To Create or to Experience?

Do you guys (for most of the general things in life) prefer being the person "behind the scenes" or "part of the audience?" For instance, one is amused and entertained by watching movies. Though in reality, those who create the movie do not get the same enjoyment because they spend time working on molding the experience to those watching it. The relationship then is that the audience gets to enjoy the thrill of experiencing a movie while the producers\writers\actors enjoy the thrill of making it. The same goes to the writer and their readers, an artist and their patrons, and a musician and his listeners.

I kind of like being the guy who's part of the audience. Somehow I am easily entertained by being a witness to someone else's imagination rather than my own. At times I like to be working behind the scenes and creating something for people to enjoy, but it's never as fun as experiencing it first hand.

Personally for me, I do both. At times I do prefer being the audience. Other times I prefer being the creator.

That depends upon the setting. For movies, I would much rather experience than create, as most of them require a long and demanding process. However, there are some mediums that I very much enjoy creating (though I also enjoy experiencing other series); there are some stories or scripts I have written with no intention for anyone to every experience, but merely as enjoyable exercises for myself.

In the course of writing that, I have realized that for me the two are not in conflict, hence it is not necessary for me to choose between them.

A very good idea for a thread. Anyways it seems to me that I like to do both. Both offer a different thrill as you put it. Of course behind the scenes is harder and some times frusterating or even grueling. But you can make money off it. Being the audience you only lose money off it. So I would like to be behind the scenes of somthing for my career in life. And for now I can stick in the audience. I do practice being behind the scenes though. Writing, making movies, and music.

I like to create a lot more than experience -but like others have said, when it comes to some things it's the other way around. However, I truly love the creative process -watching projects grow from tiny ideas to the complex finished product really gives a sense of satisfaction when you come to the end of it all. Though somehow the more I learn about the process of creating something, the more critical I become when I'm part of the audience watching someone else's work. o_O Somehow knowing how things are made makes me less impressed when someone uses cheap photoshop filters etc.
Then again, in another way it gives me more appreciation overall because I can grasp a little better the amount of effort that goes into making even the simplest of things.

I like to both read and write, but I find I usually can't do both at the same time. (I mean like in the same day.) At least not if I want to get much of either done...

That part is true. I remember last summer I was a paid extra for a new Mike Judge movie. Being behind the scneces and infront, I saw how much work was involved. The crew were constantly running around and such. Its high demanding indeed.

Then in school I used to be in broadcasting. Messing around with the cameras, AV/Sound Mixer and such was really fun.

But I dunno know. For me it just really depends... Probably experience. Though creating has it's own rewards.

Lucky! You'd have to give us a scoop on the movie or tell us which frame you were in when we see it.

But yeah, I feel that creating something requires us to "phase-out" of the fantasy aspect (which the audience will experience) and have to work with reality (building the project). It seems also that whenever someone works on something and he or she looks at the end-result, it's never the same compared to the audience's perspective. I guess it's because one knows too much about their own work that they would still be critical about how it turned out, thus never enjoy the results as much themselves.

I'm not very creative. I'm overly self-critical of anything I do manage to create. I'm slow in carrying out tasks.

Experiencing and appreciating what others make is often more satisfying. I have insight into how a lot of drawings are made because I have experience with it, so it makes it more fun to just focus on the details.


Though, drawing things that turn out fairly well and other people enjoy is a neat feeling as well.

Usually I lean more towards the creative side, but only in certain things. Example, I write a LOT more than I read. Usually I'm too busy tapping on my keyboard or drawing or browsing CAA to do much reading. I love drawing and photography as well, however I also have a deep appreciation for art and I love looking at other people's art - especially photography. ^^

I pretty much enjoy both. Experiencing things helps give me ideas for the things where I'm behind the scenes.

it depends on the form for me, i tend to like to experience things, like i know exactly why i like something, but put it in front of me and go ok create this.. and i don't do well really, though it depends, with some stuff, i can be kinda creative or at least helping behind the scenes, being an audio techie, i can do stuff like that, engineering for stuff, but try getting me to create say a song and i couldn't. i like both, and even when your behind the scenes your still kinda experienceing something, maybe a different side of it tahtn others but i find teh different experience kinda enjoyable in it s own way, if ya know what i mean.

Interesting that you should make this thread. I've been doing some thinking about this very subject lately. I haven't yet come to a conclusion. I guess I like to do both.

i love to create, because i can then experience it just how i want it, and my mind is usually overflowing with random ideas for games, stories, etc. (Except for theme parks... RCT kind of got me sick of creating them, although i still love to experience them)

It is truely rewarding to be behind the scenes (I do the artwork on a manga). But it's really difficult to enjoy your own work the way I could some one elses, so I prefer to read other manga for insparation and recharging.
