There was this strong stuff my brother's friend tried once when he was desperate from the pharmacist. It kind of burned the skin, which is just about as bad, though.
My brother also tried strong, minty toothspaste on his acne. He said it worked... but I never tried it.

That baking soda one seems like the best I've heard so far. One I've tried that has worked for me was saline solution. Just put about half a teaspoon in a glass of water, mix it up, and dab it on the irritated skin. It works on a lot of skin irritations, especially infections. You don't want it strong enough to dry out your skin, though. But if you have a really bad bit of acne, you can put a bit of that on it a couple of times daily and see if it clears up within a few days. It worked for me, but Volt's baking soda suggestion seems to be more immediately effective. :)

<<EDIT>> I think that strong stuff from the chemist my brother's friend managed to get was a form of peroxide, but I'm not sure.

I've had acne problems, and I recently went to the doctor for it. They put me on Doxycycline along with a gel of some sort. That, along with washing my face a few times a day and Oxy at night, has pretty much eradicated it.

Just my experience.

I did that too and it worked as long as I kept up with it and about baking soda...blech :P

One can get a perscription for an effective antibiotic called Minocycline, which I've used and is very good. But that's not all that you should do. Creams work well, but aren't really required. What is required is cleaning and exfoliation. This must be done at least twice a day, and it will do more for you than any medication can.

Also, avoid acutane at all costs. One of the side effects of this drug is suicide. Causes manic depression in a large population of its users.

Acutane does not make you any more suicidal than taking anything else. I took it for several months two years ago. The only reason people said that was because a senator's son killed himself 5 or 6 months after he was off Acutane. In other words a load of bull the senator made up because he can't come to grips that his son is dead and he didn't do anything in time to stop it.

I've been using Bactrim once every other day and Tazorac cream at night for about a year. It does a decent job most of the time of keeping it down. Can't stop it all of course but it looks better than before.

One of my doctors told me this: You can't cure it since it's really a hormonal thing. There's nothing you can really do about it except to do your best to keep your skin clean. No diets, no exercise, no super formula...nada.

I tend to believe her because my skin eventually cleared up after I passed a certain phase in my teen life (when my hormones started to stabilize a little more  ). Right now, I still have problems on my chest and back but it's starting to clear up. wOOt!

As for baking soda, I'm not too sure whether I would like to give it a try. It's mostly sodium bicarbonate, which may cause irritation at skin contact. I'll need some time to think about this.

Good griefy, I know it's a joke but for goodness sake, don't go around eating baking soda randomly. It's not like there's nothing else better to eat. heh

Well ja, for girls who have bad acne, they'll break out every time their period rolls around. Impossible to do anything for that.

As for the senator thing, I think that's not the truth. I say so cause my mom's coworker's son had dramatic personality shifts after starting to take it.

Baking soda had been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease, b/c of using it for upset stomaches.

I have been using this product from AVON call Pore-Fection it's a cream clay mask you wash your face with. You don't leave it on. It has done wonders for me...but that's just me.

A 30 second google search could of given you the answer. Try it before you disclaim something I have to say. Anyway It just became a story when some senator grandstands to make up for his own failures as a father. I was on Accutane for 6 months and the worst side effect I can remember was chapped lips. I read the pamphlet, talked to the dermatologist, had the bloodwork etc. Everything that would of happened I knew about and nothing did. I even went on vacation on Lake Michigan for a week wearing no sunscreen and nothing happened to me. It worked too so I'm not complaining and I know it's worked for plenty of other people. And your mom's coworker's son's mood changes could literally be anything. From the way you're referring to him like that I don't think you know him very well so really it could be up in the air. And of course medication is not the only thing that leads to mood changes.

I didn't say it happened in everyone, I'm just speaking from what I know from friends and family. Also, a girl who I went to school with for 13 years started taking it a few years back and sideaffects that she suffered from it were migrane headaches and "feeling down" all the time.

Even my doctor says that though it still hasn't been a 100% confirmed thing, it should be taken into consideration as a risk when people want to start using such a drug. He also says that there are better alternatives than acutane, such as the afore mentioned Tetracicline and other similar drugs. Worst side affect that's advertised for most patients is increased sensitivity to the sun, which means that one shouldn't try to get a full body tan when taking the drug, not that I've ever had any problems with the sun before when using it. Heck, I even overdosed on it once, and the worst that happened to me was a few mild headaches and maybe a few dead liver cells or something... so ja, it's a pretty stable drug.

I heard that about Acutane, my dermatologist was talking about putting me on the stuff if my acne does not lessen after using Bactrim and Tretinoin cream for a while. I've been on both of those (Bactrim twice a day, Tretinoin at night) for about a month (I was on them for four months a year ago and it helped, and then I got off of them and blah. Acne came right back) and I can already see improvement.

Since I have started drinking mostly just bottled spring water (32 bottles for $5 at Sams, btw) and no soda, I have noticed my acne is starting to clear up better than any cream or whatnot that I have tried.

Just thought I would throw that in.
