The Anime Network

Postby Saint » Mon Jun 23, 2003 4:00 pm

Anyone here now much about the new Anime Network? maybe you live in the area? wish i did, hehe. heres some info it, wish my local provider would pick it up. looks like it has some good anime series... what do ya think?

***The Anime Network is the first cable channel in North America dedicated to anime. Initial availability is in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, via Comcast digital cable Video on Demand service.

Initial programming will include both fan-favorite feature films and multi-episode series. Titles include Spriggan, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Excel Saga, Martian Successor Nadesico, Gasaraki, Noir, Dai-Guard, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Orphen, Golden Boy, Sorcerer Hunters, Kimera, Ninja Resurrection, Tekken, Those Who Hunt Elves, Gunsmith Cats, Burn Up W and Samurai X: The Motion Picture.

Even dubbed into English, anime is nobody’s cartoon. Anime is distinctly Asian, and explores the boundaries of animated moving pictures in ways that American cartoons never have. The distinctive style of anime is exploding into western pop culture, and anime titles—from Sailor Moon to Cowboy Bebop—are beginning to appear on American television. The time is ripe for more…

The Anime Network was launched in 2002 by A.D. Vision, Inc., parent company of ADV Films and Newtype USA magazine.***

Yeah! I heard about it l think late last year. It didn't start up till January of this year. The more people who subscribe to the channel in Phillie, then the quicker the network will be able to spread throughout North America. I think it the best thing that has happened lately. It will also give otaku an alternative from CN.

you know whats sad andyroo. i just know we will get burned on this issue. Alabama always seems to be one of the last to get stuff. so close to Atlanta and yet so far... why can't Birmingham be a larger city.

regardless it seems once this network becomes big there will be no need to purchase anything released in the states by ADV. since the network and company are owned by the same, they are sure to show all thier series.

yea, its only a matter of time.

I didn't know that ADV and the AN were owned by the same company. That's rather cool. About 90% of my anime dvd are ADV - I just noticed that the other day. And Lord knows when Maine will get the AN. Still, it's cool that it's out there. Anime has taken such huge bounds in popularity over the past three of four years. One of the many reasons we Christians need to jump on the anime bandwagon, right?

I like the idea, but I really wish that "Colorful!" and "Golden Boy" were NOT in the lineup. Both are serious ecchi/borderline hentai and really sick. :stressed: :mutter:

I heard rumours of something like this a while back. I hadn't realized that anything had come of it.

I am in Rochester, NY right now, and I am watching the anime network right now on my Brother's VOD. He has HBO on demand, Cinemax on demand, Oxygen On demand, BBC america on demand (Monty Python, baby!), and even the Anime Network! I'm giddy... Except they don't have many good anime playing right now... Only like 2 of the shows have episode 1 playing, Everything else is in the middle of the show. I decided to watch whatever was starting from episode 1, so I watched 2 eps of Princess 9. It's much better than I was expecting, though I STILL can't get over someone with curls down to her butt in a mini-skirt playing baseball... Oh, and the fact that the main character throws a pitch that
sticks to the guy' bat for like 2 minutes spinning, before it breaks the bat and flies into her glove knocking her over
The show's pretty cute, I guess, but since everything on the channel has ADV voices, the main character is the same as aqua/the jovian girl on Nadesico, so I keep expecting her to break out saying "You evil earth woman will PAY!"

I also started "Orphen" which wa relatively interesting. I only saw 1 ep, though... It's supposed to change it's lineup every week or so, so I need to watch the other eps they have. I do wish it was a regular channel, but the on demand thing is sorta interesting. If I spend too many more days inside instead of experiencing rochester, I may have to watch the middle of some shows...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evcNPfZlrZs Watch this movie なう。 It's legal, free... And it's more than its premise. It's not saying Fast Food is good food. Just watch it.

I think it's a good sign that the Anime Network is in New York, since most things start out in New York and/or California. That means it's only a matter of time until it comes to Virginia (assuming the network does well, but if the Food Network can succeed, then I know the Anime Network will  ).

I have adelphia (digital cable), but I haven't checked to see if they offer the Anime Network. Rest assured that I will, though. :thumb:

Edit-I went to the Anime Network website, and typed in my Zip Code. Apparently it is available in my area, but not through Adelphia! :mutter: Oh cruel fate...why do you mock me?

Anyway, there is a link on the site that allows you to fax a letter to your cable provider telling them you want the Anime Network in your area. It might not be much, but then again it might, so be sure to tell your cable company that you want the Anime Network!

Here is the website if you are interested: http://www.theanimenetwork.com/index.html

Yeah. As a matter of fact, it appears that DirectTV and Dish Network are the only companies that carry the Anime Network right now; so, there is a good chance that you can get it in your area. :thumb:

I would like it, but I heard from a cousin who has it thatit shows mostly anime with bad stuff in it (nudity, language, fan service) we used to get the international channel which showed anime, but it was taken off in our area (grrrrrr) It was showing Fushigi Yuugi and I reeeeaaaaallly wanted to see it! Oh well, thats what DVDs are for . . . besides that Tech TV, Cartoon Network, HBO, Action channel are ones I know of tht have regualr scheduled anime for those of you who can't get AN . . .

Lol, maybe she wishes she could go to Japan and see anime instead of trying to get anime on TV here, UC. Hee hee, I agree. They probably have several channels dedicated to anime and all in Japan. (^_-)

...well, possibly. Do we have several channels here for just soap operas/westerns/etc? I'd be willing to bet that anime isn't that "big" in Japan; they view it like any other medium. But you make a good point.

Whenever hana has a chance, though, I'd like an answer from her.

I'm pretty sure they just have anime along with their other shows instead of channels dedicated to anime, but I'm not totally sure. I remember talking to someone about it.

We can get AN in Columbus with insight digital and I think my parents are going to order it for my b-day... maybe.
