks again on the stations I pass on the way to class. So...bleh.

Well, it's dropped to about $2.30 a gal. for the cheap stuff... but when I started this thread last December they were at about $2.99- Sixty cents in like ten months? Took long enough...
