What is it you like drawing?

Talk about anything in here.

Postby soul alive » Tue Sep 06, 2005 4:23 pm

i'm what i would call an obsessive realist. which is why architecture works well for me... XDXD

i like drawing people, and enjoyed the life drawing class i had (which was in high school, so no nude models o_O), i'm slowly developing my own anime drawing style... and i do have to say, having life drawing basics REALLY helps.

i like drawing eyes too... something fascinating about drawing them... hmm.

Personally, nude models aren't all that bad. I took a drawing class at a local college when I was seventeen and I remember totally freaking out about the prospect of having to draw naked people. But the first model was a wiry, thirty-something woman with dimply thighs, wrinkles on her belly and basically, a fit but perfectly average body. There wasn't much sensational about it. I will admit that the first guy model (who was hardly 5 years older than me) was tremendously awkward for the first ten minutes. But you get in the groove and start studying the person in the same way that you'd study a potted plant soon enough. Plus I censored my drawings with shadows.

Oddly enough, my teacher actually advised me to pursue figure drawing O_o

Seriously, I'll draw just about anything that happens to be in front of me (i.e. the car dashboard)

In terms of what I really enjoy drawing, I love drawing portraits and gesture drawings. I especially love drawing weathered old faces and people with interesting facial features.

And I also like architecture, fantasy creatures, digimon, animals, elvish and dwarvish types in overly elaborate dresses and armor, scary muscular hybrid creatures and...stuff.

Landscapes are scary, I salute people who can draw 'em.

It's so cool to see you've got such a variety of things you can draw well. I mean, I think there are a lot of people out there who can draw people but not animals, and (like me), those who can draw animals but not people.
SirThinks2Much wrote:Monsters, characters and outfits for said characters. I'd like to be a character designer for a film or special effects studio one day. *goal in life--work for WETA*

That would be such a cool job!
Talking briefly of Weta, I'm guessing you mean Weta Workshop which did most of the stuff for LotR?

Animals, creatures, and more animals. The odd strange looking animal-plant combination, and the odd plant. As well as that, every so often I attempt people, though I'm definitely stronger in drawing animals. I'm actually pretty good at realism, but need to get back to it; it's been a long time since I've drawn a realistic piece. That's mostly because I spend so much time and detail trying to get it right, whereas when I draw I love just being able to doodle something and have it look semi-right even in its roughest form. Therefore I usually stick to cartoons, though I love realism; especially when trying to draw a completely madeup creature as though it really did exist, with all the shading, the textures, the poses looking real...

I definitely need to work on my landscapes, people, and realism; but I really enjoy drawing cartoon animals.

Oo, I do that alot too! Whenever I'm on the phone or in class or distracted in general, I tend to draw detailed, realistic style eyes without really thinking about it. Which is weird, because the eyes on my characters tend to be quite simplistic and blank looking :eyebrow:

I believe that if an artist can draw one thing really well, it's possible to translate that to other subject (though it can be tricky). After all, drawing is basically the manipulation of lines and shapes...

I sometimes feel that I don't really have an artistic niche, and that there isn't anything that I'm particularly comfortable with drawing, which is the pits. I think that it's nice to have a comfortable, familiar subject to come back to, it's kinda like a 'home base'.

I wanted to comment on what lizard-queen said about drawing naked people. It's not that bad really. Nor do I think it's neccesarilly sinful unless viewed in a lustful way.

