Unique or Wierd?

Postby Myoti » Fri Aug 19, 2005 7:33 pm

I'm not sure exaclty where to talk about this, but I supposed since it has to do with anime it should go in the Anime Forums (duh!).

I fell kind of wierd sometimes when I talk about anime I like. I mean, I see ALOT of people who are telling their favorites or asking if I've seen stuff like Rouroni Kenshin, Inu Yasha, and Fruits Basket.

Well, I've kinda looked into ones like this, but many times find myself not being very impressed. I'm not saying these are bad shows, by all means now; and odds are I'll probably end up seeing these in the future, but they don't attract me as well as other shows tend to. Animes and manga, some of which many people haven't even heard of.

I mean, just check some of these I like:

-One Piece - Obviously. Alot of people would assosciate this with those other "neverending" series like Inu Yasha and DBZ, but there's just something about it that feels different. Maybe it's just that it tends to feel more fun and light-hearted than those other series. I dunno. :/

-Naruto - Okay, so this one actually is popular...

-Trigun - Also popular.

-FMA - Again, already pretty popular. Read on and you'll find when it gets wierd...

-Ultimate Muscle - Raise your hand if you've heard of it. Now raise your hand if you like it. This show is basically WWF, but a whole lot funnier and wierder...

-Tsubasa - I don't know if this is an anime yet, but I love the manga (or what I've seen of it). It basically mixes several Clamp tales into this sort of alternate universe traveling story. The other side of the story, XXX Holic, is also pretty good, but a bit less actioney...

-Digimon - Most seem to consider this more of a "kiddy" anime, but I still love it with a passion. It's no longer my most favorite, but I still enjoy it.

-Shaman King - The anime, please. The manga is just kinda wierd. O_o

-Final Fantasy Unlimited - Compared to alot of others, it may not seem that great, but it's FINAL FANTASY!!! That, and Kaze rocks.

-Zatch Bell - Um... yeah. Me likey.

-MAR (with a two accent over the 'A' ) - I've seen the manga, and it looks pretty cool. It's like mixing the 'Wizard of Oz', a bunch of fairy tales, and a kid with this wierd, talking weapon together in an alternate world.

-.hack//sign - There's barely any action, so why do I love it so much?! I also kinda like .hack//dusk.

-Et Cetera - Another interesting manga that few seem to have heard of. It's a Western-type story that I found to be pretty cool from what I saw.

So, do I have a pattern of any kind in what I like? Is anyone else out there fond of underrated series?

I'd enjoy everything on that list, save a few (only becuase I haven't seen them yet) and Digimon. I'm looking to buy Et Cetera. Don't bother feeling wierd. One Piece is awsome (only the manga more so for me.)

I've watched ZatchBell, and it is too cliche for me.

I think that Pokemon, Digimon, Shaman King, and Zatchbell can now be put in a subgenre. I would call this subgenre,"Partner" anime and manga, since it all derives the same guy/gal with same powerful creature/supernatural being fighting same evil/ tournaments etc.

oh yeah, and this game:

I'd read Tsubasa, FF Unlimited, and Mar (which I've never heard of but sounds quite interesting from your description, and I loved .hack//legend of the twilight.

I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of in not liking the "mainstream" anime. Heck, until recently most of america had never heard of my favorite author! Be proud that your tastes are so unique, so eclectic, and that you have a lot of fresh, new series to recommend to your friends who have only seen the more mainstream stuff!

Giant Robo-Obvious. Almost unheard of, but 13 years of work and considered a masterpiece by the few that have actually seen it. Brilliant epic drama.

Now and Then, Here and There-More heard of, but still kinda fringe.

Sonic The Movie-Really weird but oddly cool.

Dai-Guard-Nearly unheard of mech-comedy.

Spiral-Remotely known, very interesting mystery/detective series.

SHIN!! Getter Robo Armageddon-Absolutely impossible to take seriously, Go Nagai Getter Robo series.

Tetsujin 28th-Remake of Gigantor by the guy who did Giant Robo.

Master of Mosquiton-6 episode uber-fringe vampire/comedy.

Street Fighter Alpha-Anime based on fighting game...WITH A PLOT.

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture-Okay, it's not that great, but I still like it.

 Same here Ashley.

I definitely don't go for the "mainstream" stuff in the US (tactics is startlingly popular in Japan, though. >.>) and while it can be frustrating I see nothing wrong with it. ^_^ Think outside the box! <3

I guess I fall into your catagory as well. I don't think many fans of mainstream anime know about the gem that is Haibane Renmei, let alone venture beyond what's on television. Though I would imagine liking some of the shows on that list if they had not been as popular as they are now.

Don't feel too out landish. Those shows aren't that unusual or unheard of. I mean, here I am and my two of favorite show are: AIR TV and Honey and Clover. Yeah, let's see a show of hands for those two.

