College Majors and School

Postby DevotedFriend » Tue Jul 26, 2005 2:58 pm

So I'm going to be starting college for the first time at the end of August. (Freshman)

For all you college people out there, I'm curious. What is your major and, if you feel alright saying so, where do you go?

I'm a Communications Media Major. I want to work with newspapers and magazines, but my goal is be a part of a Christian magazine someday. I also might work with newspaper desgin too since I'm pretty good at it already. I'm going to Lock Haven University.

What about you?

Beyond my fears

This fall, I will enter as a first-year (even though I'm a college sophomore) undergrad at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, majoring in Theology. Eventually, I'd love to get a masters in missiology, but I'm ok with just a bachelor's.

And the year I spent at the University of Houston, I was a graphic design major.

I just graduated with my M.S degree in Food Science. By His Grace, GOD helped me survive my hellish years in grad school. *nods nods* GOD is good.

I will consider an Associate degree in some graphic/illustration major one day.

I graduated last year. I majored in English Single Subject Teacher Prep with and emphasis in Literture and Laungage, and History with and emphisis in Asia, particularly Japan. I was going to be a teacher but I'm not cutout for it. Plus I have no confidence in my spelling or grammer. Too bad i didn't realize this till the last semester. Right now I feel like a patetic failure even though I did get an A- on my senior paper I can't find a job. I went to Humboldt State University California.

I do though plan to eventually go to grad school and study Japanese History. I want to be a Historian. I just have to pay off HSU so I can get my diploma, and rewrite my paper. ANd find a good school.

However, I went somewhere else entirely for my MD.

I am currently pursuing my Ph.D in electrical engineering. My main focus is on the use of neural networks for auditory modelling.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Much like you, DevotedFriend, I am also a communication student. I graduated in May with a BA in communication and a BS in computer information systems. I'll be attending grad school this fall to pursue my master's and doctorate in communication, with an emphasis on journalism.

Good luck with your communication studies, DevotedFriend! :thumb:

The Straight and Narrow

I chose to walk the straight and narrow road, but one day I lost balance and fell off it. I had fallen onto some sharp rocks and injured myself. There were people passing by who would merely stare at me, and then keep walking. Thoughts of worthlessness entered into my mind, and as I chose to believe the lies, my wounds grew worse. I was so overcome with grief that I nearly gave up... but then a man walked up to me and stopped. Without saying a word, he started to wrap my wounds, he gave me some water, and then lifted me up and embraced me. He then whispered these words into my ear, "I love you my child." As he said those words I could feel all the worthlessness and despair fall away. He then held out his hands. They had huge holes in them. He then said, "Walk with me." I then took his hand and we walked together. Every now and then I would fall from the road, but no matter where I fell, he was always there to pick me up and tell me that He loved me.

...which is renowned for not having a foreign language requirement. Nevertheless, he pursued a B.A. in Linguistics. My college's rep for having the most strenuous graduation requirements is total baloney, since all [censored] colleges require the same number of units to graduate.

So you ARE pursuing a Ph. D. When I wrote Days, you didn't even have your Masters' yet, so that line about you being a Ph. D. candidate was a tad... premature.

A lot of departments don't have foreign language requirements, at least at the undergrad stage. Even then it's usually restricted to the humanities.

So you ARE pursuing a Ph. D. When I wrote Days, you didn't even have your Masters' yet, so that line about you being a Ph. D. candidate was a tad... premature.

I'm trying to remember when that was now. Near when I was finished my Master's, I was given the offer of doing the Ph.D, and then there was a lag of a few months between when I finished my M.A.Sc and officially started my doctorate.

Also, even though the Gen Ed requirements at *horses run through the room* College ostensibly work out to the same units that you would need to take at one of the others, because of how *horses run through the window* College stipulates the 'programs of concentration' requirement I was able to write all my alleged gen ed and pre-med off as minors and have something to show for it (general biology, organic chemistry and Spanish literature). Plus, all the *horses run through the room* students are trying to cram into those specific courses and we at *horses run through the window* can take anything we want ;)

I think I just gave away what school it is anyway. Or it's probably obvious now to anyone who lives nearby, at least.

I'm going to college in a year (I'm about to start my senior year in HS), but I'm considering University of Texas (Dad's been pushing UT since he went there) and University of North Texas to study art, because one of the AP teachers said that those two (and also Tech - which is TOO far away) are the best art schools in Texas. For now I have to decided which though...and also I don't know what I want to major in.. I don't really know what the options are in the art programs... so.. yeah!! I don't know what I want to do 'when I grow up' either... I need to figure that out and apply soon though O_o Heh!
