Hey guys, I was just wondering, do any of you build any model kits? you know, plastic, resin, scratchbuilt, you name it! It seems to be a bit of a dying hobby. ayway, i thought it would be cool to start a thread for people who build models to come talk. I like to build plastic model kits of just about everything, except cars, that is. my favorite things to build are mecha (mostly gundam and Macross) kits. i also enjoy building world war 2-era aircraft. I am currently working on a British Challanger tank, (my first ever armor kit) and haven't yet decided what to build next, maybe another Valkerie( from Macross, I've already built 2) or one of my two currently unassembled gundam kits(Sazabi and Gaplant). I also have two battleships that I haven't built them yet. One is the U.S.S. Arizona and the other is an early 1900's Chinese Battleship. I also would like to try out building some anime figure model kits. I have seen a few on the internet from Sailor Moon and Gundam seed and I thought they looked really cool. the only problem is, they're sooo hard to find! I have yet to find one, but I am sure to come across one some day. i just hope that when I find one, and it happens to be a girl character, my dad's not all like, " you're gonna' build a model of a girl???" "errr.... yeah, what's wrong with a guy building a model of a girl?!" (as long as she's modestly dressed) I mean, I've built a ton of mecha and aircraft and aircraft in the past so I find nothing girly about it. so, that's enough rambling, tell me about your modeling exploits, and it would be cool if you could post some pics, especially of anime figures. Btw, has anyone here ever built an anime figure?

I have neither the skill nor patience for building models, I must admit.

I do have a Gundam Seed kit that I put together in 2 nights. It's a basic kit, but the plastic quality is actually not bad. This one is a Duel Gundam with Assault Shroud (a fancy term for disposable exterior armour).

If you are into Gundam, I seriously recommend getting Master Grade or even Perfect Grade (if price is not an issue for you). They have metal parts and are filled with ... goodness.

I have a catalogue of these models ... and they look good.

I also don't have much space left in my rooms. It is filled with books, astronomy magazines, Lego and comics.

Some day I plan to build a fully articulate robot out of Lego parts. That some day is somewhere in the distant future though...

Do you think consider Lego as a modelling hobby?

What a great thread! I actually build and paint models. In fact, I'm the only girl I know that does so, although I'm horrible about completing them. I currently have three in the works...all dragons. I'm almost finished with the most awesome one. It's a beautiful dragon and it's a scene with the dragon and a pegasus and a female warrior. I just need to do the finishing touches on the little warrior and the face/head of the dragon, then put some finishing spray on it and put it together. Seems like the Gundam models are pretty popular, huh?

I think in terms of plastic quality, the Gundam models are hard to beat. This is probably why they're popular.

I prefer Lego myself, but that's probably what most modellers don't consider as "modelling".

Well, here's another girl who likes models! I prefer building fighter aircraft and gundam models. Yeah, gundam models are typically nicely build and very articulate... let's see, I've done an F14, F18, an X-wing, tydirim shuttle, a battlestar gallactica Viper, and ten small gundam models. Sadly, I haven't had time to build any in along while. But if I ever had time for one more, I'd go big...either a mastergrade EZ8, or a perfect Wing Zero Custom...
hey, and I love legos too!!! I actually want that Titan kit that looks like a mobile suit!

Esoteric - yeh the Titan Lego kit is pretty good. I personally would stay away from the ball joints, because in my "Lego Ethic" (lol) this is "cheating". Must build joints using Technic pegs, I tell myself.

I must say that I have never really built a model in the sense that everyone else is saying, however I have built a ridiculous number of things with my large collection of Legos.

My favorite thing about Legos is that you can build almost anything. You don't have to follow a set of directions, you can make whatever your imagination can piece together. Legoooooooss....... *Wishes he had more free time*

Later this year, I want to build a gundam model like layout from 08th MS team.

I d have a 8 x 16 train layout. Me and my dad have been into model trains since I was like year old.

Awesome! as for Legos, I'm sorry, they don't count. But that's okay, 'cuz legos are awesome! I used to have a ton of legos, and I played with them all the time. They were definitely an integral part of my childhood. I used to have three containers and a whole shelf of them, but alas, they were just taking up space, so now they're all in my brother's room(he's in colledge now, so I can put junk in his room). I still have a few of my big lego sets still in my room as a testament to my childhood. Anyways, I am glad to see all these fellow builders. Yeah, the Bandaii Gundam kits are really great, but they still can't compare yo the original Arii Macross kits IMO! the only problem is, they're so dang hard to find.

There are. The beginner's grade Gundam kits are all prepainted, and they even come with ghetto stickers that you can put on them! If you like Gundam, then one of these kits would be great. I bought one, but I just painted over it anyway, because painting is one of my favorite parts.

Ah yes, the Lego Ethic... hehe, I remember reading about the the Lego Purist's Ethic a long time ago on a website. It was pretty funny, all the things they didn't consider true Legos: prefab trees, prefab castle wall parts, pink blocks... So I am familiar with Lego Ethics. LOL That's a cool site link though (brickshelf) In the mecha section, the BOF is awesome! Natsume was cool too.

I buy too many models and dont ever build them.. I've got a small compressor but have yet to decide on the model of airbrush I want to get. I'll be starting with my Astray Blue & Red frames whenever I get around to them; and if I get bold enough, I may try and kitbash to make a Gold Frame <Re> AMATU.

I built a dinosaur model! I also built a Godzilla kit. Heck, I even also have built a kit of the original Enterprise. BTW, are you a trekkie?

i used to build models all the time, mostly ww2 fighters, tanks, jeeps, jets, but i also did alot of ww1 planes too, includeing several balsa wood kits though i have to say guillows kits arnt that to scale.

I used to build a lot. Currently I'm just building Warhammer models. Come this fall I'm hoping to be working on a model dragon with faries around it... it'll be around 1:1 scale at about 18 feet tall

Yeah, layout and diarama are mostly the same thing. Most model trains diarama are called layouts and I mostly use that when I'm talking about models.

Heero yuy 95 - Check out the model shops in your local "Chinatown" area if there is one, as Hong Kong model shops used to stock a lot of these anime style models (probably still do) and sometimes ship them to Chinatown model shops that are overseas.

I know that in Sydney (Aust.), "Modellers' World" and "Astro Hobby" may have such figurine models.

Carneman - yeh ... get your Lego out, it should be fun! Do you have any space stuff? I reckon they're the best.

Mechana2015 - So you're building Warhammer (the fantasy style) models? Not Warhammer 40k by any chance? I think 40k stuff looks great, but it's really expensive.

Gee, i live in Oklahoma, so Idon't know of any "Chinatown" areas. The only nearby stores that sell models are Hobbytown USAs and their selection of models sucks. They're about 4% model kits and 96% radio control. Bleh. But I do go to at least one or two model shows each year with my dad, so I'll see if i can find one there.

Actually I'm doing 40K Tau models, though I'm starting to think the 40Kstands for the price of a decent army...

The dragon is a separate project all together (I WISH I could have an 18' tall dragon in my army) for a school club.