So don't feel odd about not being tje biggest fan of a lot of mainstream anime. Except for Fruits Basket. Feel very, very bad about not liking that one. ;)
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Underrated? Half of the series you listed aren't underrated.

One Piece: Very popular. And, outside of some generally common elements of shonen manga, I don't consider it to be that like DBZ. There isn't any ultra power-leveling or villians that resurrect from a single cell....
It feels far fresher to me than DBZ.

Naruto:What can I say? Join the club.

Trigun: *shrugs* Not my favorite. But I'm fine with it.

FMA: Once again, join the club.

Ultimate Muscle: Uh...er....no real comments.

Tsubasa: I have the first volume. I moderately enjoyed it, but I would have enjoyed it more had I been able to figure out what was going on in most of the "action" panals. I'll probably look into the rest of the volumes later. At any rate, it seems to be quite popular, especially among CLAMP fans. And, yes, there is an anime.

Digimon: Well, it is what I credit for getting me interested in anime. I still enjoy it to an extent...

Shaman King: I prefer the manga to the anime actually. The anime goes off on it's own to 'filler-land' around the trip to America and never quite gets back on track, at least until the end. And the manga has more background information and such on many of the characters. It's more indepth...

Final Fantasy Unlimited: Well, er, I'm a Final Fantasy fan and all but Final Fantasy Unlimited got really bad reviews from most review places...

Konjiki no Gash Bell!/Zatch Bell!: Well, I have enjoyed what I've seen. And, it is extremely popular, but more so in Japan than the US.

MAR: I enjoy it. I read about 8 volumes or so. Start with an RPG-ish quest, throw in lots of fights and random literary references, and you will basically have MAR. It turns into a fighting tournament series after about 3 volumes. But Nobuyuki Anzai is quite good at doing tournaments so I'm not really complaining.

.hack//SIGN: It's alright. I prefer .hack//DUSK however.

Et Cetera: It seemed decent from the little I saw of it.

Both .hack//sign and .hack//legend are on my personal favorites list
although in the second ten and not the top ten, still they're favorites. :thumb:
Too bad the Evil Minions Who Work For CN and AS in particuliarly haven't
shown .hack//sign in ages. :shady:
I think though that .hack//legend might be a bit underrated because it's
done in a different style from the other one and is more light hearted.

One show that I do have on my top ten list that I don't know if it fits here or not is Boogeipop Phantom. For some reason I really like this series, even
though it does get a bit creepy and eerie at times.Nagi's completely cool
and it's hard to believe that she's voiced in the dub by Rachel Lillis who is
better known for doing Misty and Jessie on Pokemon! :thumb:

Then again I also like Betterman. And I do know that there are a lot of
people here who probably don't like Betterman. One of the reasons I like
Betterman is Hinoki's freaky rainbow hair color. But I also love the
combination of terror and humor.
The one with Keita and Hinoki in the maze is especially good, and don't
get me started with the WORMS episode!

But I'm glad to find some else knows about these. I didn't realize that MAR was that far along already, though.

On FFU, yeah it's not the best, but if you like FF it seems pretty good.

They have only released around two volumes in English currently, I believe.

In Japan, it's up to the 10th or 11th volume or so. But, yeah, it's a pretty fun series. All the literary references and gags are amusing. A witch named Dorothy who can summon a monster called Toto... A farmer named Jack... A princess named Snow... Various villians who look like they were ripped out of different fairy tales...

*shows her hand for Air* O.O I've seen through episode 8, and all I can say so far is WOW. n.n Anyways, back to the topic! XD

I usually don't pick my anime on how popular or unpopular they are...I mean, I usually just choose what attracts my tastes and what. Come on, it's not conforming if it's what I really like! XD A lot of the animes I like are on TV, so they do tend to be more popular, but I don't think the popularity of a certain series should dictate what you watch. Besides, anime in and of itself isn't all that popular, so there's not too much to worry about! XD

Hmm...your list is quite a mix between mainstream and not-so-mainstream stuff. I can't say any of those titles are under-rated. All in all, I wouldn't really worry about that...you like what you like and as a Christian, just be extra careful that your choices do not let anyone else stumble.

Tsubasa, Shaman King, and MAR are titles I do like very much even if they may not be as "popular". Shaman King manga does leave me a little nervous with all the spiritualism symbols and animism but I personally think MAR is fun in its fantasy world (Dorothy rocks).

I've never see hack/sign, Ultimate Muscle and Et. Cetera so I can't really comment on them (am I supposed to? *shrugs*).

The thing about the manga is the way it seemed to me to be a bit more... gruesome sometimes, like the battle against Faust (the guy tore his own broken bone out and had it replaced with a corpse's one!!!). Also, that wierd beaver guy that shows his... yeah, I really like the anime better...

Yes, Dorothy is awesome. And me want some Arms. Those things are just so awesome!

Not that it makes it any less weird or anything, but just so you know there's a cultural reference behind that one. ^^;;;
