Would you marry an older person?

Postby Alice » Fri Sep 02, 2005 5:31 pm

Okay, don't take this the wrong way. I'm just curious whether you would consider marrying someone older than you, all other things being equal. (The person was a good match spiritually, etc. etc.)

I'm curious because, although it seems like this happens a lot in Hollywood and rich circles (to the extreme), I wonder if it couldn't happen for the right reasons, too?

Anyway I'm curious what everyone's opinion is about this. :grin: Thanks!

To all those who wonder, I'm not making this thread because I'm thinking of marrying an old guy!!!! :lol:

Why must we be abandoned in times of need?
Do others not see when we yearn for their touch;
An insatiable hunger only they can feed.
Left alone with out their words – fallen into darkness.
Stumbling blindly without their light,
We fall and scream, knowing we've faced too much,
Knowing the only answer is flight.
Flight from the lives we once faced
And the joys and terrors others have brought.
Our time with them, a time of joy and life,
Wonder we all, was it for naught?

For me it depends on how much older. But I know some people who are 18 years apart and they couldn't be happier. So it just depends, as with everything just pray!

Very much depends on how older. My answer could be all three, depending on that. :grin:

But in general, no problemo, provided we're close enough in age. Although...stereotypically, the guy is older. :lol:

Right now I'd probably be comfortable marrying someone who's only a little bit older than me (no more than 3 or 4 years, probably). But if you meet someone who's significantly older, but God wants you to be with them, then I'm not one of judge. ^^

How much older?

At this stage in my life, I think I would, for love, consider somewhat of an age difference. Not a great deal as it would present some difficulties in the elder years. Perhaps 6-7 years age difference?

It really depends on the age difference. If they're 10 + years older than me, I'm not sure I would.

Nahh, I wouldn't marry someone older; my boyfriend's 5 years younger than me :3

(Seriously I would. I do think 5 years is probably the 'acceptable limit' but if God Wills - great or small difference, age doesn't matter [that of course is granted both people are old enough to marry])

I probably wouldn't marry anyone who's more than ten years older than me. Unless of course I really liked this guy and he really liked me, then I probably wouldn't care how old he is. Unless he was under 18 haha.

For myself, the woman I would want to marry would have to be 20 years or younger because I would hope to have children with them. I would say that my life has not been good for me to find a woman with different things that have happened. I don't acourse attend bars or go out at night because of safety reasons or go on websites. Any socializing I have done was though the fire department when I was younger, the anime club I belonged to before it folded and now with anime cons as a staffer or attendee.

Well, I actually know a guy who is ten years older than me and he's like my big brother, we get along so well, and he said were I five to ten years older he would date me (not to me, to someone else, after being asked if there was anybody who was younger that he would date *it wasn't just like some perverted thing he said on his own, lol*) and if I were five years older I'm pretty positive would date him too, but then I thought "Why would I have to be older? People get married at ten years apart all the time." But it still seems just a little weird. Actually, I know two guys like that, lol, so I don't know, I'm weird. If I grew up a little more and decided after I was fully matured that that was something I would still consider, I don't know, I would probably at least date them and see if the age difference ever came to be a problem. I mean, if you meet somebody who you could potentially love enough to spend the rest of your life with, why is age such a big obstacle to overcome?? I mean, I know that it's weird to varying extents depending on the amount of age difference, and I don't know where I'd draw the line. . . probably ten or eleven years at most. But then there was a girl at camp whose parents are happily married at fourteen years apart, so. . . AUGH! It's just too confusing!!! I guess I'll just wait and see if it ever happens to me and decide then! :P

Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!

I can't say I'm terribly picky on the matter. I always thought I wanted a man 2-3 years older than me (since you know, guys mature slower than girls), but my boyfriend is only 3 months older than me, yet he's far more mature than most of the 20 something year old guys I know! I'm not sure I'd consider a younger guy though....I dunno, I'd have to judge it on the person, but the thought just seems jarring to me, personally.

I wouldn't rule someone out for being older, and as time goes on, the year difference doesn't feel so big. Dating-wise, especially in high school and shortly after, I would say an age difference generally has more of an effect on the relationship, but later I would agree that it might be acceptable. It really depends on God's plans, though.

(Basically agreeing with everyone else...)

I think that anyone saying downright " I WOULD NEVER MARRY AN OLDER PERSON" is very hardheaded. I mean, what if you really fall in love with someone and find out if they are older? I also think this question will be more trivial for the guys, because stereotypically, guys are "supposed" to be older than the girls when they get married.

For me, as a guy, i think that i would feel more comfortable with a wife that was younger than i was. That is what i think a lot of guys would say. One thing that you have to take into consideration is, once everyone in a generation exceeds in age, age difference becomes less and less noticeable and important. In school we are generally divided into different ages because of the grade levels. Suddenly, after school ends, these dividers of age groups aren't as readily apparent.

if a woman was 2 years older than me and i really was in love with her and i really felt that God was telling me she was the right one, i WOULD marry her, no question.

I don't really think a thing like age should get in the way of God's plan, or love. That's just stupid.

I woulld if the age difference were not too big. I think 2 or 3 years older would be the limit.

Love isn't limited by age. If its God's will it'll happen. Anyway I don't think any more then 10 years would be how it would be. Me personally I would marry a girl that was older then me but it would probobly be only 2 or 3 years max. But as I said I don't believe love is limited.

Uuuuh, how old are we talking?
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Right... I'm not even going to say anything there.

Anyway my mom is two years older than my dad no big deal there.

I think age is a bigger deal with dating when you're younger I'd say 21 or so and under more than 2 years and the maturity gap is too much. In your mid 20's and beyond I'd say age is not really a factor as much to an obvious degree...

You also have to take into account the context of the times. It's not a "normal" thing anymore for guy's in their 20's marrying 14 year old girl's. And then there's people actually have a choice of who they're going to marry now. Let's be reasonable in most cases anyone that's not within some kind of reasonable age to their partner marriage just probably won't work.