It is rather shocking though when the guy/girl just drops his/her robe and is stark naked no matter how many times you do it

I usually tend to do best with imitation--drawing something that is already in front of me. When I draw for pleasure, it is usually either figure drawing or manga-style drawing. I can usually copy anime and manga pictures fairly accurately; designing my own characters, on the other hand, is significantly more difficult.

after the initial shock i could probably handle drawing nude models, i just don't want to. *shrug* just my own choice, and i would in no way get after anyone else for it.

back on subject... i tend to do very realistic art. i've done some abstract stuff, but for me it just doesn't work... i take it to.. realistically or something XD

i also tend to like drawing bare feet anime style... dunno why. i really need to work on my anime hands, though. i tend to use my hands for models... and then i get upset when what i draw looks small and short fingered... even for guys, arg, *rolls eyes*

I love drawing manhwa-style people~ Females are wayyy easier to draw but I won't give up on males or children. At art school I learned how to properly draw realistic humans. I guess I'm okay at it, but I don't practice it to often. I should~ ^^;; heehee

I love drawing anime and manga.
I've come up with a million of my own styles and love just making up totally random characters. I think it's fun to just invent your own style and have fun with it. Then again it's never bad to draw from something you love! ^_^ I personally do it all the time. Most of the time I reflect how I'm feeling when I draw the picture ('m not a "become one with the art" kind of person and do not draw insane pictures about someone I'm mad at) I just enjoy seeing how far my art skills can rise before my hand gets writers cramp. I like drawing InuYasha, and sometimes from a few other anime, nothing special though. To me it doesn't really matter what you draw or what you draw from as long as its spiritually clean.

Drawing made-up creatures is fun; especially when trying to find the fine line between cute and original and so original it looks plain weird and nothing else. Like the difference between a cute blue mouse with spikes down its back and a crocodile with a beak.

I really enjoy drawing fantasy creatures. Dragons, unicorns, pegasi, centaurs, mermaids, and whatever else have no real reference, so I can add scales, horns, fins, etc and all kinds of markings and not have someone tell me it doesn't look like the real thing. :P

I also enjoy the occasional anime-style creature. =)

Real animals make good subjects too.

I'm trying to get better at drawing people but at the moment they look stylized. The outlines are a huge part of that. ^^;

I also don't have any reference for proportions and muscles. I'm not well toned in every area, so i don't see every muscle on myself. <_<

I like drawing with outlines, then shading and texturing realistically. :) I sometimes go back and erase the outlines after, though.

I can do fairly well at landscapes, especially clouds, but they aren't my real point in drawing-- they make up the background, and often a large part of the scene... but they are not my true focus. Landscapes are still very fun to experiment with in various media, though. ^_^

True. I am best at drawing and making a totally new anime character of my own (I've developed several of my own drawing styles as time has gone on) I like drawing both genders, for me females are easier to draw than males, but I am also farely good at drawing males, the biggest detail I think for men is to make muscle definition and broder shoulders, also to make the face more like a man's. (I have messed up on this detail time and time again, its not good when you look at your own artwork and think the boy looks like a girl.) I would like to make up my own design for animals and landscapes because mine right now are bland and boring. The animals I draw are more like real life ones except they keep coming off as balloons or weird cardboard stand-ups and the landscapes are basically fairytale ones with clouds, long grass, trees, bushes and a big blue sky in where I place a few V shaped birds. But I enjoy coming up with characters and deciding names, possible powers, voice, personality favorite things to do. Perhaps I get to interested in my own drawings! ^^;;; But I've become good at it because I am bored 99% of the time unless I'm watching Anime, reading manga, etc.
But its fun to experiment with your drawing skills IMO, and everytime I draw something I try to be proud of it because I know God helped me make it so it comes out so much better than I thought it would normally if I had just tried to perform a solo.

I like drawing comic style superhero-type men and women. I cannot draw manga/anime.

I also like drawing stellar / astronomy art (planets, stars, galaxies, etc.).

I like drawing Transformers a lot too.

I am probably best at drawing Transformers and comic style superhero-type men and women. But my Transformers art is not as good as Don Figueroa's.

I enjoy drawing shonen-styled anime, you know, where the guys have spiky hair with humongous bangs, and cute girls. I also draw mecha and just about anything you'd find in a mecha anime, such as tanks, fighter jets, spaceships, etc. I enjoy drawing these kins of things and would like to make it into a living.
